I’ve been here before, but never like this. I was craving an apple fritter, sadly none to be found, but I spied a egg tart. A friend(whose voice I have never heard) whispered softly in my ear…“Get the Egg Tarts”…okay Ann, I thought. Soft as a babies butt, semi sweet cream filled bloom of sunshine in my mouth! The noise of those I shared with! The longing for more… I started with the hot dog in a bun, smeared with horseradish mustard… stupefied! Slap myself in the face silly cause I didn’t buy more. Tomorrow is another day, as long as I don’t die tonight. «Oh, Lord, there are egg tarts in heaven, I’m sure. But, If it be thy will, let me live a bit longer…» A real prayer. Located in Chinatown on the left side of Maunakea Street(one way), facing makai(the ocean), just past Hotel Street. Aloha

The worker was grumpy and acted like he didn’t want to be there. Which one is good? I don’t know *rude tone and looked annoyed* We were speechless to see and hear the answer. It was such a turn off that we only got one item. Spam egg roll: spam and egg inside the bread. Nothing special. it’s like bread from your typical bakery. 3 stars! Bread House is almost yummylicious!

Disclaimer: I LOVEBREAD. If you come in the morning, there is the most selection available. If you don’t see what you want, try ask the employees if they have any in the back. Their fresh baked items are amazing. Their pineapple«bolo bao» buns are delicious, with a crispy«pineapple» topping. They come in plain(no filling) and coconut filling varieties, but they don’t have custard filling buns(boo). My favorite is the custard raisin loaf, located in the cabinet you first see when you enter the store. The loaves are located on the bottom shelf. The bread base is extremely soft and it just collapses under the lightest of touches. The raisins in the loaf are surrounded by pockets of smooth custard. This loaf will set you back $ 4.80 but it’s worth! This bakery also has a small area if you wanted to stay and eat your goodies you purchased and rest in between your Chinatown grocery shopping. It’s also close to Downtown for those up for a walk for breakfast. Yum!

Great find in Chinatown. I was craving a snack and came across Bread House. There is a wide selection of both savory and sweet items. I went for a hot dog bun and a cream cheese bun. I think together it came to under $ 4. I like how they were individually packaged for me in a way that made it easy to snack and walk. Both bread items were delicious. Can’t wait to take my kiddos here next time, they are gonna love it.

After several months of a sudden closure in late-June 2015, Bread House reopened this morning. Same location, same staff and same baked goodies. Regarding the variety the female staff sincerely apologized for the limited variety on hand as I arrived today. They had popular items such as the volcano, azuki bean roll, pineapple bun, hot dog bun, Hong Kong bun and many more. Could have fooled me because they had quite a selection to choose from. However, when I checked out the cake display they only had strawberry shortcake and it was very tempting. No macaroons, tiramisu or cheesecake yet. Perhaps just a matter of time before we see those? I ended up with hot dog rolls as a snack later for my favorite niece and nephew(inside joke — — I only have one of each so they both win by default). Place is still very clean and bright. I found the bakery still welcoming for take-out as well as dining in on the several tables. Should be very soon before the Bread House is fully stocked of their delicious baked buns, rolls and cakes at reasonable prices. So if you’re in Chinatown and want tasty baked goods stop by and you won’t be disappointed.

I love food in Chinatown and Mink loves anything from a bakery, especially if it’s from Bread House. They are conveniently located next to the Chinatown police station so this is must go to spot for us before or after a meal. Talk about the perfect place for us! It’s a clean bakery with delicious pastries and cake. I don’t eat much pastries but Mink did let me try some of their custard items and they were good! It’s great coming here because they are so convenient for me if I’m at the office or eating in Chinatown. They are so close to Downtown that I can walk over to pick up a surprise treat for Mink during my day. Most of the time I drive because it’s hot and I’m lazy but I could walk if I wanted to. It’s nice that they are always consistent with customers throughout the day and they bring out fresh pastries daily. There are several tables and chairs to enjoy your snack/dessert. It’s well lit inside with natural light coming in from the entrance and when you’re inside, you don’t feel like you’re in Chinatown. It’s a great spot to chat with friends or to enjoy a treat. I’ve had coffee here several times and I really like the ambiance. The staff and owner are very nice. Not only do they speak Chinese, they speak English as well! Heads up though, they do not have wifi and it’s cash only here.

This is your place to go if you have a huge sweet tooth like me! This place is fantastic! All their bread items are amazing, the bread literally melts in your mouth!!! I have never used to many exclamation marks to express my self!!! I tried the mini cream cheese filled bread and the Tiramisu cake. The bread-Oh so fluffy and soft with the perfect amount of cream cheese. I couldn’t believe I underestimated the power if this bread and bought just one mini bread! I have been happy and happier every time I visited this place. I highly recommend this place to all the future diabetics!

As soon as we walked into Bread House my son exclaimed«Wow! It’s so clean!». It definitely was a departure from most of Chinatown with insect-less floors, modern-esque shiny furnitue, and bright lights. Whenever we are in Chinatown, the husband is on a quest to secure a coconut cream bun. Coconut cream buns are not my favorite as I don’t care for buttercream and would much rather have my bread filled with eggy custards. Until Bread House. My children devoured their melon pan and I was working my way through a light and delicious custard bun when I was overcome with the urge to bite into my husband’s coconut cream bun. It was delicious. It was coconut cream heaven. The bread was light as clouds, fluffy as the breasts of angels, the light coconut dusting was perfection and the cream was some sort of magical, buttery, sugary crack cocaine. I took another bite. Then another bite. Then yanked the damned thing out of my husband’s hands and shoved it down my gullet while mumbling«What? You can go get another one». Then I wanted another one. I want another one right now. Scratch that, I want a whole box of them. Right now. Good Lord someone bring me a bun.

They have the milk tea that suit my friend and I’s taste. We used to trek our way to Maunakea from Fort St Mall just to get their milk tea. I don’t remember what we told the guy who usually prepped our drinks. I think it was more milk-less tea(like 60 – 50), no sugar, and lite ice. And he was more than happy to make it. But don’t forget the desserts and breads they have. Good for snacking! Other pictures of milk tea:

After seeing pictures and reading reviews about their japanese cheesecake, I just had to come here. Located on Maunakea street in chinatown, there is only street parking so my darling bf drove me down and dropped me off so I could run in and see what the deal was. I got there around 11 am and they had about 5 pieces of cheesecake left. Now prior reviews said there were 2 types of cheesecake«regular» and«fluffy». I asked the owner(he said he had a one man shop, he does it all) for the fluffy cheesecake and looked puzzled. He said he only had one kind of cheesecake but it’s «cake style». I got 3 pieces for $ 3 each. I also got 2 cream cheese mini buns($.70) and 2 hot dog buns($ 1.20). They were out of the pineapple buns, the pork floss bun, the hot dog and cheese buns and other donuts as well. I’m not sure if he restocks during the day. Let me say the cheesecake was delectable. It tasted like super soft melt in your mouth butter poundcake. I ate the whole slice. I also told my boyfriend that he wouldn’t like his piece so I ate his too. The cream cheese mini bun was good. Hot dog bun was run of the mill. Cash only The owner was very pleasant. I’m on to Elvin’s bakery next to try their japanese cheesecake.

Bread House, what a cute name! This bakery is located near police station in Chinatown. Bread House is a Chinese bakery and they’re pretty similar to Elvin’s bakery. I’m not sure who’s copying who. I like their volcano bun which looks like half deflated ball with nothing inside. It just has light coating of sweetness on the top. My family also like their pineapple buns. There’s no free parking folks. This is in Chinatown. If you visit on a Sunday, you’ll see 2 younger gentlemen working behind the counter who are pleasant.

I’ve come here fairly often now that I work downtown, and thought it was unfair to keep it as 4 stars when I’m obviously a fan of the place. I have my favorites here, and I keep coming back for them. The bread base seems to be the same for all the goodies, but it’s the fillings that make them unique. Like all Asian pastries, it isn’t too sweet. The bread base is the softest bread I’ve ever had(no exaggeration), but the downside to that is that if you don’t eat it right away, the bread deflates. So… eat your goodies ASAP! — Cocktail buns: Rolls filled with coconut. I can’t find these in the Japanese bakeries, so I’m so glad that Bread House makes them. — Coconut«butterflies»: Haha, these aren’t the official names, but I have no idea what to call them, and that’s what I refer to them as when I ask the owners for them. They’re like a lighter version of cocktail buns, because the coconut is spread evenly throughout the«wings» instead of a giant lump in the center of a roll. I like these even more than the cocktail buns. — Red bean sticks: I’m not the biggest fan of red bean. But the way that the bread is made here, spreads the red bean paste throughout the entire piece of bread, and it actually makes it pretty yummy. I ate three in a day. — Green tea swiss rolls with red bean cream: For the days you want something sweeter. It’s still not as sweet as European or American style pastries, but it’s a cake after all, so it’s still something to satisfy your sweet tooth. The red bean whipped cream is very light. Forget the swiss roll… I want a giant cake of this. The prices here are probably the best I’ve seen so far in the Asian bakeries I’ve visited. I’m spoiled by the super cheap prices of bread in NYC Chinese bakeries, and the Bread House comes close. I almost want to cry on the days I go to St. Germain’s and spend nearly $ 30 on a box of stale goodies. Here, I spend half of that for better quality, fresher goods. I show up when the place opens, and the young guy who owns the place is always so apologetic about opening even a minute late.(Dear young guy — don’t be sorry, the bread makes me happy lol). He’s very nice and welcoming. After a few visits, he knew I was on the hunt for the coconut butterfly breads, and was nice enough to tell me that they would be coming out of the oven in a few minutes. Totally made my day.

I used to park at Hale Pauahi in Chinatown and walk to work downtown. One day, I decided to go down Maunakea and noticed a new and *gasp* clean storefront. Walked by and noticed a new bakery was in town. Skeptical at first, I checked my Unilocal app and saw about 4 reviews at the time, all saying this place was good, so I went in. Likes: Great price for the quality. They have an assortment of baked goods, but they’re things you’d typically see in a mall or nice strip mall, rather than in Chinatown. However, instead of paying like $ 2 – 3 for a pastry and $ 4 – 5 for a slice of cake, the pastries here are under $ 2, sometimes even $ 1, and the cakes are $ 3 a slice. They also taste good too! Dislikes: Cash only. Also, I’m used to more dense cheesecake(like Cheesecake Factory…), and theirs is too light. But some of my coworkers liked it. Favorites: I haven’t had a good croissant since I moved out of Europe. However, their croissants here are pretty good for Hawaii! Not 100% like I remember, but it’s good enough I guess. They also have mini ones for 50 cents. If you need to bring a bunch of good pastries in to work or at a party and not looking to spend as much, come over here. You might want to bring a nice container though because they give you the pastries in little baggies, and the cakes come in styrofoam containers. Can’t complain when it’s this cheap though.

11.6.13. I had read about this place some time ago on Unilocal…& one day, my mom needed to pick up a lei. So, as most people know, stopping in Chinatown to pick up anything is difficult due to the lack of street parking/waiting areas. Luckily, there was a spot open on Maunakea! Still, I waited in the car while my mom went to pick out the lei… I was waiting, kind of looking around at what was near by… It took me a while to realize that, hey! This was the place I had read about! I immediately abandoned my post in the car & decided to check it out. Bread House is a quaint bakery with a definite European vibe. Clean displays showcase the various pasteries available that day… ranging from actual food(e.g., pizza rolls, ham & cheese, etc.) to sweet treats(e.g., bear claws, coconut-filled donuts, etc.). I went for the latter, settling for a custard bear claw & a coconut-filled donut. Both items were pretty large in my opinion, as it goes for pasteries. Prices seemed to be in the ballpark of Zippy’s pasteries… but these seemed much more gourmet. I thoroughly enjoyed my bear claw & my coworker enjoyed the coconut confection. If you’re into custard that has that distinct egg-y flavor, this place is for you! Hopefully I can come back here again to try some other things… it is quite a walk from central downtown though :(But overall, I am really happy that I stumbled upon this place! I’ve only been in Bread House once, but I’ve tried a good portion of the breads sold here. When they first opened, I mentioned this bakery to my dad and since then he’s been buying boxes at a time. The breads here are«Asian» style, meaning most is white and tender in texture. My favorite would have to be the spam and egg. Normally I don’t care for spam, but I guess when you eat it in conjunction with bread it’s somehow delicious! I also enjoyed the raisin twist! I haven’t tried all their cakes, but the new black forest one was absolutely lovely! For $ 3, you get a generous slice of soft, chocolatey cake with shaved choco bits on top. I liked that it wasn’t too sweet, considering how much chocolate was in it. Highly recommend!

I learned about this place from seeing Lori I’s check in. I’m always down for trying new bakeries, especially Asian ones. Came here at around 1:30 on a weekday and there was not much selection on the pastry side. I did buy a mini volcano($ 1.20) for my friend Lori M. and she liked it very much. I picked up a slice of strawberry shortcake($ 3) and LOVED it. It was moist, light, and had a decent amount of strawberry pieces in the filling. The next time I need to pick up a cake for a party, maybe I’ll pick up an entire cake for $ 30. Will definitely be back to try more things. I hope they have a better selection the next time around.
