My husband and I have been here multiple times and every time is amazing! Our food is always perfect, the drinks are delicious, and the staff is all so friendly! This time our chef was Jared and server was kyle. They were both wonderful! We will be back!

Mediocre. That pretty much says it all. I am not a huge salt fan and everything was considerably under seasoned. Our chef was bland as well. The vegetables consisted of onion, bell pepper, and mushrooms which were considerable under cooked. The beans sprouts served at the end of the meal were pretty raw as well. We ordered the friend rice and again very bland. Really surprised at the 5 star rating. It was also a downer that there was no Siracha, chili paste, or anything along those lines. We were offered tobacco. Way better places to eat in Waikiki. We had the scallops entrée with fried rice and the 10oz ribeye with friends rice. 3 stars for service and food. This is a skip

Such a fun night out! Not only is the food exceptional, the chefs put on a great show at your shared table. It’s all smiles here — from guests and staff alike. We shared a table with some fellow tourists as well as Honolulu locals. This is a great place with something for everyone.

Wow. I went here today for a graduation party and it was amazing. The atmosphere is so nice and the seating around the grill is great! He started to prepare the vegetables(mushrooms, peppers, and onions) and he did it so expertly and it looked really cool. They also tasted delicious. He began to put shrimp on the grill however, I have a shellfish allergy. I let him know and the manager came over and offered to fully clean the grill and utensils. I knew it would take long and didn’t want to inconvenience the other people on my table, so I said I was okay. They prepared steak and chicken in the back for me separately. The manager told the man to make sure no shrimp or anything cooked after it touched my plate. His concern for my allergy and want to cater to it is the reason I’m giving them 5 stars. Not to mention the amazing taste of the food and fast service! The Piña colada and strawberry Daiquiri are very good as well as their hot green tea and complementary green tea ice cream. Thanks, Tanaka of Tokyo East!

I love a good hibachi experience. The exceptional Unilocal reviews let me to Tanaka of Tokyo East, and my goodness, the experience did not disappoint! This is my new favorite hibachi restaurant and my only disappointment is they do not have one in Los Angeles. Our chef Lester was on fire. I took my mom here for a belated mother’s day celebration. I was nervous when we were sat at the grill alone. I worried that our chef would be less lively and the show would be less exciting for just two people. To my delight, it was the exact opposite. Chef Lester had a great sense of humor, impeccable dexterity and so much aloha spirit! It was such a fun and intimate experience! We both ordered the lobster and upgraded from white rice to fried rice. All hibachi orders come with miso soup, a salad, grilled vegetables and ice cream. Everything was DELICIOUS. I have had so many other experiences at other hibachi restaurants(rhymes with Beni-ha-ha’s) where the food is tasteless or overcooked. Chef Lester seasoned everything to perfection and did not skimp on the butter. My mom, who has the pickiest palate, devoured her entire meal and gave a nod of satisfaction with each bite. Service was great. Even on a busy Friday night it was easy to get the attention of a waiter for drink refills. I can’t wait to come back next time I’m in Waikiki. Tip: Wear washable clothing and don’t make any grand plans after without a shower, for you WILL smell like fried rice when you leave.

Yet another 5 star experience for this restaurant. It’s never a fail. Celebrated my brother KiMOs birthday. Got a group of 24 people. We took up 3 tables. Our chef was Brandon. Cooked everything very delicious. Our waiter was Austin. Very good. Kept our drinks filled. Also kept my nephew entertained as he kept talking story to him. The other tables sounded like they had a blast too with Pono and Joe cooking and Tyler. Thanks JR and Jamie for your hospitality. Can’t wait to come again.

Tanaka of Tokyo East is located in the former Round Table Pizza at the OHANA Waikiki East Hotel on Kaiulani Avenue. Parking is located inside the hotel’s lot and they validate your ticket. For my friend’s birthday, the plan was to breakout of Room 13 at Breakout Waikiki from 5−6pm and then have dinner at Tanaka’s afterwards since both venues were nearby(and we needed a place to park too lol). I called to make reservations 2 weeks prior for our party of 6, but the earliest time they had available was 7pm, so we just took it anyways. Everything from the exterior to the interior of the restaurant was beautiful and clean. Although our reservation wasn’t until 7pm, we went in 30mins earlier to just wait and kill time, but luckily, they were able to take us in earlier! The staff up front were super friendly and very welcoming. After the host escorted us to our seats, we all got our menus and started looking over what to order. Since we were here for my friend’s birthday, they definitely treated us like VIPs. Even the manager came up to us to thank us for coming to their restaurant to celebrate a special occasion. Talk about excellent customer service! I ordered the Seafood Combo(Calamari, Scallops & Lobster Tail) while my boyfriend got the Super Ribeye. And we both got it with garlic fried rice. Everything was delicious! The ribeye wasn’t too fatty, but super flavorful and cooked just right. For my seafood combo, I was actually really surprised I got an entire lobster tail! I was expecting to get very little lobster as that’s the most expensive part of my meal. The chef added lots of butter, so you know it was super yummy haha. At the end of our meals, we got a choice of dessert. I usually never make it to dessert because I’m always full after my entrée, so I just got the vanilla ice cream. I just wanted something light but cold and refreshing. Everything from the ambiance, to the customer service, to the food was excellent! I would highly recommend this place to anyone that enjoys being entertained while their chef cooks in front of you. This Japanese steakhouse probably trumps the other Japanese steakhouse restaurants on the island!

Kimo deserves 10 stars. He was funny and engaging. Also super good with the hibachi tricks. The food was good! More importantly than any of that, he gave us some SUPER tips on where to hike, camp, etc. Kimo was by far the most welcoming and willing to share their love/knowledge of Hawaii out of anyone we met. Thank you Kimo and thank you tanaka. Our trip was extra awesome because of you!

I got the sirloin steak & my boyfriend had the ribeye. ITWASSOGOOD! VERYFLAVORFUL! Bronson did cool tricks, too. He really gets to interact with us & it felt very welcoming & comforting. It’s a hibachi place. Generic and like all others. There is nothing that makes this place more special than any other hibachi restaurant so if you are craving for a show and dinner, you will not be disappointed here. The food is the usual, always a bit salty and buttery than needed but that’s the standard fare. We met with another couple that were in Hawaii for vacation and we got a bunch of their combos. Ribeye, Seafood combo, Scallops and chicken. All were cooked well and the chef was a fun person.

First out. Its well worth the price. Its reasonably priced for the quality, show, and portions you get. You should also make reservations ahead of time as a full table, I think is more fun. Our chef was Kimo. Its been a long time since I’ve done this type of Japanese hibache. We dont usually do it, but decided to try something different since we were in a place were Japanese food is going to be great. I got the the super t bone steak and she got the super steak and terriyaki chicken. My steak was better, but it is because its a fattier meat so I of course liked mine better. The terriayki chicken was very good. I was woried it was going to be dry, but it was cooked well and the sauces was good. I think the fried rice is definately worth it. NOt much more at under 4 dollars. They give you free dessert at the end. And someone will be going around taking pictures of your group. Overall, good service, good food, and reasonble price for what you’re getting.

On our weekend getaway to Waikiki, our family of four wanted to chow down on some Teppanyaki Cuisine before we left the next day. Instead of walking to Benihana’s in the Hilton Hawaiian Village about 25 minutes away from our hotel, the Sheraton Waikiki, we decided to eat at a Japanese restaurant definitely different from something you can get back here in Los Angeles– and it was only a 15 minute walk from our hotel! The décor at this restaurant is beautiful, and it wasn’t all too crowded. We made reservations about an hour and 15 minutes beforehand and it was done, no problem. I even called back to lengthen the reservation until later because we wouldn’t be ready on time, and they had absolutely no complications doing that for us. The restaurant is located right next to the Sheraton Princess– just a little tip. The food, needless to say, was fantastic. The only problem I had was that Fried Rice was charged as an extra side. Although it was great tasting and the quality was great, most Teppanyaki restaurants here in LA, such as Sakura in La Cañada Flintridge, or Tokyo Wako in Pasadena, give you the choice of complimentary Fried Rice. BUT we’re not stingy and love our Fried Rice so the approximate $ 3.00 surcharge for each was NOT a big deal for us. By the way, pay the extra $ 3.00 for the Super Filet, which is 3oz more than the regular Filet Mignon– SO worth it. Salad and soup come with entrees, AND dessert(yes, you get a choice of ice cream– decent sized and flavors include: Vanilla, Chocolate, Green Tea, Sorbet, AND Kona Coffee, YESKONACOFFEEFLAVOREDICECREAMFOLKS– AMAZING!!) That’s a first I’ve seen at Teppanyaki. Fried Rice isn’t included but Ice Cream is. Not complaining though! Tasty food, nice dark and intimate atmosphere, decent sized restaurant, and our chef was hilarious, and lemme just say. THESEGUYSPUTONSUCH A BETTERSHOWTHANTHECHEFSINLOSANGELES. WOW. I’ve been going to Teppanyaki for years, but I saw tricks done here with spatulas and such that I have never seen before. Insane, dangerous, and thoroughly entertaining. Incredible. If you’re in Waikiki, check out this gem. You will not be disappointed.

One of the best Japanese restaurants in Honolulu. Similar to Benihana on the Mainland, Tanaka serves fresh food prepared in front of you. The setting itself looks warm and intimate. The architecture boasts of dark wood and Japanese décor. In one showcase, you see an original samurai sword. After reviewing the menu, the Seafood Delight seems like a good choice. The chef appears to enjoy entertaining the patrons. He speaks to the Japanese patrons in their native tongue. He appears to appreciate and give thanks to the audience. Tanaka gives a better portion than Benihana. The entrée comes with green tea, pickled vegetables, and sautéed mung beans. Best to make a reservation earlier in the day for the evening. This remains a very popular place for locals and visitors alike. Before heading in, Tanaka offers an electronic menu on the outside so you can choose your meal quicker. It has a separate alcoholic menu. While in Honolulu, come and experience fine Japanese dining. The servers do an amazing job of making sure you feel comfortable. Tanaka will not disappoint. It equals to perfection.

Since many times I’m traveling solo, Teppayaki is a nice dinner stop. Takaka of Tokyo East(there is one in Central and East Waikiki) is a very elegant store. JR the GM will greet you like and old friend and remembered my name after only one visit. Nick, a world class swordsman, proved his expertise with the shrimp tail in the hat and hula tricks. I had the calamari steak appetizer, which just melted in my mouth(no tentacles). Lobster and sirloin steak were grilled up just right. Mango sherbet was a nice finish.

We decided to go to Tanaka of Tokyo last minute so it was without a reservation. Since the East location had the shortest wait we decided to go there. FOOD: The food is amazing, never been disappointed with the quality of the food. It’s always full of flavor and their fried rice is a WINNER(especially if you like garlic). THESERVICE: I have always gone to the Central location where the service is nothing short of awesome. However, since we had gone to the East location I was a bit disappointed. Our chef was nice, but I believe he was able to communicate better with non-english speaking guests that would dine at the restaurant. He didnt really talk much, he kinda just cooked our food and got out. We were a party of 4 and we were seated with another local family from the North Shore. And also the waitress forgot to fill waters frequently. PRICE: The price of the food in my opinion is well worth what you’re getting. You’re not paying for the view and poor food quality like you are with other restaurants in Waikiki. OVERALL: I would have rather waited longer at the Central location. It has never let me down, the Chefs are very well experienced and always do fun stuff and make the table laugh. And the service is much better. I dont think I would recommend going to the east location. **just a tip, I heard from the Chef at the central location that the west location(ala moana) has new chefs that are still in training until they increase their skills and transfer to the other locations. Never been but my boyfriend says its good during lunch

Good food, nothing like we have in California. If your from California and want«spicy sauce» or «spicy teriyaki sauce» they don’t have it. The closest they have is «Tampico». The show is the same as every show at every Teppan-Yaki restaurant. The food is sort of bland. One of my party ordered the«super fillet» and it was probably the most flavorless fillet I have ever tasted. On a positive note, the service was great.

Wonderful food and setting. We went for a birthday celebration. Five of us around a hot plate. Chef(Chief Chef?) Lester amazed us with his skill with a(very sharp) knife. He made paceman come to life, a train – with smoke coming out of the smokestack, made of onion rings! We had the full meals which was a lot of excellent food at a reasonable price. Fortunately we had a young growing man with us who batted clean-up! Thanks to Lee our waiter, who suggested that I order the steak meal with a shrimp appetizer when I wanted shrimp & steak(which is not on the menu), a most excellent choice. J R Bautista was the gracious manager who greets us and made sure we had everything we wanted. The mango sorbet finished it off perfectly ! I would go there again… and again… and again…

There are three tanaka of Tokyo restaurants in Honolulu. It is our local(and much better IMHO) version of Benihana or Kobe. This is the new«East» location, the central location is only a few blocks away and the west location is in ala moana center… They’re all within a mile or so of each other, yet there are always so many customers! Luckily, I’ve always made reservations, but there is usually one or two empty tables. The tables are arranged in 8 – 10 seats, so if you come in a small party, you’ll probably be seated with strangers/new friends haha. I visited the new Tanaka of Tokyo East on their opening night. Because I live only about a block away, I didn’t have to park and I knew where I was going. I frequented the old location in King’s Village, and in comparison, the new location is so beautiful/awesome/brand-spankin’ newly renovated. The restrooms are an experience in and of itself and they had state of the art teppanyaki grills installed. The chefs were still getting used to their new grills, but the food was still amazing. I love the teriyaki sirloin($ 1 extra for teriyaki sauce) and the fact that all the meals come with bean sprouts, sautéed bell pepper/onion, a few pieces of shrimp, miso soup, rice, salad, pickled veggies and ice cream. I’ve thought about ordering the shrimp as an entrée because it is that good, but I’ve always stuck to my teriyaki sirloin order… for the 20 years I’ve been dining at tanaka of Tokyo. I also love the green tea ice cream. Just do it, and thank me later. The staff is always very welcoming and pleasant. Someone is always nearby to top off your water or ask if you need more rice. The fact that everyone is always smiling, customers and workers alike, makes tanaka of Tokyo one of my favorite places to go for special occasions.

Can I just say that when you roll in with VIP, you certainly get treated with VIP. My aunty was the VIP and asked my sister(she’s never been to this type of place) and myself to join her. We were seated promptly even though we were 30 min early. The Manager(I feel horrible for not remembering his name) came over to us and gave us a gift of reusable metal chopsticks in a Tanaka of Tokyo case. There are 8 seats around one grille, we were a group of 3, one empty seat then a group of 5 visiting the islands. Our chef was Zryno, he was funny, quick, and made tasty food, even when a certain gentlemen failed to show and sense of humor at all. You get like 8 courses really: Salad — little green but just enough to freshen your pallete Shrimp Appetizer — made in front of you and watch out for their dance moves! Teppanyaki Vegetables — onions and bell peppers, also cooked in front of you. Some pickled veggies around the same time you get fried rice(if you get that option and its worth it!) Your main meal — Divine! Miso Soup Green Tea Lastly, Dessert — Ice Cream of your choosing. I ordered the Lobster and Sirloin(medium rare-made perfectly to my request), my sister had the salmon and my aunty had the ribeye. I loved both my Lobster and Sirloin but I would have to say that next time I plan on ordering the salmon, it was perfectly seasoned and cooked. Large enough slab to take home and have lunch the next day as well. My sister and I shared with each other so we could get the best of everything! She ordered the coffee ice cream and I ordered the vanilla and we split each into each others bowls, which I have to say was the perfect mixture! If its just me, I will be ordering the Coffee one myself next time! The Manager also added us to the VIP list next time! Thank you Tanka of Tokyo East! It was a wonderfully fun and mouthwatering experience! We will be back!

We’ve been going to many teppanyaki restaurants around the country and this by far was the best food and experience. The chef actually not only entertained us but treated everyone with respect, made sure we had everything we wanted and if not, found a runner to get it… like an extra bowl rice. We had a party of 6 and I had a $ 200 gift certificate I bought at an events silent auction. I’m pretty sure our tab with tip and tax would come out over $ 200 but they insisted that everything was taken care of, nothing more was necessary. What a great Christmas dinner! Only negatives was we came out smelling like food but that happens at all of these places no matter how good the ventilation is. Parking is great and fully validated(self parking), but tricky to find. Entrance is facing Kuhio avenue next to coin laundry. Will try to make this place a Christmas tradition for dinner!

The new Tanaka of Tokyo East in Waikiki was fantastic! Dined in with a party of 2 for an early dinner, and we had a private table with chef Bronson cooking for us. This is the only restaurant that I know who greet and acknowledge their customers with a friendly smile. That is very important to me as I have walked away many times from a restaurant who didn’t acknowledge me at all in the first 10 minutes. I ordered a wagyu and my friend ordered the shogun course plus salmon. We both crave for the fried rice, which is only a $ 3.75 upgrade from regular rice. Score! This is THE place to splurge on food, and treat yourself to a nice dinner that you deserve. The food quality is amazing as always. We ended the meal with ice cream to cleanse our palette, which comes with the meal so be sure to leave some room for it! The choices of mango sorbet, vanilla, chocolate, kona coffee, and green tea are all very good. The cocktail drinks from the bar is also perfection. Try the Samurai Margarita! Thanks Lee, the bartender! Our waiter, Justin, was very good on taking care of us. He’s a really funny guy in his own way. Overall, Tanaka of Tokyo really knows how to treat their guests well. Is there a button for 6 stars?

This was my first time at this location but I have eaten at the central location 4 times. I have always enjoyed the food and show at Tanaka’s. Tonight the wife and I both had the great steak and chicken. Their meals come with steamed rice but we upgraded to the friend garlic rice. While waiting for our meal I had a Mango Mai Tai which was very delicious. The meal also came with salad, picked veggies, grilled veggies, shrimp appetizer, miso soup, green tea and ice cream. First up was he salad which came with a ginger dressing. It was small but very tasty. The miso soup was very good but I didn’t eat it all as I knew to same space for the main course. The picked veggies were good but the wife liked them so much she stole mine. The steak and chicken were both cooked as requested and were tender and very flavorful. They give you sauces but the meat didn’t really need it. I did try them and they both were very good. They have ginger and a mustard style sauce. The ginger was my favorite as it went well with the shrimp and both meats. The mustard is also very good with the beef. The shrimp came up first and they were fresh and very tasty. I waited to have all the meat and grilled veggies so that I could enjoy them all together. The grilled veggies went so good with the meats. The Garlic rice is so tasty and to me is a must try with your meal. The show that comes with the cooking of your meal is the best part of coming to the Japanese Teppan places. Tanka’s does not disappoint as their Chef’s are welled trained and have their own show styles. Each one of them adds their own flavor to their cooking show. We had a really good Chef with 4 years at Tanaka’s and he did a masterful job. It was a fun show and everyone at our table had a great time. The staff is really great as they are super friendly and make you feel as if you are eating at their home. From the check in to the wait staff you are King for the day. They really put Aloha into their work and it truly shows. We laughed with and had such a great night with all the staff. The waitress even gave us the Military discount since we didn’t have the coupon that everyone else at our table had. Great time as always and looking forward to my next dinner and Show at Tanaka’s of Tokyo!

The food here is good but what sets it apart is the exceptional service. We walked with a party of 8 and were seated right away, with all the wait staff said«Yōkoso» as we passed, which means welcome(I hope). The staff anticipated our needs and accommodated us before we even asked or realized that we wanted that. For example, we had a toddler with us, and the waitstaff, without being asked, brought over rice, tofu and a small cup of water so she could eat and not have to wait for the adults’ food to cook. Then the chef, again without being asked, cut a portion of all the meats and veggies into tiny toddler-friendly bite size pieces so she could sample some of the hibachi as well. Needless to say, we never had to ask for our drinks to be filled either. Our every need was taken care of. Every time I have been back to a restaurant, it has been because of the food. This is the first restaurant that I would return for the service. I have dine at 5+ star restaurants and while the service have been wonderful, this is first time I’ve been absolutely blown away. The service is truly phenomenal.

Fun place, great bartender. Sat at the bar because I didn’t want dinner and somehow being a singleton at the community tables would seem awkward. As you can imagine the bar is primarily a service bar, I was the only person seated at the bar. Rachael the bartender seemed to enjoy my company and was able to be conversant while also getting her work done. We enjoyed chatting and we even commented how she was contemplating asking me about my job. As I asked her the same question. I ate seared fish which was good. I suggested that Rachael toss it to me like the expo chefs do, but she declined. Then I suggested that I’d like stir-fry veggies, which is not on the menu… she made it happen. Only awkwardness was when I went to pay the $ 17 bill With two 20s the cashier asked me if I wanted change, so I told him I wanted to give Rachael $ 10, so he broke the second 20. It was odd that He could not figure that out, but hey it is what it is.

Visited the new location for Tanaka of Tokyo East and it’s a really nice upgrade from King’s Village! The new location is part of the Ohana Waikiki East hotel – parking entrance is off of Kuhio Ave. and there’s lots of stalls so it’s very easy to find parking. Restaurant is on the street level so it’s very visible when driving by too. They validate parking, which is always a plus in Waikiki! We visited during Restaurant Week, so we took advantage of their Wagyu & Lobster combination – it was excellent! Other must haves at Tanaka of Tokyo is their Daimyo & fried rice. On this visit, we also had two younger children with us, and I thought that the Tanaka of Tokyo staff did so well with them! It’s nice how the kids have their own menus(choice of steak, chicken or shrimp) and a whole beverage menu for them too! Always a great experience here at Tanaka of Tokyo! Thank you to our chef, Bronson, for making it extra fun & special! TIP: Make sure you follow them on Facebook/Instagram for their monthly specials. =)

We had a great bachelorette/bridal party dinner thanks to the above and beyond service by the staff and management of Tanaka of Tokyo East in their new location on the Ohana East Hotel! At the outset there great customer service and professionalism shined when we called to make our reservation. They were courteous and very accommodating, offering us a private dining experience so we wouldn’t have to share our seating with another group as they normally would do since we only had 6 people and the grill you sit at can hold up to 10. When we arrived we were greeted very warmly by the manager on duty NIO who was an absolute delight to be around and cheerily showed our troop to the table. Our chef JOE who has been there for over 10 years wowed and amazed us with the level of skill he had cooking our food with style. We cheered him on all night and were actually thanked by the management after our meal for livening up the place! Our server was also on point and was never missing when we needed something. I was also impressed with how flexible the staff was to meet our needs as one in our party couldn’t make it until almost an hour after our reservation. However we informed them of the situation and our server as well as our wonderful chef JOE accommodated our request! As if all that wasn’t enough since we were celebrating, the restaurant gave us the professional photos taken at the beginning of our meal complimentary! More than 60 $ in retail value ASWELLAS gifting our guest of honor with a cute gift of collapsible metal chopsticks! And wait theres more the whole wait staff joined the manager NIO in singing a cute song to the bachelorette! Over all an amazing experience from everyone of the staff that night! Id highly recommend coming here for out of the 3 Tanaka of Tokyo’s on the island!

We absolutely LOVED the new location at the Ohana East hotel! I don’t even know where to begin! From the décor, amount of space inside, amazingly awesome chef Jonah, super short walking distance from parking garage, FREE parking with validation from Tanaka, and just overall AMAZING staff! It is super hard to not feel at home at any of the locations. But so far, the East location is our favorite! As far as drinks go, the Shaka flow was refreshing and ono! Food is always on point! First time of trying the salmon, and it was SUPER ono! Definitely recommend it, if you haven’t tried it yet! And of course you can’t be disappointed when ordering the filet or sirloin! Basically ANYTHING you order, you will not be disappointed! Any occasion whether you are celebrating an anniversary, birthday or just a good olé date night, check out this new location!

Recently went to the new location of Tanaka Of Tokyo East with a few of my friends. They’re now located at Ohana East. Very nice décor, with their tiki torches & colorful surroundings. A few interesting paintings & pictures on the wall. We were welcomed & greeted wonderfully by their staff, very upbeat & full of energy. They still enforce their very strict rule of no hats policy but it’s well compensated by their food, well mannered staff, & atmosphere. The staff were all wearing different, traditional uniforms; definitely well made. I ordered the Super Steak & Chicken which was priced around $ 30. Chef Joe came out & greeted us confidently. He started cracking a few jokes & they were pretty corny but humorous. He asked how i wanted my steak & cooked it medium well to perfection. The chefs here are very talented; they definitely work really hard to perfect their art of cooking & entertainment. They do all kinds of neat tricks with a knife & spatula. The server was very tentative & I never had to ask for a refill of water. All in all, it was a fantastic dinner. Would definitely, highly recommend this place for everybody. Great place for a date, family friendly, & a great place to have a good time while eating lunch or dinner. Big 2 thumbs up &5 stars all around.
