Gumbo Jeaux’s was a real treat. Best cajun meal I’ve had in a long time! I ordered the catfish opelusas and a friend ordered the chicken and waffles, with a side of fries. The catfish opelusas get top marks although when I came back for the second time, it was less tasty. The roux didn’t have as much depth. Still one of the best things on the menu. The chicken was also juicy and crispy. However the waffle was not crisp at the edges and the fries were like McDonald’s(i.e. nothing to write home about). It is a reasonable priced, friendly atmosphere. There are a ton of hot sauces to choose from too.

This place is not too big, so I am sure it fills up during peak times. I felt like I got plenty of food for the price & had a nice amount for leftovers later that night. My food was a little bit more spicier than I would have liked, but I will try some other items in the future to see if this is consistent.

I appreciate the friendly staff and BYOB policy here! Everyone was very nice, and I was excited to try the food. I must have come on an off day, because my order of gumbo was flavorless and tasted like oil. Gumbo is one of my favorite Cajun foods, so I was disappointed. My friends ordered the blackened catfish though, which tasted great! Maybe I’ll have to give this place a second try, because everyone else seems to rave about the food.

Food was mediocre, slightly bland taste, I ordered the fried catfish and shrimp and subbed my side for gumbo. The gumbo was meaty and OK(I’ve had better), the fish and shrimp was bland. I did feel like the lady at the front(older lady) was a bit aggressive and condescending, she didn’t greet me and my friend when we walked in, but greeted other people after us. I felt like she was rushing me while placing my order, and was very unpleasant when we walked in. I will not return to this establishment, Houston has an abundance of restaurants to choose from.

I grabbed a to go lunch order of crawfish bisque and an order of gumbo. The restaurant is a simple design on the inside with an friendly staff running it. I was in and out quickly. The crawfish bisque is a thick cream based soup heavy on the peppery taste. I really liked it, but it may be too peppery for some. The gumbo had a good roux with good flavor. The prices seemed reasonable and there was a really good variety. I will go back. The only reason I am not giving it 4 stars is because I did take out and need eat there for the full experience. I will update my review once I do.

Who: bf & I Where/when: Heights, last minute dinner What: gumbo, crawfish étouffée soup, dirty rice Why: So cheap and good! Both of our orders were around $ 5 – 6, and they were plenty for dinner. The crawfish étouffée soup is exactly as advertised, it’s a soup. Though I like my étouffée more as a gravy, I think the soup was still a good consistency when mixed worth the white rice. Definitely worth a try.

I don’t know that I’ll be returning as I wasn’t a fan of the condescending service. More specifically: when I ask about what kind of gumbo was offered, I was greeted with a smirk and«there’s more than one kind???» Last I looked, one can opt to put just about anything in gumbo and refer to it by its ingredients. However, I didn’t let such treatment stop me as I still ordered. I won’t be ordering again… The gumbo clearly made in big batches as the chicken was quite stringy, the okra was becoming slimier with time, and the sausage was damn near non-existent. I had a few shrimp romping around, but if that’s the normal shrimp for the shrimp component of gumbo, no one needs to order again. This location is kind of small and doesn’t seem to have enough of a presence or foundation that will endure any sort of test of time. There were several other item on the menu that seemed reminiscent of a creole origin, and that may appeal to several other. For me, I’ll stick to local, well-prepared, time-taken, American, yet yummy fare. I may, however, add this to a list for the simple diner that is interested in dining out for homey fare.

The interior of the restaurant was lovely but I wasn’t there to stare at the walls. We ordered gumbo, mac and cheese, crawfish étouffée, and red beans and rice. Everything, as my boyfriend put it, was seasoned very lightly. So lightly, the food was screaming for flavor. I was disappointed but at least it *looked* good enough to eat..

Regardless of what your favorite cousine is and how much you love it, ain’t got nothin’ on this Texiana eatery! It was the perfect first meal of 2016! And the place is so cool and hip, you can tell it’s gonna be good food once you’re inside. Place be vibin’! The menu is so varied, I was amazed! From Tacos and burritos to authentic cajun/creole food, they have it all and I LOVE places that give me options! I had a shrimp taco to start off with and then had the Pasta which literally gave Carrabba’s a run for its money! So much food and flavor in that dish! My friend ordered the Catfish Opelousas which she thoroughly enjoyed and my partner custom-ordered the Tilapia Tout with Catfish and we are thoroughly enjoyed it all. I even had lots for leftovers! I wish I had the chance to try thier bread pudding but until next time. I would highly recommend this restaurant. The quality, the quantity and the value are all unbeatable at this place!

After reading the reviews on Unilocal I decided to bookmark this place for a future visit! Well today I happened to be in the area and was in the mood for a good cajun meal and Gumbo Jeaux was the first place that popped into my mind! Located in the Heights near I-10 this family friendly restaurant is a cozy well appointed café with ample seating and a very warm group of folks working there! As we walked in we were greeted enthusiastically and asked if we had any questions! After mentioning that I discovered their place through Unilocal, we picked up a couple of menus and sat down as we checked out all the great offerings! With so many choices it was kind of hard to decide but we were helped by one of the staff that mentioned that the Catfish Opelousas was the most popular dish! Well after hearing that we decided to order that and a Crawfish Étouffée. When the food came out I was impressed by the generous serving sizes and soon realized why this place was given 5 stars! Gumbo Jeaux has the BEST Cajun cuisine in town! The roux was perfect! And the atmosphere felt so Louisiana. I felt like we were in New Orleans! I was so full by the time I finished lunch I didn’t even have room for the peach cobbler or bread pudding. Perhaps on our NEXT visit! RECAP — If you are in the mood for Cajun food this is perhaps the BEST spot in Houston in my opinion! The staff there were very friendly and helpful and the ambience was nice. Located near a busy freeway in the Heights, this nice family friendly restaurant had the goods! Great food and great service! Check it out!

Tried for First time with Friends. Manager recommended the blackened Catfish Opelusas — EXCELLENT for $ 10 price. also Topped with Fried Shrimp GUMBO — was Good, could have a more Dark Roux flavor — Compared to Pier 61 or Jenivis Seafood Shoppe . Chicken and Waffles Good(Bone-In)

Wait — give me a second, because I am heavy-breathing and crying tears of joy as I reminisce on my experience at Gumbo Jeaux’s. I came with two others on a Tuesday lunch break. The location is a little weird, and you may expect to do a litlte bit of u-turning after missing it the first time — at least, we did. The second thing you need to expect is a little bit of a line, a wait, and maybe just a little bit of trouble finding seating if you’re with a group. We came around 11:45am and were about sixth in line, which happened to be about fifteen minutes before a swarm of people came in, and very soon, the line was almost out the door. The employees are warm and friendly, though. Lots of fun. OKBUTONTOTHEFOOD. YO, ITISHOT and FRESH. We ordered the chicken and waffles, crawfish etouffe, catfish opelousas, pasta lashelle, and a large gumbo. Yes, we ended up finishing it all. But no, I wouldn’t recommend ordering this much if you are planning to stay awake for the rest of the afternoon. My favorites have to be the catfish opelousas — super fresh catfish straight from the grill, topped with some fried shrimp, and served atop of rice and shrimp etouffe — and the crawfish etouffe.(Okay, also the gumbo.) Everything was served spicy, flavorful, and fresh. The only thing I PROBABLY wouldn’t order again would be the pasta lashelle, only because it was a little bit too rich and thick for me. I will definitely be baccckkkk!

Having attended school in New Orleans I was anxious to try Gumbo Jeaux’s. Sometimes I really start craving gumbo, and I was glad to see this place open so close to home. I ordered the shrimp po boy and a bowl of gumbo. The shrimp po box left something to be desired. There were not many shrimp, and it was really sweet. I am not sure what made it so sweet but I was surprised. The gumbo on the other hand was delicious. When I get that craving for gumbo I now know where I will be going. They have parking in the front and the back. The line moves quickly and the service is friendly. Seriously, get the gumbo.

this is by far the BEST cajun restaurant that I’ve eaten at in Houston. I had the pasta LaShelle without sausage and it was AMAZING. Authentic cuisine at an affordable price. Customer service like no other! I WILL be returning!

Thanks to Unilocal turning me on to their Catfish Opelousas, I never feel like ordering fish at Landrys/Pappadeaux ever again! Not only are their dish half the cost, but Gunbo Jeaux’s’ catfish tastes better too! The included fried shrimp was delish, and I loved the gumbo atop the dirty rice. Not everything’s peachy though — fries were so-so. Décor was blah… Food was service slow. They ran out of forks… But overall I’m still a happer camper! If you’re a fan of Landrys/Pappadeaux and you often get the competition’s blackened fish, don’t waste your money anymore unless you absolutely cannot have catfish.

Went here before the yuppie heights flea market tonight. I got the blackened shrimp salad and my boyfriend got the blackened chicken salad. The flavor of the meat was on point! I think if we would have gotten anything else, I would have given this place 5 stars. The salad has a little too much red cabbage for my taste. The lady who checked us out had a I hate my job attitude, but the chef who brought us our food was the nicest guy ever! He really changed my view of the service here. I definitely want to check this place out again.

This place is LEGIT. After coming here, I’d be crazy to go to Pappadeux. Same genre but this place is sooooooooooooooooooo much better, more affordable, has more choices and the folks who work here are soooo incredibly friendly! Catfish Opelousas. Whaaaat. So flavorful without being overwhelming or heavy. How is that possible?! It’s the holy grail. And it’s a LOT of food. The fish is also cooked just right and flakes onto your humble disposable fork. Even their red beans and rice is good. So is their Mac and cheese. The place isn’t fancy but who cares. They are attentive if you have kids. The kids each got a free Honest juice packet. There’s a huge assortment of hot sauces if you need to spice things up. Many varieties I’ve never seen before. I can’t wait to try more of their menu.

Let me start off by saying I do overall like this place, and with a just a bit of tweaking, this could easily be a five star restaurant! The Cajun inspired menu has a wide selection, the prices are great, and the service is inviting and friendly. We arrived on a Friday evening. It was pretty dead, though there was a steady trickle coming in. You approach the counter to order. My companion and I ordered the Catfish Opelousas, fried chicken wings with a side of macaroni and cheese, and the crawfish bisque. The Catfish Opelousas is as good as people say. The two catfish fillets were blackened perfectly, and the dirty rice and etoufee were cooked and seasoned perfectly. This dish was heavenly and definitely the star of the show. My only complaint was that the veggies and the shrimp were on the salty side. Also, there is a cilantro garnish on this dish, so for you cilantro haters, now you know. The chicken wings had great seasoning and flavor. I wish the batter clung a bit more to the chicken instead of falling off as soon as I bit into a wing. They were also very salty. The mac and cheese is similar to Luby’s mac and cheese. This one actually needed more salt, though I put hot sauce on it to give it a little boost. Unfortunately, the mac was just very one dimensional flavor wise though the texture and consistency were fine. The crawfish bisque again had a great flavor, but it was very runny instead of creamy and very, very salty! I’m starting to see a theme here… Almost everything is served in styrofoam. What did really impress me was that wall of hot sauce bottles at the condiment station. They had a bit of everything, and we all know how people like options. This is a big bonus for me! Service was really top notch, and someone came by to check on us. At the end of the meal a manager asked how everything was. My dining partner hates complaining at restaurants, so I didn’t say anything. The meal was still good despite being salty, and we’ll both probably be back.

I came here on a Wednesday night for a UYE and I’m so glad I did! It’s BYOB and this always makes a dining experience more fun! With my Shiner Prickly Pear, I decided on the Catfish Opelousas and I was overjoyed! Two grilled catfish filets over dirty rice with gumbo on top AND fried shrimp ONTOPOFTHAT, I was in heaven. To round out the plate, there was a nice serving of steamed vegetables. At first bite, the fish was fresh and peppery, but not too hot. The rice was perfectly cooked and the taste was remarkable. I also tried a bite of the chocolate cake, and oh wow, was it moist and delicious. The service was polite and friendly. The guys won’t mind loaning you a bottle opener. The parking is ample with overflow parking available in the back. The bathroom is clean and pleasant. This was a great spot for a UYE any time of the week! I can’t wait to return to try more of the menu.
