Let me confess up front I am a tamale freak. Any restaurant that lists tamales will get my order. I have ordered tamales in restaurants across the U.S. A few weeks ago while driving north on North Oak Trfy I spotted the words«homemade tamales» scrawled on a sign plastered on the window of a place I’m unfamiliar with. That’s like a freakin’ red flag to me! I gotta stop, do not pass go, do not waste time with flicking on the turn signal. I stop short and hung a left into Plaza Latina. The place is a small grocery store with a food bar and a couple tables. Sweet! I immediately interrogated the woman behind the counter and found that she is the tamale maker! Score! She had beef, chicken, cheese/pepper, and sweet tamales, homemade sauces, and a few other entrée’s. I ordered a couple beef tamales to eat immediately. They were hot and really good. Then I took home a dozen chicken and a dozen beef, and a couple containers of sauces. The place also sells homemade masa and fillings if you want to make your own. Later that night we had tamale slingers for dinner. That’s tamales topped with chili, cheese, peppers, fried eggs and salsa. Fried potatoes and chili peppers on the side. Cold beer. Van Morrison. Leftovers for breakfast. Heaven on earth.
