Smokebox BBQ Cafe

The office I work at is really close to Smokebox. We went for a quick lunch and were expecting good things based on what we had heard! We couldn’t have had a worse experience. Starting with the rude person at the register who was very unwilling it seemed to answer any questions, to the owner yelling at a customer on the phone over a catering order… it was evident we had picked the wrong place. The brisket tasted sour, and pulled pork was fatty. The onion rings were the ONLY thing I enjoyed about my visit. Unilocalers– Don’t waste your time. Don’t.

Great BBQ fare. The baked beans were awesome as they had a hit of smoke on them. So close to the airport it’s a crime not to check it out.

Had a Ribs and Burnt Ends Lunch Special. Most of the Ribs were not edible for me. So they went to waste. You could not take a bit without unrendered chewy something holding the rib meat onto the bone. They also drenched the ribs in bbq sauce, I should have asked for sauce on the side and dry ribs, but it probably wouldn’t have mattered, since the main problem with them were the quality of the meat. The Burnt Ends were pretty good though. Its only thing that salvaged this from being a 1 star review. The sides were ok at best. Beans tasted like something you could get out of a can, I always expect the beans at bbq restaraunts to have some chunks of brisket or some bbq flavors in them, I didn’t get that here.

Legitimate BBQ near the airport. Super fast service. The beans and corn nuggets are standouts as are the burnt ends.

Delicious BBQ and prompt service! We walked over from our hotel and had a great dinner. Our son loved the chicken tenders and the 2 meat sandwich hit the spot. Reasonable prices and casual atmosphere. If you’re staying at a nearby hotel, try this place!

This is a place to go if you don’t mind eating off disposable plastic plates with disposable plastic knives and forks while eating basic barbecue. The food is OK but not worth making a special trip for. I had the ½ rack of baby back ribs dinner. It came with a small portion of coleslaw, baked beans, and I opted to pay $ 2 more for onion rings. The ribs tasted good but the meat was dry. The sauce was excellent, great balance of sweet smoky and vinegary. Don’t bother paying more for the onion rings, typical food service type. Excellent service. Ok place for a quick meal.

It has been a couple of years since being in KC. But this place was on my list of must get back to. It was as good as I remembered. Not a fancy place but the barbecue is delicious. Outstanding food and value. Burnt ends, pulled pork and brisket are my favorites.

Came here cause it was near the airport. Burnt ends were great and so was the barbecue beans. Decent price and food was good. I expected a bigger portion but I was so happy with the taste it made it worth it.

A great find for using the Kansas City airport. Close enough to grab a bite before or after a flight. Large portions with good fries and pulled pork. Nice sauces & great people working there. Atmosphere is fun & TVs available. Much better than anything in the airport!

Terrible service. My friend and I came in at 8:50 at night and the place closes at 10:00. The girl serving us rushed us to order our food as they wouldn’t cook after 9:00. My order was also inaccurate when the food came out and she said they couldn’t cook any more. The food wasn’t that great either. While we were eating, our server sat there on her phone not paying attention to us. She didn’t offer to refill our drinks or anything. Safe to say we will never be back. I also wasn’t surprised either to see a help wanted sign on their door. Hopefully they can hire some decent people and turn this sinking ship around.

A co-​worker and I came here before going to the airport. I ordered the pork and brisket sandwich with fries. He got the pork sandwich and fries. The house barbeque was very good. The sandwiches were average as well as the fries.
This is a great stop before the airport and is ten times better than the food there. Stop by to eat better and spend half the money than at the airport.

Haven’t really tried barbecue in KC before. Lame i know. Tried this place out while staying in town. Wow. Great food, drink, and service. Not to mention the smell of barbecue in this place was outstanding. Highly recommend this place. We will be back for sure.

Great value and good quality food. Not too sweet. Lean tender meat. Friendly staff and quick service. We got there just in time as a bunch of work folks came in.

KC is a BBQ town. There’s a lot of gourmet Q and then, there is a lot of garbage Q. Smokebox isn’t gourmet like Jack Stack but it’s pretty good stuff. Don’t fall for the big name joints that have made TV shows like Triple D. Most of those places suck. At Smokebox, the ribs, beans and slaw are solid. The bacon cheeseburger and the onion rings have become a few of my favorites too! Great service, wonderful owners and staff and good affordable food. They have ice cold beer too! If you’re on the way to KCI, or staying in a nearby hotel, you’ll be pleased.

Was there for lunch on a Tuesday at 11. Seating and service was fast. Ordered two meat lunch combo. Beef brisket Burt ends and chicken. Subbed beans for slaw and sweet potato fries for fries. Everything was brought correctly! Beans and chicken were awesome. Chicken was some of the best I’ve had for white meat Bbq. Finger linking good for sure! Don’t miss the chicken. KC offers a lot of Bbq. This is good for sure.

4 stars because of the value. Best bang for the buck. Lunch was $ 10.99 for pork ribs and burnt ends with two sides. The burnt ends are delicious and the cheesy corn is so good. That said, the pork ribs are average. But the price with speedy service gives Smokehouse a 4 out of 5.

Not sure about those low scores… an Associate of mine and I both ate here and both were very impressed! Fantastic BBQ beans, great sauce and tender meats. If yippy don’t want the sauce in the meats just ask for the sauce on the side.
Also, they serve steak Graus not the cheap little crap. Will defiantly return!

Driven past here many times on 29 and decided to stop on the way out of town. It was smack at lunch time on a Saturday and there was one lady with her small child in here. Ok, that’s usually a bad sign. It looked like a family owned place and the whole family was working here, I can live with and support that. The lady who served me was nice and helpful enough. I ordered the brisket, burnt ends, cheesy corn, and baked beans.
My food was out in, and I timed it, less than two minutes. I commented on how fast it was and she was quick to point out that they stop the pit earlier in he day and this or that, which I really was just glad/​surprised about it… Oh well. Brisket, like other have said, is terrible. Tastes like thin sheets of paper, but it’s edible with sauce on it. Burnt ends were actually super good. I wasn’t expecting much but the burnt ends were awesome! And I love my burnt ends. Baked beans could have been canned for all I know. Cheesy corn was a tad too liquidy but I enjoyed them. Reasonable prices.
I don’t think I would make it out of my way to come here, but it sure is in a convenient spot for travelers.

Smoke box BBQ, been here a ton of times, had them cater several parties… I always remember the start of the food at my parties, but the later it gets, the fuzzier the food gets… but keep coming back…
Today is a dine in day with my wife. As usual, we both ordered the same thing, as we both enjoy our choices. She goes healthy, with the large signature salad, with smoked ham, turkey and beef, lettuce, cheese, croûton and more. She loves it, it has the benefit of the smoked meats, without the heaviness and calories of the bread and sauce. She does steal a couple of the large cut French fries from my plate.
I always get the two meat special with double fries. I love dipping the fries in their BBQ sauce, it has a smooth, sweet flavor. I like the smoked turkey and sausage meats. The turkey is always very flavorful, but it’s the sausage that I really like. They slice the sausage like the other meats, thin, so you get all the flavor without the heavy casing some sausages have. It’s a simple meal, and they always do it right.
The dinning area is simple, a small counter and seating for 30 – 40 people. At lunch today it was packed, lots of people eating rib platters, but we stayed with the usual.
If your in the area and want good, simple BBQ, at a reasonable price, give this a try.

The only thing I distinctly remember when stopping here for takeout was the management talking trash about someone else in front of customers within obvious earshot! Namely some unknown woman. I felt totally weirded out and very uncomfortable that someone behind the counter would be joking around about something like that. In public. In front of customers. Ick. Super Ick. Plus food was less than mediocre. Haven’t gone back.
