The gallery «Africa and Beyond» just celebrated their 25th anniversary and I have been their customer since the inception. What stands out about the owners, Ian and Julie, is that they have never lost sight of what matters: the love for the art and the continent it comes from. They continue to share their enthusiasm and knowledge, explain the differences and yet quite often equal beauty of old, ceremonially used pieces and new work artfully crafted. In addition they have always supported local African artisans. As a long time collector of African art I find their prices extremely fair and below what many others are selling African art for. In addition to some of the pieces that adorn my house, there rarely is a day when I do not wear something that came from «Africa and Beyond» reminding me of them.

Stopped by on my stroll through La Jolla. I’m African and was walking in more of curiousity to see what kind of kitsch passes for African art in these parts.
Was very pleasantly surprised. Great collection and Ian is very personable and knowledgeable. If my pockets were heavier, I would have walked out with a lot of stuff. Definitely a great spot in a great area.

Whether you are an African art novice or learned collector, this fantastic gallery is a space you need to visit at least once. The sheer cornucopia of artworks and artifacts emerged from a wide variety of African countries is impressive and commendable. Not only is it impressive for its diversity but also its selective quality. Entering here results into an African art immersion that no introductory African art history course can emulate. Chi Wara sculptures, Baule spirit spouse figurines, and an entire collection of Shona sculpture, as well as Kente cloth or Zulu clubs are just the tip of the iceberg in terms of display elements. One of the pillars of Non Western Art galleries in San Diego. A must see.
