DR RICHARD TRAINER

Dr Trainer is an artist who happens to practice Optometry. I’ve never had a more thorough exam, or a better-​matched prescription. It’s true that the office is not located in a strip mall with parking, but rather in beautiful La Jolla. Finding a parking meter for your appointment is worth it.

We recently went to Dr. Trainer for an eye exam for my daughter. He was very thorough and took his time, explaining all the steps to her. We were very pleased with our first experience at this office — the staff, Monica and Suzanne, were also very helpful and pleasant. We will certainly be back for regular appointments to see Dr. Trainer.

Dr. Trainer and his staff are always very welcoming, knowledgable and helpful.
I have about 3 pairs of glasses from them and heading in shortly for my 4^th. They have a great selection of frames available and often find it hard to narrow it down to just one since there are so many nice ones to pick from.
Parking can be the only minor issue as they do not have a designated parking lot however if you loop around or head a block away in either direction you will easily find a spot.

Years ago when I was a dirt-​poor student, I came to Dr. Trainer to try to get a new pair of glasses. I had hoped my father’s health insurance would cover everything, but unfortunately, I would have to pay for frames.
Dr. Trainer knew I didn’t have the money to buy frames. The ones I chose were literally the least expensive ones I could find. He told me that those had just been discontinued, but if I wanted them, he could let me have the display frames for free.
I was overwhelmed with gratitude. I offered to pay in installments, but he wouldn’t take it. He said instead that if I ever find myself in a position to help someone out, to pay it forward.
I will never forget that and make a point to «pay it forward» whenever I can. Thanks Doc, you changed my life.

The doctor is nice and knowledgeable but location is bad with parking being the #1 issue since you have to find metered parking and it’s really busy. Staff is also friendly (except for one who got a bit snappy with me) but they need to be more organized. The cost of a follow up appt of 15 minutes is too expensive should be free especially for first time customers.

I’m seriously near-​sighted and also suffer from vision issues common to middle-​aged folks. I have been unhappy with the glasses I got in the past few years — they either give me headaches or make me tear up. Upon recommendation from my boss, I visited Dr. Trainer recently and was vastly impressed. Despite my delayed arrival due to trouble at finding parking, Dr. Trainer took his time to give me a most thorough exam. Because it is for sunglasses and I need to see distance well, I had my doubts when he gave me a prescription with less optical power than before. However, I was in love with the new pair as soon as I tried it on. Not only am I very happy with my distance vision, but amazingly I can work on cell phone with it on as well. I think he also corrected my problem with double vision. I am grateful for Dr. Trainer’s tremendous expertise, and I know that several prominent people at my work see him. His staff is knowledgeable and helpful as well. The last thought is that even though I ended up getting a parking ticket, I was not even grouchy when writing this check!

My family and I have been patients of Dr Trainer and staff for over 20 years. They feel like family. Dr Trainer readily evaluated me for LASIK even though it has meant greatly diminished business over the past 7 years. When our house burned down 9 years ago, he and staff bent over backwards to help us. Moreover, they continue to take a personal interest that goes well beyond the fine professional services offered. I’d give them 100 stars if I could. No finer optometrist in town.

I stopped by this store today, and asked them to tighten the screw on my glasses. Not only did they fix my glasses for free, they gave me advice about my next eye appointment and my eye insurance for free as well! The doctor was friendly, professional and willing to help me, and the staff were knowledgeable and bustling around. I highly recommend this establishment, and plan to book my next appointment soon.

Everybody in here was so friendly, helpful and knowledgeable. They spend a lot of time working with you to make sure you are picking out the right set of glasses and going through any number of choices you have with lenses. I was definitely treated like a valued customer, even though I hadn’t gotten my prescription through them. Will definitely be making Dr. Trainer my new optometrist.

Slow people, not well organized. They can cancel your appointment at the last minute but they ask you to cancel with a 24h notice.
