The Cheesemonger’s Shop

If you love cheese, wine or beer, you will also love this shop. They are mostly a cheese shop but have a small selection of beers and wines that are very reasonably priced. I was impressed that there was no markup, which is what I expected because it’s a tourist town.
To get here you have to go down a set of stairs and end up in a basement shop about 500 square feet, with two cheese counters along with a fridge full of fresh sausages (including the ones you can get at munchen haus — yum!).
We tried a bunch of cheeses and ended up buying five of our favorites — my top favorite was cheese with chives and onions. They have a great selection of brie, bleu cheese, Gouda, cheddar and havarti. Service was super friendly and we didn’t feel rushed at all.
There’s also chocolates and specialty foods from England and Germany, including my favorite chocolate brand Milka.
It’s a fun shop to swing into on your way out of town to grab some goodies for the road or home, or while in town to make an awesome cheese plate for an evening snack.
I’ll definitely be back here next time I’m in Leavenworth.

The boyfriend and I are on vacation in Leavenworth, and the one place I wanted to stop by was the cheesemongers shop! The boyfriend loves hard, smelly, tangy cheeses while I prefer soft, «safe» cheese.
We walked in and right away were helped by the nicest guy before he handed us over to Amanda. She was so knowledgable, and after a bevy of samples got my boyfriend exactly what he was looking for-​a hard 4-​year-​old aged cheddar from Beecher’s. After a few more samples we were able to find me a jalapeño Havarti. Perfect!
She also walked us through the different cured meats and even more samples. We got a baby salami and a summer sausage because we couldn’t agree on meat.
If you love cheese but don’t know a lot about what your flavor palate, come here. If you are fancy and love cheese, come here!

The prices were great. The staff was wonderful and helpful. I didn’t want to buy huge portions and they ¼ pound sizes for cheese and meat. It basically mad me go cheese crazy and buy so many different types. I would highly recommend the Coconut… Gouda? It was smooth and delicious. We also bought habanero, ginger and Thai jellies… they go SO incredibly well with the cheese. Great experience. Great prices. Knowledgable and friendly staff. I will always stop by there whenever I head up there again.

The staff were super friendly and let us taste several cheeses’ before we bought a few different types. Good selection of German beers for purchase. We didn’t get any sausage but it looked like they had a good selection. Will definitely return next time we are in town.

I love this store. In fact, it may be my favorite store of any type.
The staff is very helpful. They are happy to offer samples of their cheeses (not sure on their meats). The cheeses are excellent! Bought some liverwurst tonight and can’t wait to try it with the excellent aged Gouda they had in store today.
So, if you find yourself in Leavenworth and happen to like cheese, this is a must visit shop.

Best cheese I have ever had. Friendly staff and they gave out lots of samples. I had no intention of buying but only looking to see what they had, however the cheese was so delicious I couldn’t resist.

We ALWAYS stop here, no matter what, when we’re in town. The servers are always so friendly. My husband was made especially happy because we bought a 1 lb wedge of coconut gouda, his favorite discovered in Cheesemonger’s. We were also given a complimentary discount off the wedge and only paid $ 17.00 We were also asked this time if we wanted to try a random sample. I was a little nervous but pleasantly surprised by the lavender goat cheese I was given.

A dangerous place. As soon as you’re walking in they are offering you samples of the cheese. I walked out with an aged gouda and triple cream brie. They also carry hard to find Lebanon Bologne, which my friends went crazy for. Prices are very reasonable compared to other side of mountains. Also discovered a honey mustard sauce they were sampling on this trip. Loved the staff and appreciate what they have to deal with:)

This place is a cheese lover’s dream come true! The Cheesemonger may not have the largest selection, but they do have cheese I have never heard of before!
Their staff are cheese lovers themselves, super enthusiastic and are not shy to recommend you their favourite!
The minimal amount of cheese is a quarter of a pound, which really is plenty (for a lactose intolerant such as myself). The pricing is decent, i just love that you can sample any cheese your heart desires (that’s in the shop, of course)
When we went to pay, they even asked if we wanted plates and a plastic knife in case we want to eat it! Quite a thoughtful touch. I can’t wait to indulge on my cheeses!

I walked in with no intention of actually buying cheese… Though I do love cheese. I walked out with over $ 45 of cheese, sausage, and beer.
Their little samples of cheese are gonna get you if you are lucky enough to try them. My entire family tried the applewood smoked cheddar and could not believe our taste buds. So incredibly delicious. Another favorite was the cheese that is loaded with chives.
They have a nice selection of sausages, European beers and other German groceries items as well.
Try the laeger (sp?) smoked sausage that they keep on the counter. It is outstanding.

They were so accommodating to us. We got to try 5 – 6 different cheeses based on our preferences. The smoked cheddar was amazing. Great selection of beers, too.

We visited last year and weren’t impressed. Turns out the reason we weren’t impressed was because we didn’t know they would give you samples of any cheese you asked to try. This year we asked and this year we were impressed.
The employee who was serving us was friendly and knowledgeable. The cheese sample he was handing out was the chedder/​onion chive which he described as tasting like a baked potato. He was right. This was an incredible cheese. We also really liked and bought the applewood smoked cheddar and the cave aged Gruyère. Don’t think you know Gruyère until you’ve tasted this cheese. It’s not the mild stuff you find in the supermarket deli cases; this is Gruyère which rivals the best Parmigiano-​Reggiano in taste and quality.
The Cheesemonger’s Shop is a must-​visit in Leavenworth. If it’s too crowded around the cheese counter, just come back later when it might be less crowded. That’s what we did and we were well-​rewarded for it.

The cheese here is to die for! We bought ¼ lb of the Vampire Slayer and one of their specialty sausages and it didn’t disappoint!

Different from what I expected when reading the reviews. Initially I didn’t see the hype in a deli. There was one guy handing out samples of their apple wood cheddar, and that’s about it. Boring.
We reached the counter and our cheese monger was just insanely helpful. We tried everything and anything we wanted and he was really knowledgeable to get us the cheese we wanted. We weren’t planning on buying anything when we came in but after sampling at the counter we couldn’t say no.
Despite the huge crowd we weren’t rushed to buy and our tastings were not cut short in any way. Great service, great cheese! We bought the honey bee Gouda!

Don’t let the pungent smell when you enter the shoppe distract you from keeping your eye on the prize!
Cheese is aged, smoked, flavored and including different regions and animals to boot! These kind ladies & gentleman are very approachable, not pompous and great resources into the cheese world.
I always felt intimidated by these type of shops as the employees know what they are doing and I do not. I must establish trust ad rapport quickly in order to work forward and the courage to ask about and experience new cheeses.
The staff asked if I like this type and that type while establishing a good baseline as to what direction we should travel. I started with younger while cheeses and worked through some of the more funky, pungent, well-​aged varieties. The samples are generous which makes for a memorable experience. I know I tasted an espresso infused cheddar? Wild combinations along with outstanding selection.
If you are staying in hotel the staff provides small paper plates and plastic utensils for cutting etc. They an awesome supply of local, craft beers – most are room temp and the cooler supply is small. The meat selection is reasonable. This is a MUST for any vacationers.

It’s downstairs and the entrance is unassuming, but this place is is wonderful. There’s a lot of good cheese to try. The people very happy and helpful, encouraging you to give any cheese a try. The person helping us had some really good suggestions. The prices are reasonable.
We walked in for some cheese to compliment the wines we picked up in town. We tried a lot of wonderful cheese and ended up with a delicious assortment.

I don’t know how rest of the employees are at the Cheesemonger’s shop but a particular loud guy was incredibly rude and for lack of a better word, douchey. I don’t normally eat cheese and was getting cheese for a friend. When I asked if a certain cheese was there, he was extremely short and practically ignored me. I asked for a small piece to go and when I asked if he had change for a $ 20 to pay for the cheese, he yelled in a super sarcastic tone «who hasn’t seen a $ 20? Are you serious?» This was followed by repeating this phase and laughing at me TO MY FACE.
I’m can’t comment on the quality of their cheese but this douchebag alone is enough of a turn off for me. Not acceptable.

I love this place! They have tons of different cheeses and you can try free samples before you decided what you want. They also have a meat selection that you can try as well. We’ve only had bad customer service here once, one of the other employees quickly tried to make us happy after it happened. If you love cheese and are in Leavenworth you definitely need to stop here!

CHEESE galore!
They import cheeses from around the world so you’re bound to find something that you like. Not sure what it is? Curious about a particular one? Just ask for a sample and they’re more than happy to help you out.
I tried a few — raspberry infused, coconut flavored, cranberry chipotle — and they were all really good. I asked the girl behind the counter what her favorite was and she said «oh geeez…» and took a while to decide because she had so many! She ended up giving me a sample of the Midnight Gouda, and I can see why she loved that so much.
To take home, I purchased some of the coconut cheese just because it was so unique. It had a subtle coconut flavor but wasn’t sweet or overpowering.
Along with cheeses, they also offered a selection of meats and beers. A one stop-​shop, really. Great place to pick up a snack.

Soo delicious! Love cheese and this place was awesome! Its cute that its located downstairs and gives you a warm vibe. They had sample white cheddar cheese. It was yummy! The staff is friendly and my friend and I left with some cheese. I highly recommend their vast assortment of cheese and local wines.
