Bad news. I purchased an ottoman from the store and decided to return it shortly afterward, and received a store credit rather than a refund as it was a sale item. I was fine with this, and the owner offered to help us design another piece based on a picture we had. He was very helpful and patient as we selected swatches, worked out the measurements, etc. It became a problem once the order was actually placed. The owner told me it would probably be about four weeks. This was in November or December, and I waited until January before calling, figuring it would take a little longer due to the holidays. Unfortunately, every time I would call to politely ask how the ottoman was coming, I was either told the owner would call me back, or if I reached the owner himself(which happened rarely), I was told he would have to talk to the upholsterer then let me know. He never would. This went on for four months. I was never called by the store with any kind of update or time estimate. Through it all I remained polite, which may have been my mistake. Meanwhile, they still had my $ 700 store credit, money I could have used. Finally, in April, we let them know that we needed the piece immediately, and were told it was still 3 – 4 weeks away. That time passed, without so much as an update, and were then(finally) given a delivery date. They agreed to deliver the piece to my house and not charge more than the original store credit. When the piece arrived at the end of April, it was the wrong design. The measurements and the pattern were not what we had agreed on with the store. We sent it back with the delivery men and the owner told me he would look at it that afternoon and call me. I never heard back. I tried calling the following Wednesday, only to be told by someone at the store that the owner had still not looked at the piece, but he would be calling me shortly. Again, there was never a call. In the end I had to call my bank and make a claim. They credited me the $ 700 and are now dealing with Shelter’s bank. I don’t think Shelter is out to rip anyone off. I just think they don’t really care, and they’re terribly unprofessional and disorganized. Perhaps they do well enough selling their floor models, but I certainly wouldn’t recommend this place to anyone. I certainly wouldn’t trust them with a custom piece. If anything, I feel like they took advantage of my patience.

Gorgeously sleek modern furniture can be found in this perfectly open and airy store. The deconstructed chaise lounge in a rich charcoal wool and walnut wood I fell in love with would be worth every penny of the $ 1750 price tag if buying it didn’t mean I would have to eat top ramen for a month straight in order to afford it. Still, a lifetime of fabulous style may be worth inflated sodium and cholesterol levels… All the furniture they sell works together, meaning one stop here and you could have your entire living room or bedroom taken care of. Dressers, nightstands and coffee tables painted dove grey or medium brown, with the woodgrain highlighted in contrasting shades share thematic elements that beg you to think about your home as a cohesive sum of parts. They had an amazing full-length mirror that was almost sculptural in nature and which forgoes the usual form vs function tussle by moving beyond, into a perfect amalgamation of the two that makes exorbitant costs suddenly seem so very practical. Staff was a little distant, but that just meant I was free to peruse as I wished. They also carry beautiful pillows and bedding, including a white quilted throw that at $ 520 was by far the most overly opulent item I saw. The furniture is definitely a wise investment though, pieces that are contemporary enough to feel fresh but not so trendy you’ll hate them in a few years time.
