We contracted with TDS to do a kitchen remodel including a new foundation under an aging back porch and kitchen expansion into that space. From project scoping to finish, we found their communication, design style, and construction skill to be as good as we could ask for. The people we worked with really tried to understand what we wanted and made sure that we understood the tradeoffs we were making to get there. People who see the new kitchen have often commented about how well it fits with the rest of the house. We couldn’t be happier with how it turned out. TDS has a reputation as one of the best old-home remodeling companies around. After living in and heavily using the new kitchen for over 6 months, we can affirm that the reputation is well earned. Some would say that, along with this, TDS is high priced. All the research we did leading into this job indicated that, if we wanted a remodeling firm that was going to do justice to our nice old home, pay their people well, and stand behind their work, we were going to be in the price range that TDS came in at. In the end the contract and pricing was very transparent and reasonable. The other review here, regarding inflexibility of contract language, is really missing the point of reviewing this company.

Not consumer-friendly. ****Read the fine print in the contract.**** I had approached TDS regarding home energy improvements since they were reputable in Madison, WI and I had heard positive things. After getting initial estimates I was asked to sign a 4 page contract before work could be scheduled; having a written agreement seemed reasonable. Although this was a relatively low dollar project, I decided to review the contract with my attorney who specializes in this area. Almost all of the liability is pushed to the home owner. Since I was otherwise pleased with TDS to this point, we made a handful of small proposed changes to the contract that would have yielded a more balanced agreement. TDS was unwilling to consider any changes to its contract and declined the project outright. The message here is that TDS Custom Construction will take your money and do your project but only under their rigid terms. Contracts have to take the interests of both parties into account in order to yield mutually-positive end results.
