Cannery Row General Store

I love, love, love this place! It’s always a shop I hit when in the area. Yes, it’s SUPER pricey and I never buy anything when I’m there. But, it’s so much fun to look around in and the employees I’ve run across the times I’ve been here have been friendly and fun to talk to. My mom doesn’t like this shop because «it has nasty stuff». Damn — that’s why I come here! Tons of gag gifts, crazy array of eclectic alcohol, big selection of fun tshirts that aren’t the run of the mill baby blue shirt with the cute otter saying Monterey above it. As I said it’s really expensive and I always leave wishing it was cheaper. Four stars for the cool employees and rad stock of stuff. I would have given them five if it weren’t for the prices.
All in all — I’ll be back for sure. It’s a fun store for adults.

Avoid this place — TOTAL RIP-​OFF
We made the mistake of walking into this store on 2÷15÷11 — while on a get-​away to Monterey. This sales clerk was a complete jerk — my husband purchased some Visine Eye Drops and I purchased some earrings.
The guy rings up the order and says, that will be $ 32.46? The earrings
were $ 17.00 — understandable, (although they have already turned my ear lobes green) — but the real shocker was that the Visine was $ 12.99 for a tiny bottle — $ 12.99? are you kidding? We said, forget it, we’ll walk
up to the CVS for that kind of price — The guy says that all sales are final — my husband points out that the sale isn’t final until we hand him the cash — then he tells us that we are getting a deal, because he sells
cigarettes for $ 15.00 a pack??? There was a bottle of tequila priced at 2 THOUSAND dollars — it looked, small and cheap — the clerk tells us it’s because the bottle has platinum in the design — is this a joke?
Anyway, I thought that the clerk had run our credit card for the purchase, and if I had known he had not run the card, we would
have just walked out — but he so quickly snatched the cash from my husbands hand, we basically had no recourse. We certainly didn’t want to deal with law enforcement — hopefully, Karma will get these people.
We mentioned our unfortunate experience to other retailers and wait staff at the places we visited — all of them telling us that the owner of the General store owns all the candy stores, is a total jerk, and rips all the tourists AND THE LOCALS off whenever he gets a chance — hence, we didn’t purchase our normal mother-​load of taffy in Monterey — nor any other souveniers at all — in fact, this experience had us close our wallets for the duration of our 3-​day stay — we were leary of all the shops after that. The Better Business Bureau must have file on this place — AVOID at all costs.

Passed by the Cannery Row General Store this afternoon when I was in Monterey on my way to Pebble Beach Golf Links AT&T Pro AM Golf tournament. OMG, I looked in and saw that this store was so packed with stuff that there was no way I was about to step foot in that place cuz I probably wouldn’t have fit it the store it was so packed to the max. Looked like a jam packed toy/​convenience store gone wild.
Toys, toys, and more toys, chips, sodas and snacks.

I called the Cannery Row General Store to ask a simple question. The guy who answered the phone was very rude. First, he picked up the phone and proceeded to finish off 15 seconds worth of a conversation with a co-​worker before even greeting me. He then proceeded to be insulting and rude when i asked for what i was interested in.
There are plenty of these stores in Monterey — skip this one and go somewhere else!
