Great place to get a ton of sushi at an affordable price. If you go on any weekday between 4 – 8 pm the menu is half price with card or cash, however the gratuity is added to the check when you get it. The sushi is overall good, but really varies based on your tastes. I personally love the Easton roll and pretty much any roll with Tuna. The rolls with anything fried are heavy and at times can be a little too greasy. The Ramen soups were good as well. I would recommend avoiding the spicy ramen soup unless you have the stomach for very spicy food. I thought I was accustomed to spicy food, however the spicy ramen was too much for me, and I could only go through half before I called it a quits. The service is spotty. Most of the time you will get the bare minimum of service; they will give you drinks and food and that is about it. On one occasion however, the waiter was incredibly stressed and jumping between tables constantly. I ordered a water, and after several promises to get the water it never happened. Compared to most other Japanese restaurants, Edo is without a doubt one of the most affordable places to go to while still getting quality food.

I always go to Edo on weekdays from 4 pm — 8 pm when everything on their menu is half-priced(but be aware that 15% tip is already added into the bill). Considering they are located right in the middle of college town, this is an affordable place for college students to get Japanese food. FOOD: The food is very fresh and very decent sushi for the price that you’re paying. My rule of thumb when trying a new sushi place is always order the rolls they name after them. If it’s a classic, it has to be good right? I also always order the Crunchy Tuna Rainbow Roll(favorite on the menu). From time to time, I also get their special of ramen rolls and a side dish of tuna roll. The ramen isn’t super fancy and there isn’t anything that makes it special, but if you have a ramen craving, the ramen here can satisfy it. AMBIANCE: There is a front and back of the restaurant. In the front, there are 6 tables and you can watch the people walking in and out of the restaurant so it’s a bit on the louder side. The back is a little more quiet and intimate. It’s also BYOB. SERVICE: The waiters are very nice. However, a down side is the amount of time it takes to get attention at this place. You can’t blame the wait staff because they are always busy; it just seems like this place is always understaffed. The food takes a while to come out and once you finish eating, it can take you a long time to get the check. On multiple occasions, I have waited 15 – 20 minutes for the check and at last had to go up to the counter to request it. If you don’t have time to have a long meal, take it to go. OVERALL: Good place if you have time to spare and a sushi craving.

Went here for the ramen. Ordered the combo. Decent katsu, but poor ramen. Not worth the full price really, if you’re going to charge for ramen like it’s your passion, you need to deliver. Skimpy toppings on the vegetable ramen: two small pieces of broccoli, some carrot shavings and two pieces of tofu skin, floating in a pond of miso broth with some noodles. My friend ordered the shoyu ramen. There was one very thin slice of fish cake and a very thin slice of pork. If you want noodles, stick to noodles gourmet. Did not try the sushi.

The sushi is pretty good, especially for the half price deal from 4 to 8 on weekdays! I hear they accept credit cards for the special now, but I haven’t tried. The ramen is pretty good btw! The biggest downside to edo is that they screw up the bill really often! They charge a gratuity fee and even with that factored in, my friends and I have had bills $ 30 more than it should have been. It’s pretty ridiculous, but as long as you check the bill you should be fine.

I looooove Edo! I will admit I usually do not get the fish based sushi, but I do get their udon soups or their sweet potato roll. Honestly, half off sushi is the best when you’re trying to have a satisfying meal without spending a lot. Oh and their bento boxes are good too!

Eh. I’ve had better rolls from a grocery store. I waited almost 20 minutes, in an empty restaurant, for 2 Spicy Tuna Rolls. The tuna looks off color and I’m afraid to eat them. Waste of $.

Can’t compete with the other options in the area, even at reduced price. Sushi was alright but didn’t taste fresh and just didn’t have anything unique about it. Service is also much slower during the half off times due to demand, and it just isn’t worth waiting for. Wouldn’t recommend.

First off, I would never pay full price for Edo. They’re quite expensive for the quality of their food. I would recommend going during their half off times– during which you may have to wait 30 minutes to an hour for a seat and for your food. Saying this, I always order take out and bring it back to my place. I’ve tried their ramen and udon once before and was SO disappointed in how tasteless it was and how little they gave. A lot of people get these dishes so maybe it was a bad day(?) but I’d rather not do that again. Their sushi rolls are average, but hits the spot when you need a quick sushi fix for a cheap price. My go to meal is the eel avocado and spicy tuna roll with a miso soup on the side. Overall, this is a good place to get rolls(during half off hours) especially for college kids and budget friendly people, but not so much if you want a «nicer meal».

Way below low quality of foods. The half price you get is what the food meant to be. All frozen fish for sushi. They even served the fish which was not fully defrosted.(Please consider using microwave defrosting features) The entrée from the kitchen is made with the ingredients that can be found in cheapest aisle in asian grocery stores. $ 14 shrimp tempura Udon only has tiny two shrimps, noodle, and carrot. Had $ 110 for dinner, and with 50% discount, it charged $ 55 with 15% mandatory tips. Even I got 50% discount, I couldn’t satisfied. In consideration of discounted price, it is still way too expensive for the quality of food. Seriously, Stop and shop sushi is much better than this place. This place is the first one star review in my Unilocaling ever. Tips: 10pcs of sushi+one roll is $ 30 at Edo where serves frozen fish. 10pcs of sushi+one roll is $ 35 at Japanese restaurant in Manhattan near Wall Street where serves outstanding quality of sushi.

If you’re looking for quality over quantity, Edo is definitely not the place for you. The only reasons why I go to Edo is because they have half off the ENTIREMENU4 – 8 on the week days(cash or card) AND it’s BYOB. It’s also super convenient for all RU students because you can walk there in just a few minutes. I’ve been to Edo many times since I started school at Rutgers. My opinion still stands that I’d never pay full price for Edo’s sushi. They rolls are always decent, but never great. I’ve haven’t tried their entrée items, which are also half price, so maybe those are better than the sushi. Oddly, my boyfriend and I are INLOVE with the miso soup. It’s by far the best miso soup we’ve ever had. I had to update my review because the service used to be REALLY poor. However, they last few times that I went, the service was perfectly fine. They really stepped up their service game. The half price deal, BYOB, and convenient location makes is a good spot for Rutgers students. To people outside of RU, the parking around Edo is horrendous and just not worth going.

as a recent rutgers grad, i definitely went here alllll the time. i mean, half off the entire menu weekdays from 4 – 8?! it doesnt get better. im usually satisfied when i come here. my go to roll is the golden california — with salmon, avocado and crab, and tempura outside it never disappoints. one of my only complaints is that it gets pretty crowded on friday nights, and their service is horrendous. usually all the waiters work all the tables so its hard to get a specific person’s attention and it takes ATLEAST45 mins to get your food. on any other night though its not bad. also byob!

Still adventuring the world of sushi, I have liked all of my experiences here. The chicken teriyaki roll and munchy crunchy are winners in my book!

If Edo was dropping its latest mixtape, it would be along the line of «half off everything, including food quality!» When you go here you basically have hit rock bottom. And it’s amazing. I don’t understand why people complain about soggy, mushy rice, stomach aches and finding hair in their ramen. If I wanted a Dragonroll made of finely mashed cucumbers, thinly brushed teriyaki sauce that covers more surface area than Donald Trump’s hair, and a heap amount of avocado that is thinner than Mayweather’s current must-read book, I would happily find myself here. Typically I only eat at Edo when Rutgers really have its shit together, so I guess that’s pretty often. Whatever, it’s still good and it’s gonna make me never wanna come back even if it’s endorsed by Ryan Seacrest. I highly recommend this place for any couple who’s looking to have their quick break up here. Anyway, great service at Edo. Four slaps.

I read all the reviews about how horrible the ramen was so my expectations were super low. Maybe that’s why I was pleasantly surprised. I got the spicy ramen combo with a salmon roll and it was perfect for the cold rainy weather. Oh and warning: the spicy ramen is SPICY! I was surprised they don’t warn you. I love making my food super spicy so I was able to handle(and really really enjoy) it but I can see people who are even used to spicy food having trouble eating it. The roll was decent as well, it was nice and light and complimented the strong flavors of the ramen well. The ambience was pretty nice too and the restaurant was packed and lively. For $ 10 including tip, a big bowl of ramen and some sushi was perfect. Oh! And the 50% off special now applies with credit card too, not just cash only! Heads up if you’re going with a group though, you can only use one card per table so they won’t split the check for you.

So they have a 50% off the entire menu from 4−8PM. Which is pretty nice. But it does somewhat backfire I think in that it reminds you that you probably would not pay for anything for full price. Interior of the restaurant is nicer than what the exterior would suggest. Service is prompt, but take that with a grain of salt since there were very few people eating when I went. Food comes out at a reasonable pace, but I wonder how they fare with a full house. I ordered a crunchy salmon avocado roll, as well as a chicken teriyaki bento special. It was a decent amount of food, but I have to say that the roll was kind of bland. A little sad for me since my favorite type of sushi fish is salmon. Ultimately this is the only sushi place that I am aware of near Easton Ave, and if you get the bento special during happy hour, it will come out to be around 14 dollars total including tax and tip. If you want to be full while spending relatively low amount for Japanese food, I’d suggest Edo. If you want flavorful sushi, maybe try somewhere else.

I’ve been here about 4 times, and each experience got progressively worse. First time, I got a chicken roll, which tasted good but since it was not during happy hour, was a bit pricey for the small portion. 2nd time, I was here during happy hour, which seems like a good deal because it is 50% off if paid in cash. So I ordered a pork ramen with a side tuna roll. Taste overall was actually pretty good: ramen was a good portion, soup base was savory, and the tuna roll added to a filling meal for a cheap price. About a year later, I came back and got the same ramen and tuna roll again during happy hour, but it was really disappointing: bland soup base, small portion of ramen, tuna roll not good. And the 4TH time I came back was just an absolute waste of money. I ordered the worst shrimp roll i had ever tasted: I could barely taste the shrimp because what little was in the roll included 90% lettuce and mayonnaise(?). It was pretty gross. So as much as I liked this place a few years ago, my last few visits have disappointed me beyond repair, so I will not be back.

Quick update: 1 star downgrade. :( I’ve always dined in at Edo but I tried takeout today. The food was disappointing. They pack the sushi in a small styrofoam box so my roll was falling apart and smushed when I opened it up. My entrée order’s portion was pretty small and haphazardly thrown together. I understand it’s takeout so the presentation won’t be great, but this fell below my expectation.

the skinny: I was expecting so much more from this place. service is understaffed so there’s long waits. The food was either dense with rice or really lacking flavor. Not worth coming even if they have special deals. the details: From the moment my friend and I walked in it was bad. there were 2 people operating at the front of the room. The girl was taking phone calls while the guy was serving the tables. 2 separate groups walked right in front of us to place take out orders before we were even acknowledged. It’s take out– fine, I can make that exception. Once they were gone, the waiter finally sat us down and apologized for the wait which I can understand because I used to be a waiter also. we both ordered a ramen combo with a special roll. sushi: All the items were packed dense with rice that tend to be on the drier side. the tuna roll had a weird metallic taste to it. It needed soy sauce whether you like it or not to moisten up the texture a bit. ramen: My tonkotsu ramen was milky white but as soon as I taste it I can tell this was the store bought ramen packets from the refrigerator section. The egg was overcooked. you can see the green ring around the yolk. It also only came with 1 stingy slice of pork. My friend’s Miso ramen was even worse. it wasn’t cloudy like Miso was supposed to be. it was a clear brown colored. I tried his broth and there was hardly any flavor in there. it was… mainly water. That got me mad — how can you mess Miso up? even if it’s from a packet, take some pride in the food you cook and adjust the flavor. Don’t just dump all the contents into a bowl and add hot water. and it’s not even the right amount of water. They diluted the shit out of that ramen. The waiter came over and asked if everything was okay. It was late in the night, and they were closing so I didn’t want to give any fuss. There wasn’t anything he could do at this point anyway. I just wanted to pay and leave. Definitely not coming back to a place where I can make all of that food better than they can. There was no heart and soul in that food. I would give it 1 star but the waiter works really hard and tries his best to please the patrons.

My friend forced me to come with her late at night because she was starving. We came in and were immediately seated. We quickly ordered water and then the waiter vanished. The waiter didn’t come for a good 15 minutes after to take our orders. There was not even a rush at the restaurant that it would even be acceptable to be this late in taking down orders. We ordered three rolls. And the wait time was absolutely ridiculous. We waited an additional 20 minutes for out food. When we got our food it tasted awful. I have never had such bad sushi in my life. Definitely do not come here. Even though it may be a bit cheap, the price isn’t worth the food or service.
