My meal was very bland. Definitely lacked flavor so slat and pepper was a must! I do appreciate how fresh everything tastes despite the lack of seasoning. The smoothie I ordered I believe was called the Hulk and I did not particularly enjoy the peanut butter. It did not mix well with everything else and had a old peanut butter after taste every time I sipped. I have heard great things about the waffles so maybe next time I will try their waffles! The décor is very clean and simple which I like and the staff is very nice.

I love the atmosphere and feel of this place! After reading the reviews I was hesitant about the customer service but wanted to try the coffee and food. I visited M/M on three separate occasions and enjoyed it each time. The first time I had the smoked salmon bagel, which was pretty good, but the bagel was rock hard. I ended up eating just the Salmon and other toppings on the bagel; however I highly recommend the iced began mocha! Today I went back for the last time before heading back home and had the salted caramel waffle. It was absolutely the best waffle ever! Overall, I had excellent experiences each time. The customer service varies but all the employees were friendly. Sometimes I felt rushed when ordering because they were busy, which is expected. It really just depends on what time you go.

Great breakfast! We ordered the crispy rolls waffles and potatoes. Everything was great — good portions and waffles were fresh made in front of us

Stopped by for breakfast while in town for a job. Salmon toast was served with a piece of plastic sticking out. I got the fruit waffle instead and the manager handed me a full unsolicited cash refund. Good service. The waffle was alright, pretty soft, no more exciting than your standard diner«Belgian» waffle. Coffee was decent. Menu is huge, confused, and confusing. They’re trying to do the French side of Belgian plus standard Brunch fare, waffles, and juice. I hope I never have to go back to New Haven but if I do, I’d go to a diner for breakfast instead of this annoying place.

I throughly enjoyed myself. Was able to sit back, do work while indulging in a good cup of coffee and a delicious sandwich(smoked salmon bagel). Cool vibe and super clean.

The food here is really good every time. I love the waffles, sandwiches and all of their specialty food and drinks. Great spot for juice and coffee. Every time I come here, however, the workers seem miserable and barely say a word to you. If you like good food and can deal with terrible customer service, this place will be a favorite.

What an adorable New Haven nook! Loved my Belgian chocolate mocha latte– seriously one of the best coffee drinks I’ve ever had. My waffle was beautiful but didn’t taste any better then waffles I’ve had at other places. I will definitely be returning to explore the rest of the menu!

Maison Mathis is fast becoming my favorite café in New Haven. It has a great location, good ambiance and a varied collection of items from breakfast, to sandwiches, to crepes, bakery items, juices, tea and coffee. The place is spacious, but can get crowded, specially by the Yale students who bring their«Apple products» to hang out at the café and some just stay there for an extended period of time :-) The food itself is good, more on the light side as most French cuisines are. Their bakery products are specially good. Definitely a good place to hang out and enjoy the crowd coming in and out

Customer service is HORRIBLE. I felt like I was being punished for not leaving a tip. The reason why I didn’t leave a tip was the unfriendly face at the cash register. This same person was rude to me the day before when I was in for brunch. Therefore I decided not to give a tip. Although I was first in line everyone after me(even with the same order) took their order before me. I didn’t miss my name being called out because I was standing right there as I was In a hurry to get my drink and leave for a meeting. In all honesty the food here is great and I have many beautiful memories here with family and friends. I really wish the management does something about the staffs friendliness. It really goes a long way.

I don’t know why this is only 3.5 stars. Really. It’s good. The environment is cool. The food is always fresh. The options are endless. The décor is so clean and inviting. The waffles are crazy good. With that chocolate sauce. Whoa. It’s great.

Going to Maison Mathis on Sundays has been a weekly tradition for my husband and I since its conception. I assure you — the line has never been short when ordering an awesome Belgium waffle(or my favorite Good Morning Wrap); but it NEVER takes more than a few moments to get through the maze of de-caffeinated customers and right to my plate. All of the staff go above and beyond to ensure that your experience is enjoyable, delicious and efficient. Whether you’re staying the afternoon to do work like my husband, or in and out for a quick Sunday breakfast, MM has never let us down. And believe me, we like to judge. MM

I don’t know what it is about his place, maybe the fact that I truly want to love them SO much that because they have repeatedly underwhelmed me I feel compelled to give them even 3 stars. Truly they should get 2, but maybe I’ll throw an extra one for the chic décor and floor tiles. Let’s start off by saying I am rating hem based on two encounters ~6mo apart. The first one was so horrifying I didn’t even want to write a review because I assumed it was just a fluke for them. But after today I realize this is the norm. First, there are menus… EVERYWHERE. This place is not for the faint of heart/non-locals. But in their defense they have a lot of variety. But it’s slightly chaotic to the new comer. For example, they have fresh juice that if you don’t notice the second you walk in. You missed it. Then they have a little deli with cut up fruit to buy, then pastries, then bread loafs, then they have a plethora of breakfast, lunch, dinner sandwiches, wraps, salads, and an espresso bar. Now, let’s see you were looking for that epic Belgian waffle you’ve been reading about well that is on a different menu ~15ft to the left of the main menu and you may strain your neck reading it. Don’t expect the workers to help you… They won’t. Bringing me to my next point, the workers look COMPLETELY miserable. As if someone killed their puppy back home. First the blonde/light hair girl working the bar this Saturday — she’s got to go. She was my barista last time too. I remember because even 6mo I thought the same thing. She is beyond rude, can’t make a drink to save her life. I straight ordered a cappuccino then took 1 sip(mind you after 25 min of waiting for it) and realized, OFCOURSE it wasn’t non-fat milk. After seeing it took me so long to get my first drink I wasn’t about to wait for a second one. So I came back in line and paid another $ 2.35 for a black cup of coffee. This was better! But then was the wait. Usually I’m a pretty patient person. I understand things are made fresh and I appreciate that. But come on… From the time I ordered to the time I got my 1 waffle(with no special substitutions might I add) was 48 minutes. Get real people. I won’t wait to 48 minutes for a anything! That’s nothing the guy next to me ordered a side of egg with his waffle. The egg came before my first coffee and then the waffle showed up same time as mine. God forbid the man eat a dang hot egg for his breakfast! Rude staff, terrible baristas, overwhelming menu, mediocre food… Believe me I’m done giving them chances. Bye Felicia!

I really like this place. I think you have to go at the *right time* and order the *right thing* to have a good experience, but overall it’s cute and the food is good. When I moved to the area about a year ago, I noticed this place on Unilocal. The reviews were mixed, perhaps even leaning negative… at least the ones that stuck with me about really bad-tasting, overpriced smoothies or some such thing. I had stayed away to avoid the mediocre over-priced food, until someone in my office suggested going there for lunch several months ago. I asked some of my colleagues if they had been before and what they recommended, and the answer was always the crispy egg rolls. And yes, that is what you should get here. Essentially an egg sandwich on some really good bread(brioche roll, perhaps?). I opt for the egg, cheese, and sausage crispy roll. It’s really big and filling, and comes with a side salad with really great balsamic. I think it comes out to a little over $ 5 which is FAR from being overpriced for what you get. I think it’s maybe the most reasonable lunch/brunch option in the area, and it never disappoints — after having this more than a few times, I can attest to the consistency. I also tried a tofu scramble once that was pretty good too — very filling, large portion. The baked goods are good, pretty average. I still need to try the waffles! I had a cappuccino here the other day and it was really good. I always make fun of coffee in New Haven as being bland, but this place really rocks on the caffeine front. Maison Mathis can be very crowded at the times you’d expect it to be crowded. The best times have been in the summer and during school breaks… otherwise it’s sort of overrun with yuppie students and laptops and it’s kind of a drag.

This has been my new go-to study/work spot in New Haven for a couple months now, and I love it here! Big windows allow for tons of natural light, the décor is pretty & relaxing and there’s tons of seating. Everything I’ve ever had to eat has been delicious, fresh and fairly priced. There have been a couple instances where I was brought the wrong food, but to be fair it has always been on days when they are packed. With free wifi, outlets, fresh juices, kick ass coffee, pastries and even a small selection of beer & wine, this place is perfect for a small casual gathering or a day of studying.

I love the coffee and the expanses of windows that let in light and frame beautiful views. The coffee is good, I don’t know where it was sourced, who the roaster is, or any crazy intricate detail that makes coffee great — but just know that it’s good. Ample space. Perfect for doing work, reading a few chapters or catching up with a good friend. Gets packed on weekends(great for people watching), so come during off hours to enjoy some peace and quiet. Breakfast is served all day long, and the eggs are local(Soeffer Farm, Branford) Breakfast sandwiches, soups, salads, omelettes, corques, pastries — huge menu. Haven’t tried much outside of an ecalir, but the pricing on everything seems reasonable. As with most places in New Haven, street parking is tough(metered parking runs up until 9pm but free on Sundays!)

This is a great coffee spot/café to grab a drink, snack, and settle in to do some work. There’s tons of table space so you don’t have to worry about finding a seat. The atmosphere is definitely not as cozy as other coffee spots, but it’s light, open, and modern-vibe are good for an early afternoon coffee. And the huge windows make it a bright place to do some reading and people watching. The coffee was delicious and they have tons of options to choose from(including soy or almond milk). The lunch menu was quite pricey for a café, so I went for a small snack instead. The vegan chocolate bread definitely hit the spot! Also, the sandwiches and breads are 50% off after 7PM. So be sure to ask about that if you’re in for a late night snack! Overall, an ideal place to settle in and do some work. It’s definitely more on the pricey side for a coffee shop, but worth it if you want to treat yourself to a nice working lunch.

I love the ambiance of this place. Who doesn’t enjoy tiny doodles swirled into the top of their latte? The food tastes fresh and is made quickly. A perfect spot to go alone and settle down at a table next to the window and people watch or bring some work to do with you. I like that you go up and order and sit down as opposed to being waited on . The smoothies are very tasty and you can watch them being made with fresh fruit right in front of you. I had the bacon egg and cheese sandwich with the freshest, crispiest roll I have ever had. And it even came with a nice little side salad . This place is definitely one of my new favorites!

3.5 stars. For what it offers, this place is a tad bit unreasonably pricey. I’ve never really had a bad experience per se here though, so overall it’s an okay spot to grab a quick bite/coffee or do some work. In terms of the food, I am a fan of the Belgian waffles and pastries(especially the eclairs). The waffles are quite large, delicate, and fluffy/crunchy at the same time. The drinks are nothing too special and somewhat expensive for no apparent reason. They have an okay selection of coffees/teas along with some other random items. Usually noise volume here is pretty average and there’s a good amount of space. A classier go-to spot on campus but nothing too special.

At Maison Mathis, you have sunlight, space, outlets, nice décor and an open atmosphere. This is one of my favorite places to work in New Haven, if only because of the many tables available and the bustling but not crowded space. The menu for both drinks and food is impressive, spanning hot drinks, smoothies, delicious deserts from the counter and a large menu of hot meals. The deserts really are incredible so find something you like and enjoy. The smoothies are a little hit and miss, and are on the expensive side, so you might want to give these a miss unless you feel lucky. The one downside here is the service. Even if you’re ordering something simple, they tend to forget or get something wrong a lot. As an example, I just ordered a cappuccino and one of the deserts on display. I got my cappuccino after a minute but my desert never came. Some of the register staff don’t seem to pass on orders to the rest of the staff. The well built gentleman with the beard is particularly bad at this. — I saw him process my card and then fail to mention the desert to anyone before asking the next person for their order. This should be easy thing to fix as it’s the only weakness of an otherwise perfect establishment.
