I have been going to Elm City Wellness since April, 2014. The Classroom opened in May, and I started to attend classes in June. I have been to fitness, adult yoga, and restorative yoga classes, which I will review individually below. Everything about ECW has been amazing — the classroom included. In short — the classes are small, personalized, and very effective. I wish I could give it 10 stars. ECW offers two packages for the classes — $ 99/month for unlimited fitness or yoga classes, or $ 149/month for unlimited fitness and yoga. The price is competitive compared to other studios in town, although the number of classes offered each week is limited. The classes are all geared toward wellness and personal goals. People looking for yoga studios that offer specific types of yoga or different difficulties may want to look elsewhere. People who want personalized attention or classes built on the experience and goals of the participants would find exactly that at ECW. There are classes specifically for children on Saturdays, to get kids in tune with their bodies and health. Fitness: I have been to two evening fitness classes before writing this review. The teacher, Marannie, is exceptional — she uses her knowledge of physiology to adapt the class to the needs of each student. At the beginning of each class, Marannie leads the participants through a series of movements to 1. asses the abilities of each student and 2. determine what exercises each student should do during the rest of the class to improve different areas(core, legs, etc.). After the assessment, Marannie leads each student through a circuit of exercises based on what areas each student needs to work on. Because of the small class size, she can give attention to everyone, making adjustments if needed and providing encouragement while pushing us to work as hard as we are able. Although the classes are only 30 minutes long, I feel very worked by the end! Marannie is very knowledgeable, encouraging, and fun. Adult Yoga: Melissa, the instructor, is wonderful. The class she teaches is not based on any one type of yoga. Instead, she draws from multiple traditions for a class that is dynamic and attuned to the needs of the students. Before beginning, she asks the students if there is anything they would like to work on — stiff shoulders, tight hips, or even just stress from a long day. I need modifications with certain positions due to knee and shoulder issues, and she makes sure to help me with them. I have really enjoyed the classes, and leave feeling rested and more centered in mind and body. Restorative Yoga: I had never heard of a restorative yoga class before ECW. The class is designed to help calm mind and body and restore balance. One hour of restorative yoga can be equally as refreshing as several hours of sleep. The hour long class is gentle, and does not focus on movement. Instead, we go through a series of positions that are held for several minutes as we focus on breath. It is incredibly relaxing and renewing. It is taught on Monday evenings and really helps prepare you for the rest of the week!
