212 Fukumatsu

Squab and I came to 212 Fukumatsu to try their sushi. It was decent. What stood out more was their ramen.
I agree that their special ramen is better than one would expect! They don’t have a selection, so you have to take what is offered. They rotate their broth flavors.
If you’re in Midtown East, it’s worth trying 212 Fukumatsu’s ramen.

I came here for a quick bite on a Saturday night, not expecting much. As Todd N. mentioned, they don’t tout their ramen here, but it’s surprisingly good! It’s no Santouka, but it’s better than the random ramen at any other non-​ramen Japanese restaurant.
I also tried the sushi and some other random appetizers, and all were acceptable. Select sushi is 50% off on Saturdays! The bill came out to very reasonable for the amount of food we got. I’d definitely come back for a casual bite, but this place isn’t anything super special.

First of all, who are you guys trying to kid in terms of FRESHNESS & FLAVOR? Sure it’s a good value here, but it’s not GOOD. Their saving grace is their sushi rice, if anything. I heard they jacked up the prices recently. It’s a miracle they are still in biz. I saw a sign that says 50% off sushi M-​F 5pm-​9pm. If you want watery sushi on the cheap, then go here. If you want quality, look elsewhere (like on my Orgasmic Sushi list).
–Chirashi ($ 15) — cooked shrimp, unagi, salmon, tuna, tamago, ikura, mackarel, yellowtail, fluke, white tuna, surf clam over a bed of rice.

This is a really easy to get to location and actually has Japanese people making and serving the food.
They have early bird specials from 5:30−7pm: a bento box, sushi rolls, etc. I ordered the Mixed Tempura bento box. It came with soup, salad, the mixed tempura and a California roll.
Another friend ordered their giant Fukumatsu box and got the eel and sashimi. Two full strips of eel and plenty of sides. Tempura, sashimi, with soup and salad. Also some hijiki salad. Also came with ice cream for dessert. All for $ 23.
I would not say it’s cheap, but for NY, it’s pretty good.
Hopefully I’ll go back on Saturday when it’s half price (and the fish is probably a week old).

I just adore this place — and when I live in NYC I ate here several times per week for lunch (the special, of course, is a great meal — but the sushi and chirshi and fresh and delectable.) They treated me well as a «regular».
The chef makes his own tamago and seasons the Ikura (salmon roe) which is swimmingly fresh.
There is no hype — like at nobu — and no «scary factor» like at cheap sushi joints, but Fukumatsu is the real deal.
Try the Alex Roll — filled with fresh tuna and crunchy goodness.
Oh I miss it so much I could cry.

My Japanese friend took me here on a Saturday (when they have half price sushi) and it’s the best sushi I’ve had outside of Japan. Highly recommended!

This is one of the best Japanese restauarants around the area. I usually go here for lunch and always get the chicken teriyaki lunch box, which comes with abundant amt of food (two types of soup, salad, rolls, chicken teriyaki).
I would recommend for the lunch hours, get there about 12:30 or after 1:45sh. It is always crowded, I remember eating at the counter one time because of no free space at the tables).

This is perhaps another 3.5-er that is bumped up to a 4 just because… The food is solid — with the fish always tasting fresh; never an issue with what I’ve been served. I’ve had the katsu don and sushi here. All solid.
They have some decent lunch specials, but they are all in the 2-​digits ($ 12 and up) price-​wise. On the upside, the specials all have plenty of food with variety (the boxes come with 3 pieces california roll, 3 pieces tuna roll, 5 pieces of tempura, little cup of soba, salad, and miso in addition to the feature, whether it be sushi, sashimi, teriyaki, etc.).
The service is generally good, but sometimes a server will be hard to locate. The place is always busy with midtown work types, and you’ll find other Japanese folks frequenting it.
Overall a solid place, but a tad pricey.
