Love this place. Old school, no frills. Great food and service. Wish I lived closer! I would totally be a regular. I’ve had the French toast and the potatoes and both are delicious. And the butter is served soft rather than rock hard from the fridge, which is small but nice.

A lot of variety and the people working here are great! However the food was bland. Not sure why but it was not the best I had. It lacked salt and spice. I would however go back if I wanted soup they had a huge selection of daily soups.

A staple of the neighborhood. I lived around here 5 years and they were a regular go-to. Fresh, tasty, affordable. No frills, a little cramped seating, best for take out.

Fast service. One of the only places that I’ve ever been that offers vegetarian matzoh ball soup. As a Jewish boy who grew up with matzoh ball soup yet is now I vegetarian, I had yet to find a vegetarian matzoh ball soup till I came to B and H. This was heaven! I especially enjoyed their Challa bread that came with a brush of mayo. Their omelette was good, but make sure to ask for cheese if it isn’t listed in the ingredients. Home fries were very well seasoned but a little too soggy for my tastes.

I probably didn’t get the most quintessential b&h order, I got barley soup and salmon cakes, the were ok but the stuff I saw other people getting looked better.

The coffee was pretty good– the omelette was overdone and the home-fries were dry(no doubt from being on the grill since before we arrived. The Challah bread was decent. I don’t see the appeal for breakfast here. Maybe I will try the blitzes next time(if there is one)

A great place to overload on carbs and not feel bad about it. An ideal start to the day would be some of their bread, pierogi(loved the one with cream cheese one) and soup. Their selection of soups are great too. Above however is ideal, if you are a potatohead, go for the potato pierogi, potato pancake and a home style potato with a side of whatever else there is and you cant go wrong…

Great old school neighborhood breakfast counter done right. Stopped in for breakfast but it looks good for lunch and dinner too. If you’re in the East Village looking for a neighborhood staple, give it a shot.

I have never felt more«at home» in a restaurant. The owner and cook welcomed us at the door and chatted with us during the meal. Look out of the stacks of fresh challah which will make you weak in the knees. The place itself is tiny so be prepared to squeeze, especially on your way out because you will be filled to the brim with food. So glad they made it back after the terrible explosion and hope they can continue to make people’s stomachs happy for years to come. Cash only :)

B&H is a tiny but cozy and friendly hole in the wall with a defiantly old school décor and menu. When you step into this place you feel immediately transported into another era long before the East Village became hip and trendy. B&H serves that old time kosher Jewish dairy cuisine — i.e. blintzes, pierogi, vegetable cutlets, etc — that is extremely hard to find these days. The challah bread — which appears to be baked onsite — is excellent. The portions are large and the prices are very reasonable. B&H is a treat!

This very old school hole-in-the-wall diner definitely has some personality. It’s local, classic, and has it a very cute charm that I fell in love with. It’s crazy during brunch time with the workers literally yelling at the tables a few feet away from them and passing their plates across the restaurant. Yet, I found that people were still really enjoying themselves and having a nice time in this small establishment. Also, it’s so cheap! Everyones super friendly and just a great environment if you’re looking for a very casual setting. Definitely visiting again for a good breakfast!

Cheap delicious breakfast. Challah bread and BnH omelet are amazing. Sit on the bar, strike a conversation with the chatty server/cook or someone next to you. Perfect start for many of my mornings.

Thanks to their specials/composed platters I was able to taste many different things, and it was all delicious and comforting(I had matzo ball soup with challah bread, pierogis, potato pancakes, and stuffed cabbage). They make you feel like at home!!! I’ll be back for sure(to try something different), next time on the East Coast. Thank you, guys!

Tonight, I enjoyed borscht, latkes, and challah bread, just like my grandma never made. They say that B&H is the oldest vegetarian restaurant in the USA. Located only a few doors down from where those buildings exploded in March 2015, B&H had to remain closed for months while city inspectors made sure their building was still structurally safe. Now that they’re re-opened, they deserve the support of everyone, because they are great. The dinner specials are very satisfying: a «cup» of soup, which would be called a bowl anywhere else, then potato pancakes, or pierogies, or a whitefish salad sandwich, whatever, mostly under $ 15, and comes with some nice fresh challah bread. The space is very narrow: you can either sit at the counter, or at one of the few 2-top tables against the wall. I think if you sit at a table, though, everyone going in and out will bump you. Like I say, it’s really narrow. I recommend you sit at the counter, and enjoy.

Yikes. The hot Borscht and bread were excellent, but the mushroom barley soup and the matzoh ball soup were mediocre and salty. The pierogies were a disaster. I’ve had better from a freezer case, which is probably where these came from. Eminently forgettable.

I had to give B&H a visit when I was in town. This little restaurant/deli is a real lower east side gem as far as I’m concerned. It’s a tiny little place that makes alot of from scratch soups which I’m a big fan of, the vegetable is one of my favorites. They also serve a variety of sandwiches, fresh made juices and some Eastern European shit like perogies and borscht, but beware if your a meat eater because this place is a vegetarian joint. There homemade bread is fantastic give it a try, and countless other foods also! The place is clean and the staff is friendly, the prices are cheap. If your a breakfast eater I would recommend, delicious, cheap and fast.

Maybe the best blintzes in NYC. This place has changed in years, lots of kosher/veg options but really the stand out item are the blintzes!!! So tasty, heavy and perfect!

Heaven is a grilled cheese and tomato on challah from B&H. Also some top notch pierogi and blintzes. Awesome hearty soups, the hot borscht is sooo good!.. Yummy daily specials. No meat in this joint cause it’s a kosher dairy restaurant so it’s vegetarian/vegan heaven. The challah bread is to die for — so fluffy and sweet. A relic of the old hood it hasn’t changed in the 20+ yrs I’ve been going there. So glad it wasn’t taken out in the 2nd ave building collapse. Belly up to the counter, grab a stool and have yo-self some serious comfort food, you won’t miss the meat if you are a carnivore, trust me ;-).

I probably walked past B&H handful of times over the years without realizing, but it was only recently that a friend mentioned this spot. We made it imperative to visit for one reason: their grilled cheese and egg sandwich. This unsuspecting, tiny old school diner spot sitting in the heart of St. Mark’s, offers a(mostly) vegetarian menu(a variety of fish options are available). It is a simple, no frills, budget friendly eatery. Daily specials are available along with the everyday items. The wonderful grilled cheese sandwich; you can have it for any time of the day, whether it be breakfast, lunch or dinner. Trust me that on your first visit, you will want to order the grilled cheese sandwich with eggs sunny side up or over easy(if you like your eggs runny, but who doesn’t). You will not see this item listed as so on the menu, but they will make this if requested. A side of soup is also a nice consideration, and we did opt for an order of the split pea soup. They also give a sufficient amount of soft bread on the side, lightly slathered with butter, but it is a hearty amount. Save room for that sandwich though. This is a great classic item to be had from here — nicely toasted, thicker slices of bread lightly buttered, with flavorful melted american cheese, fried yet runny yolk eggs to fill in between. Probably one of the best grilled cheese sandwiches I have eaten. I would have to say that aside from the amazing egg and cheese, it is really about the bread. The split pea soup was also pretty great and made the meal feel complete. While there are plenty of other great options available off the menu, my reason for return is for the grilled cheese. Though, their mac and cheese also sounds very appealing. It is always places like these, small and unsuspecting spots, that provide some of the best(cheap) food in the city. If ever in the St. Mark’s area and wanting to consider a slightly different option from the mix of mostly yakitori or ramen spots around there, I would give B&H a go if simple, classic diner food that is vegetarian friendly sounds appealing to you.

A standard counter-top lunch place that gets it right. Nothing fancy, food is great, and service is friendly, quick, and courteous. Should be a mainstay in the East Village for a very long time. Vegetarian friendly menu. I had the Vegetarian Chili over Brown rice. It was good — just standard, solid chili. But what made the meal great was the Challah bread that came with the meal. I could eat a whole loaf. Portions are large for their prices — well worth the visit.

The portions are so «small.» The staff is so soft spoken as they ask what you want, let alone as they whisper across the place to let the other stations know what you want. You go for the over filled plates, with a staff that is always yelling and the steam warmer and soups are always hot. Most dishes are made to order with some of the kitchen gear that appears to date to the opening of the place in 1942.

Can’t say I know too much about Jewish diner food. I mentioned I wanted to try pierogis to my friend and said Ive only tried Veselka’s. My friend almost went into circulatory shock by my mentioning I actually believed Veselka’s could be categorized as actual pierogis. Cue checking out B & H Diary for some actual pierogis. They’re pierogis are HUGE. You might think the 4 pierogi serving size might not be enough but trust me it is enough. Im also not a fan of sour cream usually but theirs was excellent. I tried the fried potato pierogies. Served with sour cream and onions. Really solid. My friend recommends the cheese ones. The challah bread with the butter they use is so yummy. Only 1.25 $ for two thick slices. Tried their cherry blintzes. They were good but I felt a little dry, they could have used some extra sauce. Keep in mind this is the first time Im trying this food. Also, this is a diner + no ventilation= you will come out smelling like whatever they’re frying. Cash only! Decent prices for a lot of food. A lot of vegetarian options.

Oy. I am a sucker for Jewish diners, especially the dairy ones. On a long day date with my buddy, we started here with a late breakfast/early lunch. I had the grilled cheese and the pea soup, and they were both perfect. Nice and melty greased up grilled cheese and salty perfection in a bowl. Obviously this pea soup was kosher, but it still had a nice bite to it like it had some ham broth. If dated, narrow diners turn you on, shimmy in here for a cheap lunch. You won’t be disappointed.
