It is what it is — a pub that specializes in drinking but decided to throw food into the mix. If you’re drinking soda, be aware that there are no free refills. I was craving a coke so badly and slugged down 3 fills somehow(I promise I’m normally pretty healthy!) and was a little shocked to see the bill. I guess that will teach me self control.

Stopped in late on a Tuesday. Drinks were good and the food was also good — pretty standard fare for a pub. We somehow always end up at irish pubs when we visit nyc! The bartender was Irish(naturally) and friendly. Overall was okay — nothing that will win any Michelin awards but we weren’t expecting that!

Great midtown bar. Great selection of beers always. Been for lunch a few times, never left waiting for service. They get that you have less than a hour. Love there happy hour also. Keep up the good work guys.

Great food. I eat lunch here every week. They are very accommodating for dietary concerns. the Blackwell burger and chicken nachos are my favorites. I always get great quick service.

Decent bar tucked away off the major streets. The rating is more for the bar staff than anything else. The beer was cold, and the fish and chips were alright. I was sitting at the bar in town for work and I felt welcomed and it seemed like the bartender was able to chat about any topic my mind wandered to.

Came on a Friday night to watch a hockey game. Very friendly bartenders — Johnny and David — switched the channel for us immediately. Mac and cheese was delicious, burgers also good. Low key, easy to have a conversation. Will definitely be back.

Blackwell’s is a very generic Irish pub with a corporate atmosphere, average food, and the typical list of draft beers and liquor. The bright spot is that they have some of the most accommodating and friendly management and staff that I’ve ever met at a bar/restaurant in NYC. The interior is very traditional. If you’ve seen one Irish pub in NYC, you’ve seen them all. There is a dark wood everywhere and a very long bar that spans the whole wall. The clientele is very corporate, given its location in midtown and its proximity to most of the Midtown East hotels. The food is average, but better than most Irish pubs that I’ve tried. The best appetizer on the menu are the chicken nachos($ 10), which are surprisingly full of flavor. The chips are covered with a delicious cheese sauce that is thicker than most nachos at other restaurants. The steak sandwich($ 17) is also really good — the steak is juicy and is always cooked at exactly the temperature you ordered it. Everything else I’ve ordered has been rather bland. I’ve had several work events here, and the management and server staff have been oustandingly accommodating. Blackwell’s is one of the few bars in NYC that does not require a cost minimum when reserving the front bar section for happy hours. The manager herself will often stop by to check on things, and sometimes even clears empty glasses and plates for you when the table bussers are busy. Our group went through our drinks quickly, and the servers always cheerfully kept our glasses full despite the big after-work crowds. If you’re getting off of work on a weekday and are looking for a traditional place to pass the time, this is the place. If you’re hosting a corporate event with a tight budget, consider this place and you will not regret it. However, if you’re looking for any sort of unique experience or above average food, look elsewhere.

Fantastic bar. Spacious and good pub menu. Best part, Johnny the bartender. A bar is as good as it’s bartender and Johnny is awesome. Took great care of us. Great time had by all. Going to find an opportunity to get back to this place.

Perhaps it was the build-up, but I was led to believe this was better than all of the other Irish pub-restaurants in the area. It’s pretty standard. Went with some office chums for a lunch. The onion soup was lackluster, a small croûton, flavorless cheese(sure as hell wasn’t good gruyère), pretty average broth. I fared better with the fish and chips. Two nice pieces of fish, lightly battered and very tasty. The fries could have been cooked a bit longer, but they were greaseless and fresh. Decent glass of white wine. Can’t take pints at lunch anymore. Service was quick and friendly.

Food has no flavor. It’s a nice bar if you want to sit and have a drink but just don’t waste your money ordering anything. Not sure how you make bland potato skins but they managed. Good bartender if you are just looking for a drink.

My first and last time there. Ordered a shepherds pie and had some serious food poisoning that night. It was not a good sight. My friends ordered other items but they were fine.

This was a great experience — I needed a quick meal at 9 pm at night — nothing fancy — and they had tables not just bar seats. Waitresses were very good. Had the French onion soup and the bacon cheese burger with sweet potato fries. Very good and served quickly. Decent pricing. I will be back.

I used to spend a bit of time here when I worked upstairs, although it was under another name… the quality is still the same — all good. Cosy, correct lighting, friendly staff who always make you feel like you’ve rocked up into their living rooms instead of the local boozer in Midtown East. I like stopping in here because one drink inevitably turns into a couple hours or more(especially with mates). I’ve only eaten here once for lunch & it was yummy. The V&T’s are potent and the place is overall welcoming. This is a solid bar & I’ll always stop in for a session.

In this stretch of town around the 50s and Lex, there’s a strange black hole area lacking bars when just a couple of aves over there’s a large assortment. Blackwells fills in that gap with a decent low key pub, where you can easily go to enjoy a pint along with your favorite sports. There’s ample space for sitting down as there is for just hanging out at the bar. The staff are friendly and the prices extremely reasonable.

Blackwells wasn’t terrible. The service was very good. The waitress was very attentive and even listed almost all of their tap beers for me(which was quite a few). In fact, all of the servers seemed good here. Which is why I can’t give it one or two stars. The music was good :) just loud enough to enjoy but you could also talk over it. However, I was a little disappointed they didn’t have any specials — food nor drink. I miss the connollys that was in this location, with their daily beer specials. I was a little annoyed that I ordered the $ 14 steakhouse burger from blackwells, and it didn’t even include cheese. Seriously? I guess I’m bad at reading the menu but I didn’t realize it didn’t have cheese. The food was okay overall, but nothing special. My boyfriend didn’t really enjoy the chicken panini. I guess I’m just miffed I didn’t get my cheeseburger :( Prices for drinks are high and food prices are high. Meh. 3 stars!
