I’ve been going to Figureworks for ages. My favorite thing about the gallery is that, although I have been to many shows, I never know quite what to expect. One time I walked in and the gallery had been transformed into a shrine to Michael Jackson, complete with worshippers. Whoa. The current show features every kind of doll you can imagine, from creepy to cute to – Oprah. The openings are always lively and fun, and the location is super convenient, just a couple minutes from the Bedford stop on the L. Worth checking out!

Figureworks is a vital stop on any tour of Williamsburg. Not only is it the only gallery in the area that focuses exclusively on art of the human figure, but it is also ever-changing in terms of it’s roster of artists and the types of presentations. Shows vary widely, but are always consistent in vision and excellence. The gallery director is easy going and well informed. Don’t miss it!

Interesting mix of figure-based art by different artists with different materials. Very friendly people.

I liked how these guys were celebrating the art crawl tonight. They had a projector outside the space, pointing at a tree, somehow rigged to show stars slowly climbing down the branches, and the trunk of the tree all the way to the ground. It was an impressive feat. The space itself is in an old three-story williamsburg apartment building, where you enter through the ground floor doorway, to the second floor which houses the gallery. There are offices in the back, and then two small cute rooms in the front showing the works. People are quite friendly, it’s as though you’re in someone’s living room.
