Matsu

Very disappointing. I usually order from the sushi roll lunch menu always enjoyed it. I think its under new ownership or management because the last few lunches have been terrible. Not fresh. I ordered the Dragon Roll to disguised the bad taste they drowned it with a brown sauce, the salmon spicy roll was not fresh at all and taste was bland. The rolls used to be a nice size portion now its half the size and cost more. I no longer recommend Matsu.

High quality sushi at a good price. I’ve ordered from this place for years and never been disappointed. My go to sushi place for sure.

Delicious sushi and miso soup! Their chicken teriyaki bento box is great as well! Very fresh and delicious!

I absolutely love this place. I order delivery from them at least once a week, and have also eaten in the restaurant many times. I think the reason why I like this place so much is it is because its just a sushi/​Japanese restaurant. Nothing fancy, prices are good, a perfect place to just get some good sushi.
Service is lovely — always very nice and attentive. Delivery service is great too. Food arrives fast and my order is always correct.
Food is so good! The sushi has always been fresh — even down to the avocado. I hate when sometimes avocado in sushi rolls isn’t ripe enough — never an issue with this place.

I love this place… Food is awesome… the service is always great, the people are really friendly… I always get the Spicy Girl roll that is unbelievably good… I mean off the charts. The salads, beef negimaki, soups… all good.

Simply terrible service. I ordered 5 pieces of sushis and was kept waiting for more than 30 minutes for them. The waiter later explained that it’s because that my friend’s unagi don was taking some time to cook. But for 30 minutes? Really? And how did this affect my sushi again? The whole time they just kept us waiting, or dare I say, totally ignored us. And when I asked for the check and my dessert, one waitress reacted as if I haven’t ordered it. And she asked the guy who took my order and it took them another 7 or 8 minutes to actually serve it. I mean, seriously? It’s only an ice cream! How long would it take? Just take it out of the fridge and put a cherry on and how long would that take? Like 30 seconds??? I mean, seriously, if you don’t have the capacity, don’t enter the industry! We left a 5% tip just because the food is okay. That’s it. If you are in a hurry or really hungry, just don’t go. Otherwise you’ll just be really pissed like us.

Consistently great sushi, fresh, and lots of choice. The service is always fantastic – they’re so nice, welcoming and attentive. Love this place!

Very nice service. We got the water eel, rainbow roll and sweet hear roll. They were all amazing. We got seconds of the eel roll. Can’t wait to come back!

Sushi here was okay, they get an extra star for fast delivery and in the rain too.
Ordered the tempura which was very crispy and flavorful, the veggies had a good crunch to it. Not too oily. The rolls we got were about what you would expect, the spicy salmon was pretty good and the two specialty rolls were okay, nothing special. I would probably order again for lunch delivery.

I order from this place at least once a week. When I’m with a friend I often take them here too. It’s delicious, fair priced, has great specials (lunch and happy hour) and they deliver in like 15 minutes.
I usually get the teriyaki (beef or chicken), miso, edamame, and gyoza.
My only recommendations is if you are doing take out ask for an extra teriyaki sauce. And I’ve found the chicken tempura is much better in the restaurant than ordered for home, but it’s still great. Also great udon.

2 pickup/​drop off yesterday. No issues, damage, or orders. Came quickly and was $ 38 for 2 BIG bags. Good deal.

There are many small mom and pop sushi joints on the upper west side and most of them are simply bad or mediocre at best. Entering Matsu, one feels the same ambiance inherent in many of the other unremarkable UWS sushi shops. The furniture is a tad threadbare and there is no décor of any substance. Of more concern was the fact that at 9pm on a Friday evening, there was only one occupied table. That’s usually a flashing danger sign. But, as the saying goes, you can’t judge a book by its cover.
We sat at a two-​top near the sushi bar. The kitchen staff and sushi chef seemed to be hard at work. By the time we ordered, it was apparent that they do a big volume takeout and pickup business as at least half a dozen orders had either gone out with the delivery team or had been picked up by neighborhood folks.
Staying on defense we ordered six of the «universal standard» sushi rolls and one house special Alligator roll along with a small carafe of cold house sake. The food came out quickly and it was a pleasant surprise. The fish tasted and smelled fresh and was not overly cold. The fish-​to-​rice ratio was robust; there was at least as much if not more fish than rice in each roll. The house special Alligator roll was impressive with ample fresh salmon inside and a generous portion of smoked eel on top. The house sake was well balanced and pleasantly crisp. My only nits would be that the spicy tuna roll was not spicy at all and the filling was chopped a bit more finely than I like – but that’s about all I found to crab about. And the best part was the tab; with tax and a 20% tip it was about $ 60.
I’d conclude that, for a modest neighborhood sushi joint, Matsu is solid. The value ratio here is quite high with an abundance of fish in the rolls. I’m giving them four stars because they are clearly better than three stars but if I could, I’d be at about three and a half. I will definitely make them a regular stop for sushi on the UWS.

Matsu is a great place to dine in or take out. They also offer fairly quick delivery options as well.
The food is delicious. The California roll and shumai are the best I’ve ever had. The atmosphere is Austere, but so is the culture so it’s fitting. I work very close by, so have had many experiences with the staff and food, both of which are delightful.

One of my favorites to have delivered home. They have an incredibly tasty salmon and tofu teriyaki meal that is served with miso soup. Pleasantly delivered!

I’ve only come in for lunch and I only order the sushi. Specifically the spicy tuna, spicy salmon, and yellowtail. Always fresh, and I love that there’s more fish than rice. Great price for sushi in the city.

Simple, inexpensive, mediocre sushi restaurant. Bare décor, no-​name wine list, and decent food. For $ 30 (including tip), I got two glasses of mystery wine, a spicy tuna roll, and and order of edamame, and was in and out in just shy of a half hour.
Not bad, not great… Just a-​ok.
