This was a favorite because of the fresh ingredients but now they charge a $ 1 fee for gluten free soy sauce. They also have white tuna on the menu which is not tuna at all and got me sick the last time I was tricked into thinking it was the lighter part of the fish. Don’t order it — tastes bad and can get you sick!

I’ve become a fan of this place — it’s small and quiet, and the food doesn’t disappoint. I also find that the prices are great relative to other Japanese places in the area. The only caveat is the waitstaff — some are pleasant and attentive, but others are brash and forget about you. I went last night and had to wait 15 minutes to receive my check and then get the check processed, and there were only 5 other tables full in the restaurant.

Have been coming to matsu for around ¾ years and never leave disappointed . The service is fast and friendly. The sushi and sashimi is always VERY fresh, tender and tasteful. It always amazes me how such a small place with very reasonable prices is able to provide such high grade fish. Highly recommend the tri color sashimi and the sushi and sashimi combination for two. Both great for the price and as mentioned before, the quality of the sushi is top of the line!

Ordered the large platter for pick up. Delicious sushi! We ordered the large platter over individual rolls since the price made sense. The platter was in the $ 70 range and was ready in under 30 minutes! The variety was great and included rolls I hadn’t tried before(banana/sweet potato, etc). REALLY delicious!

This restaurant is cozy and a bit romantic for couples and cool for hanging out with a group of friends. They sat us right next to a little religious statue which added a nice zen touch. From all the other Unilocalers I wanted to try the Year of 2014 roll. I guess my expectations were way too much, the presentation was beautiful, but it was too much different mixed stuff for our tastes. Neither me nor my hubby liked it that much. It just wasn’t our taste. The Spicy Salmon Salsa roll was excellent and I liked the fried outside very much, the spicy salmon and eel sauce on the bottom was different and we loved this roll! I was most impressed with the Chef selection Sashimi. Excellent selection, and very very fresh. I even had sea urchin and loved it! Impressive! I would go again!

Visited 2÷22÷2016 Stopped by for lunch after having my 1 year knee replacement checkup at HSS just around the corner. Didn’t really eat too much or ‘experiment with the choices”. We started off with the standard Miso soup… followed by My wife having a Naruto roll, while I had their Matsu roll and a yellowtail/scallion hand roll. Everything was very good… food and staff. Next time I’m in the area and feeling like some sushi, I’ll have no problem coming back here.

Can’t say enough about Matsu. It’s good sushi, and hey, it’s right across the street from my apartment building! Friendly staff, too. Small restaurant, so wouldn’t recommend bringing a big group here unless it’s empty. What to get: –lunch specials(perfect serving size for one person, only $ 9 – 10) –matsu roll(my favorite! lots of raw fish, and they put something delicious sauce in the rice. idk what it is) –year of 2014 roll –snappy roll –out of control roll –salmon teriyaki bento box Salmon’s my favorite sashimi, and it’s really good here.

Great little lunch place! I came here with my mom & son after a pediatrician visit on 72nd. I was pleasantly surprised. Great little ambiance, awesome food and LOVED the prices! Especially, it being tasty! My mom got the chicken teriyaki bento box and I got the two roll combo. Definitely will be coming back when in the area!

I recently moved to 70/1, unfortunately leaving all the great food establishments I became familiar with. With each door that closes, a new one opens. But I think Matsu should should keep their door shut. We sat at the sushi bar and saw a lot of great things being delivered to other customers but there is a lot more than meets the eye. Sushi was pretty disgusting. All of our rolls fell apart. My spicy tuna roll tasted like mushy baby food. New York roll seems somewhat exciting and different, and it was indeed different, different in a negative way. Overall unsatisfying experience. Onto the next.

I always go here once a week with my coworker for lunch and it gets really packed because it’s near the hospital and everyone goes there around 12 – 12:30 for lunch. I love their shrimp tempura and california roll. Before 4 they have a lunch specials which are filling and cheap! Their saki is okay… But I won’t buy it again though lol. I love their Thai ice tea! Hands down this is the great place to go if you want sushi!

As someone who works in the area, Matsu is definitely in my top 10. However, they can miss on rare occasions. The other day I ordered a salmon teriyaki lunch box to go. The salmon was delicious. The skin was crispy, the sauce was deep in flavor, the miso soup hit the spot, and the California roll was adequate. These I expect but I dig into the rice and find a mushy paste in the middle and was far too inedible to consume. I was very disappointed that they would let this type of quality pass to a customer but as I said they make mistakes quite rarely because they get tons of business and their food is quite good and fare priced.

I was in NYC for work and met up with a couple of awesome friends on the Upper East Side for dinner. They took me to their local sushi spot! Why they love this place: Simple. Good sushi. No wait. Affordable. Friendly staff I did learn the hard way that in NYC, you have to prepare ahead of time for dinner. You can’t expect to walk into a popular restaurant at 7:45pm and get a seat. So I appreciated that we were sat right away. Between the three of us, we ordered 5 rolls… Which ended up being a tad too much for us. The rolls were really good! Spider roll, caterpillar roll, 2015 roll,… Annnnnnd I don’t remember the other two. The 2015 roll was our least favorite… Not to mention it is in the shape of a taco. Hah! Anyway, I liked this place. If you are looking for a casual sushi spot, I’d come here.

Really packed and busy because of its proximity to the hospital. Nice hole in the wall sushi spot. Recommend but be aware there’s a wait for a table

Great lunch specials! Be prepared to wait during lunch because it’s definitely a poppin’ place. They do take phone orders, though! Matsu is reasonably priced and the sushi here is pretty good. There is a $ 10 credit card minimum, which is unfortunate because their lunch specials are right below that cutoff. One way to get around that is to preorder online via their website and pay using your credit card.

Good food, but had to wait 15 minutes even though I ordered and paid online and arrived just after the website asked me to. Might as well have walked in and ordered to go in person. This needs to be fixed. Perhaps phoning in will fare better.

Easy place to grab food before meandering around Central Park. Food is good, simple. Place is tiny, I mean I guess most places are in NYC. The place was packed with kids from the local school on their LUNCHBREAK. I was never as cool as a NY child, I will say that. The only thing was after the kids cleared out, it was dead, and there were quite a few staff just standing around. Overall great experience.

Tried Matsu Sushi for the first time for lunch. They have very affordable lunch specials and bento box options. They also have a specials list that gets updated daily. The restaurant is clean, the staff is friendly, and it appeared to be a hot spot in the area(especially how close it is to the hospital) The food was good, but just about average on par with any other cheap sushi place in the city. Will definitely be back in the future as it’s so close to home!

Matsu used to be a fave when I lived in the area and as I work in the area. Service is always good but take out tonight was a complete miss. The eddamame was warm soggy and had no salt. The shumai was somehow over cooked– over steamed? Is that possible? Rubbery texture. And the sushi rolls– fresh fish… Well that is I didn’t get any«down there«issues but the rice was stale– hard– yucky. Oh well. Goodbye and farewell Matsu. This 6 year love affair is over.

Very average sushi place. My coworkers order take-out from here all the time since it’s like right across the street. We usually order one of the lunch special deals and I usually get the 3 rolls+salad/soup for $ 11 which I find somewhat reasonable for Manhattan prices(you can definitely get better deals in Brooklyn! Shoutout to my home-borough!) The sushi rolls are alright. I’ve tried the Yellowtail, Salmon Avocado, Eel cucumber, and White tuna. My favorite is definitely the white tuna but I’ve had better white tuna at other sushi restaurants. This white tuna roll has a crunch to it that I like though! The other 3 were ok. Overall, I would continue to order the lunch specials here if I’m at work and am craving sushi but this is definitely not a place you should go out of your way just to try.

I came here to surprise my coworker for her bday and the bill added up so much! I ordered a rolls: Kampyo roll, Inari roll, Shiitake mushroom roll, Vegetable roll, Taro tempura roll, and the natto roll. All the rolls were good except the kampyo and natto. They were so gross that we had to split the rolls and suffer together. This was the first time I saw the taro tempura so that was an interesting switch to a tempura starch roll. We also ordered the yasai gyoza and the zaru soba which were very good. The zaru soba had a side of peanut sauce and the pair was very refreshing and light. I recommend ordering this. The gyoza was definitely lightly fried since only one side had a crisp. As for desserts, their menu has quite a selection. We ordered the green tea crêpe cake, which they get from Lady M, and the hazelnut truffle. The green tea crêpe cake was not fresh, the texture was very obvious; it came from the fridge. The hazelnut truffle was sweet from the caramel and the chocolate taste was strong. They were on top of their water service. The bathrooms are clean. There’s only one waitress and one host.
