I was in the area with a sushi craving and passed by Mottsu and figured I give it a shot. In hindsight, I should just stick to the places I know. Opted for a lunch special and got two rolls: spicy tuna and shrimp tempura. Underwhelming to say the least. You don’t get that many pieces per roll and, luckily, you can’t screw up a shrimp tempura roll so that was decent; however, the spicy tuna roll didn’t taste fresh. They also cut the tuna poorly, leaving tons of fat(white lines) in the roll which makes it a lot more chewy than it should. Service was slow as well for an empty dining room. Also, the sushi bar is oddly designed. You’d want the sushi bar at least at eye level for observation purposes. The sushi chefs with a minimal language barrier can also converse with guests and answer any questions. At Mottsu, you’re staring into marble and the sushi chefs kind of tower over you. Not really intuitive. I would overlook all of my gripes if the food was on par, but that wasn’t the case. Won’t be returning.

I ordered two different kind of sushi: coconut and east sushi. Also ordered chicken teriyaki. It was OK. Not tasty like other Japanese places. I can NOT give more than 4 stars for the food. But for waiter service 1 star is even a lot. They are 3 people but really slow. When it was time for pay they took like 10 – 15 mins to charge my card. I don’t think I’ll be back here ever again. Very slow service.

Came in for dinner with my family and a friend the other night. The tables were full but the friendly waiter enticed us to stay and wait by giving us hot Green tea. The wait wasn’t very long. The spacing of the tables and chairs is a bit crowded. I had a tonkotsu ramen. I must admit that I’ve had much better in Manila. But I particularly enjoyed the pork. The noodles were a bit undercooked. We also had an assorted sushi platter which tasted very fresh. I never got to try the SoHo roll. The rest of my party consumed it before I even attempted to get a piece. Must’ve been really good. The staff is very friendly and efficient.

This place truly is Japanese. You can feel it in the air. It is very low key almost unnoticeable. I really liked the set up is very intimate. The sushi is really good. I really liked it. Sushi bars close by are crowded and more expensive.

Came here with my collegue. We had crazy roll, samurai roll, and soho roll. Will definately come back, love Mottsu. Great food and great environment for calm and relaxing dinner. Love their crazy roll, it has mango inside, yum. Also, pile and pile of lollipop.

Was convinced to order from here by a friend and was less than excited because of the 3 star rating. I couldn’t have been more wrong. The rolls were some of the best I’ve tried in NYC. The must order is the soho roll, has a hint of truffle oil on top and is really amazing. Everything else is delicious too, all the rolls are well made and the fish is fresh. Will be back soon!

Came to MOTTSU for the first time today with my brother. I learned of this place because my sister have always wanted to try the sushi tacos here however, we came at noon and couldn’t pass up the lunch special offer. I ordered my usual Spicy Salmon, Spicy Tuna and we also ordered a Special Roll called ‘Giant Crispy Roll’ to share. My brother and I LOVED the special roll, which was lightly fried to perfection. I thought the regular rolls were good but not amazing… although the for the price, you can’t really complain! Service was great. We were checked up on regularly if everything was ok. Water and yummy FREE strong gen mai cha(roasted green tea) was refilled regularly as well!

Hit up this small joint in Soho on a Thursday afternoon around 130 or so. The lunch rush had just ended, and there were a handful of tables to choose from. Chose the table farthest from the door(as the wind gust of 20 below were chilling the place each time a patron entered or left). There are a handful of 5 stars, some 1 stars — a real mixed bag of reviews. Wasn’t sure what to expect. Overall, service was good. Food was fantastic. The dumplings were to die for here. I had the chicken teriyaki with miso soup and a California roll. All tasty as can be. The others had ramen and noodles. I sampled both, both on point. If you’re looking for some Asian and in Soho — highly recommend. To top it off, there was one of the Victoria Secret Angels having lunch 2 tables over from us. I guess that’s not too uncommon when you’re in Soho though. Peep it if you’re around the area.

Great find! My parents and I ate here with my parents before seeing a show at the Lynn Redgrave theater.(The play was a dud, but I digress.) We ordered a kani salad and 4 rolls: the love roll, the celebration(?) roll, a spicy salmon, and a salmon avocado. The fish was very fresh, and the portions were generous. The presentation and the service were great as well! Can’t wait to go back!

The spicy tuna roll is among the more flavorful I’ve ever had. The yellowtail roll is also yummy and fresh. It’s hard to beat a lunch deal like 15 $ for 3 rolls and a hardy bowl of miso soup. The service was also prompt without being overbearing. A great eating experience overall.

Ordered delivery for lunch today, they weren’t late and they weren’t early either. They were exactly on time, that’s pretty cool since my lunch break is only an hour. The miso soup taste very much like miso soup, it was a very small portion though it wasn’t even filled up halfway, they were probably rushing since it was lunch rush hour? No matter, I wasn’t feeling like drinking soup anyway, I took a sip and forgot it on my desk. I think I forgot to throw it out before I left today, now that I’m writing this review. I had a chiraishi thing, it’s like a deconstructed sushi nigiri. You have the fish, crab, egg, shrimp by itself and the sushi rice by itself. The rice was good, my favorite part. I can’t say much about the fish. Not sure about how fresh it was, but it wasn’t bad. Their egg wasn’t so good but I won’t judge a sushi restaurant by their egg omelettes. Even though it might not seem like a lot of food, I was satisfied since I wasn’t hungry anymore neither was my stomach bloated. Which is the perfect in-between. Their delivery is not fast or slow but exactly on time, deserved an extra star for that level of effort. I’ll go back and try you out another time mottsu

Great little place I wandered into while I was in the area. Wasn’t too packed for a Friday night but very busy regardless due to orders made on the phone. The wait staff was very attentive & kind & the sushi was delicious. I ordered from the specialty menu, a coconut shrimp mango, SOGOOD! It had some mango sauce along with eel such –which happens to be my favorite. Topped it off with a delicious ice cream tempura. Highly recommend because of the great service & scrumptious food.

Came for lunch with a party of four, was seated right away but the table was sticky — not the kind of sticky because someone spilled soda on it but the grease kind of sticky that doesn’t get wiped with water. Our napkins stuck to the table because of it. I dont know what was going on. The lunch menu is your typical japanese lunch — sushi options, rolls, teriyaki bentos, etc. Chicken udon: can’t really go wrong with this one, but I did wish there was vegetables in the udon other than just a couple mushroom slices. Yakisoba: my friend liked it just fine, no other comments Shushi lunch: typical sushi — not eye opening-ly fresh I’m not sure if I’d come to eat in person again, maybe i’ll order take out sometime, but there are other options around the area.

Extremely good sushi! I had the beef teriyaki bento box, which came with the beef(with onions), California roll(6 pcs), shrimp shumai, miso soup, and white rice. It was delicious! Would highly recommend! The service was wonderful too, they take care of their guests!

Falls under a 3.5 — 4.0 range. Went here for lunch with coworkers and was definitely pleasantly surprised. This restaurant is run by Chinese people so I wasn’t expecting their food to be authentic, but it’s actually quite good. I ordered the Una Don(eel) which was much larger than expected. The unagi was also quite sizable which made it even better. As a big eater, the size was definitely a bonus at Mottsu. In terms of flavor, the Una don was quite good, but it wasn’t excellent. Pretty customary sauces and for what it was worth, it was pretty good. Expect straight-up run of the mill Japanese food at Mottsu. Service was fantastic and prices were reasonable. Would return for a quick lunch.

I was pleasantly surprised by my lunch at Mottsu. I thought that all of the tiny, hole-in-the-wall, no-frills, inexpensive restaurants had been driven out of Soho… but it’s not true! We walked into Mottsu at noon with a group of 8, and we were seated right away. There weren’t many tables, but luckily, there was only one couple in the restaurant at that time. The menu was extensive, the service was speedy, the portions were big, and the food tasted like it was much more expensive than it was. They also got us in and out within the hour – perfect for work lunch! I will absolutely return – loved it!

Slow service and i just dont think it tasted very good or fresh. I have had much better. The sushi and sashimi platter for 50 had sushi pieces that tasted like boxed sushi.
