I like this neighborhood spot, but a bit disappointed on a recent take-out order: the portions much smaller than they used to be, and I had to pay more for a vegetable substitution. Go back to value AND favorites, folks. Your neighbors are counting on you!

I’ve been going to this place for years and only because it is conveniently close to home. This is why I stopped going a few years ago. They don’t change the menu, the food isn’t interesting and they don’t seem to care about the customer. So when finally the new tapas place across the street opened, I dropped them like a hot potato as there have been a couple of unfortunate incidents with the food. But then, some of my friends still frequent the place, so I have been reluctantly going back and most times, it just wasn’t a pleasant experience. Let’s blame myself for being a difficult eater. There aren’t many options in the menu I can have as I keep kosher. My only 2 options are the grilled salmon or the sushi and I’m perfectly okay with that. Three weeks ago, my friend and I went to Nextdoor, I ordered their grilled salmon. The potato onion tart was bland, the salmon had a strange taste and I gave it back. The bartender told me(mind you, I ate about a quarter of my dish) «You’re out of luck as I’m not taking that back, you ate too much of it» Huh? The manager on duty seemed afraid of the bartender and/or the kitchen staff and gave me a hard time as well but ultimately took it of the bill. Thankfully I live close as I barely made it home with severe stomach cramps. I’ll spare you the details, but I was sick for 2 days. Last night, my friend wanted sushi and we went again. I ordered the only sushi platter I can eat, changing a california roll to a salmon roll as I have been doing as long as I go to the place. Well, guess what? The kitchen staff demanded me to pay extra because salmon is a more expensive fish than what’s in the california roll. Obviously I told them I always make the change, but they did not budge. At that point, it became a matter of principal and I did not order. We did point out that if you order a california roll individually, the price is the same as a salmon roll. It is clear to me that they do not value customers, and the fact I see less and less people in the restaurant, makes me believe I’m not the only pissed of customer. The owner has received so many complaints over the years and apparently doesn’t care. I hope he’ll move out and someone who cares takes over. We need more bars and restaurants in our neck of the woods.

I came here for brunch, and it was good, but I found it very overpriced for what you get.

Eek. I should have taken the name of this place to heart and gone«next door.» I’m all for businesses like this finding success in the ever-evolving uptown neighborhood of Hudson Heights, but do a better job people! The food is a confusing combo of Asian-inspired dishes, sushi and things like pasta and burgers. I haven’t tried the sushi, but based on how bad and poorly cooked my chicken was, I shudder to think of their handling of raw fish. The service was flat out not good. The restaurant was basically empty and yet we had to wait for a long time to order, get water refilled and even ask for the check. The waiter couldn’t have been less attentive if he tried. I’ll not be back here again… and I strongly advise residents of the neighborhood to do the same — let’s get a real restaurant in this location ASAP.

I gave this place 1 star( Unilocal didn’t allow 0 stars) because it is the worst restaurant that I ever tried!!! Horrible food, horrible and slow service, horrible staff!!! Hope they go out of business and allow a decent place to open and utilize the waste space.

I want to like this place very much, and I have supported it for many years, in hopes that it will improve a few notches. As far as ambience, it is civilized, relaxed, comfortable, and welcoming. The menu is unusual in that it contains some Japanese as well as American and southern dishes that are not typically found in the neighborhood. The sushi Bento Box is a good value and it comes with a delicious miso soup. Comfort food is also part of the menu, with turkey meatloaf, chicken and ribs and nachos. The tomato corn chowder is a fantastic way to enjoy a winter lunch there. There are also several items that will please a vegetarian. There is a full bar, and there is sometimes a small coterie of neighbors that sit at the bar to chat and watch the TV. The waiters are extremely likeable and polite. The waiter and the busboy seem to disappear after the food is delivered and are not seen again for very long periods. If you drop a utensil, napkin, or need water, salt and pepper, you are stuck while your food gets cold.

I’ve ordered from here several times. I haven’t gotten any of the sushi or other asian foods but generally they are pretty good. I say generally because it is not consistent. I’ve tried a couple of things off the menu and sometimes I am so happy, it is exactly what I wanted, hits the spot, perfect. Others it is severely under-seasoned, or too oily, or just wrong, something is just off, which is why I’ve given three stars. I think there are different chefs, whoever the one is that works friday nights, I’m a fan, thanks for feeding me.

Ate here for the first time last night, the food was good not great. When I first looked at the menu, I got a little nervous — sushi, pasta, tex-mex dishes do not belong on the same menu. It seems like this place is going to for a high end diner theme with a little bit of everything. That said, the food itself was pretty good. I LOVED the blended salsa they served with chips to start and would little buy it to eat by itself. For dinner I had the Mahi-Mahi special which was pretty good, my boyfriend had a burger and he really liked the fries. I would try this place again but I really do think their menu needs to be pared down.

Have had brunch here on a few occasions and it has really gone down hill. This review reflects the last time I have been there, but the time before that already showed some warning signs. Just about everything that could go wrong, did, and I will not be back. The floors smelled like musty, dirty water, which will ruin your appetite quickly, were it not for other issues being even more glaring. The waitstaff was completely indifferent to what is happening in the restaurant, and in general it was understaffed. They took forever to come take our order, and then the food took a year to arrive. A basic menu item was not available due to it «being out of stock» and then french fries substituted home fries without any warning. My water was never refilled, nor were they very attentive to my friends’ coffees. The restaurant is by no means inexpensive, so I felt as though I had been robbed when we finished.

Weird vibe, again. Sunday night’s service was so spacey, they might be stoned. Honest. Avocado-on-outside roll order resulted in avocado on inside, followed by argument between waiter and busboy re: order; bread and butter arrived half way thru meal, slung onto table by silent busboy; no utensils ever brought to table, so chopstick used to dig out butter for roll. Quiet, near-empty atmosphere upended by bar regular taking long, loud cell call, with not a word from bartender. Always feels like I’ve walked into someone else’s private clubhouse — and I’m not particularly welcome.

I’m giving Next Door two stars because I have ordered FORYEARS(even before they changed their name) and order at least once a week. That being said, I ordered from GrubHub tonight and Next Door refused to give me a refund after the avocado in my salmon mango and avocado rolls was rotten. They claimed there was nothing wrong with this avocado and so I ask, would any other person be willing to eat the avocado I posted?

I was not satisfied with the food… BUT, I realize there were many great strengths. Con’s FIRST: Lacking in flavor. Very«safe». Seasoning yall. Where is it? Sides are small. Too small for price. Very meat heavy. Unbalanced portions. No napkins or utensils. Pros: Everything is fresh and well cooked. Presentation is well done, even for take out. They use garnishes for take out! Even condiments are unique and memorable.(Salsa, guacamole, ect.) Entrees: Chicken fried steak was literally plain ol’ fried chicken. Very little mash potato and gravy on the side. Steak burrito was not bad but I would have preferred condiments and sides inside instead of literal sneak wrapped in a tortilla. Or, simply leave the tortilla out and offer it up as a platter. The reason I say that is because the steak really shines. Its tender and nice and pink inside. Fatty ends. Classic, no fuss steak. Sushi was OK. Nothing to really note there. Nothing really blew me away, but its also not bad food. I still probably wouldn’t go again strictly on the fact that the price is high and the portions small.

Pros — quality ingredients, affordable price, great service, good drinks. Cons — No children’s menu. Many families come to this place but there is no menu for kids. I refused to pay a full dish for my two year old. They seriously need to add a menu unless they don’t want to welcome families with children.

Disrespectful staff, terrible service, and terrible food. For being a neighborhood establishment they don’t really have their finger on the pulse of what the neighborhood wants or how to cater to the needs of their cliental. Hopefully it will go the way of the Dodo and make room for another establishment that actually cares about quality and their neighborhood.

Was pmsing and all I wanted was a medium burger for pick up. Based on other reviews on Unilocal and word of mouth from people in the neighborhood(have lived here my entire life) I was a little nervous and even thought about checking if burger was cooked fully. Well my nightmare came true. Got home and my burger that was supposed to be medium is WELL done. Will attach a pic as well. Called and they wanted to send me another one. I’m starving and don’t want to wait 29 min for my dinner. I asked for my money back and they said they would only if I walked back there and returned the burger. All good. Will never give that place my business ever again in my life.

*sigh* As much as I want to leave a positive review, my dignity just won’t allow it. I’ve tried to give this place a chance-more than once, but they continue to disappoint me. The food just doesn’t seem fresh, and it’s mediocre(at best). The«Jumbo» crab cake was miniature, and over-cooked. The veggie burger was just OKAY. The mixed greens were a bit wilted and doused in balsamic dressing. It came with a strange, bland mayo(I think it was mayo…), and ketchup. I’m not much of a ketchup fan, but it was the only familiar item on that plate that could add flavor to the sad sandwich. Sorry, guys. Please do better. I want to like you, I really do! Pro: wifi Cons: everything else

6 cocktails were ordered and all were awful. Do NOT get the Stormy Hampton. Ick. Service was rough — we had to wait 10 minutes for the last drink to come, which ruined our toast. I came for the beer, but the options are so limited. No IPA’s on draft!
