Located in the southwest corner of the Washington Sq Park, this pace is hugely popular — had to wait for over an hour in the line before getting to eat. The masala dosa, vegetable uthappam, and idly lunch were all excellent and served with garlic chutney, sambar, and gunpowder. Interestingly, the uthappam and idly came with a generous portion of vegetables chopped in large sizes — lending a unique texture and adding freshness and zest to the dishes. Certainly worth a visit but not when in a rush.

If you like regular salt food, these dosa and sambhar will be bland for you. There was a huge line and it moves very slowly. i told the guy who was making dosa that we need to catch bus and he was kind enough to take us before others. Dosa is nothing out of the would. He adds a few extra things like crushed coconut over potato filling inside dosa.

Saw a video on the ‘Dosa man’ on Facebook. Wanted to definitely visit him during my trip to the NYC and I am happy that I did. :) Food was awesome! He is very polite and an amazing multi-tasker. He will prepare your food while conversing with each customer in a very nice manner. If you plan to visit these are 2 best-sellers on his menu: ‘Special pondicherry dosa Jaffna Lunch’

If I lived or worked closer to Washington Square Park, I think I would become a regular. The samosas was huge and stuffed with curry potatoes. They were still crispy 2hrs later, when I ate half of a samosa at home. I like the green sauce that came with it. The sauce wasn’t very overpowering. At 2 for $ 5, it was a pretty good deal. Pondicherry $ 7 — I really like the crêpe. It was so soft, and quite substantial. I didn’t care for the vegetable/salad filling. There was too much onions. Next time, I might just order a Sadha(plain) crêpe, or the Masala(potato) crêpe. The medium spicy was okay, it was only a tiny hint of spicy.

This is why you come to visit NYC. Or, this is why folks like me won’t ever leave. Thiru’s been slinging legendary dosas in the Park for years and it’s hands down the best dosa in NYC. Even my amma gives him her endorsement. This guy does dosa the right way. Period. I grew up in a S. Indian household and my amma made me dosas for lunch every of my life until I went to college. Living in NYC, there’s plenty of Indian food around but high quality S. Indian food is still a rarity. Thiru’s dosas are perfectly made and he even tailor makes them to youse desired spice level. His sambar is flavor and mixes perfectly with his coconut chutney. I always get the pondicherry dosa — all those fillings are delicious — and for $ 7 you get a delicious, healthy, naturally vegan meal. Samosas are top-notch as well.

Walked by the Washington Square Park Saturday afternoon after lunch and noticed the Dosa Man was still here. We haven’t had the chance to eat it — my girlfriend hadn’t either(even though she went to NYU) and we’ve never had a dosa… so we grabbed the basic dosa. It’s amazing. Airy, tasty and full of flavor with each bite. I’m not sure how the potatoes were so flavorful. Best thing I’ve eaten in a long time. $ 6 too.

This is so good. I’ve been wanting to try it since probably sophomore year of college and finally did come senior year. IVEBEENMISSINGOUT. The lunch lines I’ve heard were insane. I went at like 4pm and they still had a little bit left, they start running out at this time. I just got the masala dosa. It’s light, fluffy, the service is phenomenal and super chill and friendly. Really wish I came here sooner. ALSOTHEFLAVORSAREREALLYGOOD. Okay I’m done raving, gonna come back a lot.

i always come hunting for this place and invariably come up empty, but today, i arrived early enough that the dosa cart was still fired up. ordered the pondicherry dosa, spicy(which just means more mulagapodi, which is a spicy powder in peanut oil). the dosa was big, brown and super crispy. the filling is pretty aggressive, on top of the potato curry theres onion cilantro peppers carrots that add a fuckload of kick. and all for like 7 dollars, plus a dollar for the water. do yourself a favor and get the water instead of a soda, which just makes it hotter on your tongue. then i layed back at the park and ate it on the lawn. im not exactly sure why they gave me a spoon for. personally the spicy level is normal for me, but if you arent south indian, i dont recommend it. honestly i could eat another one they are so good hahah… much better than a lot of restaurants frankly. and in nyc its ultra hard to get quality, unamericanized indian food, and so for that, ny dosas is a kickass shoe-in 5 star spot.

Tried the masala dosa this afternoon(gluten free and vegan). I never eat from carts or food trucks but I think this will be my exception. The dosa was very thin and perfectly crispy and the curry flavored potato was super soft and creamy. I initially felt a little lost eating the dosa without washing my hands(what!!!) sitting on a bench with NYC pigeons around… Nevertheless, the dosa was so yummy that the germaphobic me was almost okay today with this unusual experience… Hubby was in need of some animal protein so this wasn’t a perfect place for him. Also, tried the wheat free, vegan oatmeal raisin cookies. Three cookies for three bucks!!! What a steal! We had them later with iced green tea latte from Roasting Plant — I call it a perfect day… Oh, I thanked the owner after my meal and he gave a big big genuine happy smile. =) Will be going back soon and remember to bring some hand sanitizer w me.

My first Dosa experience. I got the pondicherry with less potatoes and extra vegetables, medium spicy. It was a little hard to eat because everything sort of fell apart when I picked it up and I think what makes it special is the batter itself –it was light and airy and flavorful. The fillings were just your run of the mill potatoes and salad mix(peppers, greens, onions, ginger). Best thing was the coconut chutney though. Damnnnn.

Interesting street food, location a bit easy to miss. Vendor was very friendly. Food was good but the flavor wasn’t strong enough for me, should have asked for more sauce!

This little food cart is easy to miss, just look for the crowds of people queuing and sitting eating their food on the nearby benches. The huge dosa was delicious and he’ll make it as spicy as you like. All the food is vegan which made me very happy. He was really friendly too which was the icing on the cake. I thoroughly recommend the Dosa Man.

NY Dosas is a New York STAPLE. Pretty much every vegan has heard of /loves it. THENYDOSAMAN … ISTHEMAN! He is always SO friendly, so accommodating, so excited to share these delicious flavors with you. All the sauces are so yummy and unique, perfectly and delicately balanced. The vegan drumsticks are an awesome snack when you’re walking through the park, and the dosas are just indescribably delicious. My favorite is definitely the special pondicherry, but trust me, you just really can’t go wrong here. This place is famous for a reason. If you’ve walked by the cart a million times and just never taken them time to try it, just turn around right now and and go stuff your face. You will not regret it.

One of my favorite street finds in New York! We were walking around the park when we stumbled upon the NY Dosas cart. First and foremost, hats off to the gentleman who runs this. It was very obvious that he has regulars as they came up to order almost immediately after he was done setting up. He already knew some of their orders and was really accommodating in taking special requests, etc. We actually weren’t even that hungry, but I can’t pass up a chance to eat a dosa so my boyfriend and I got the Pondicherry Dosa to share. The owner told us it would take about 20 minutes for him to get it ready, which was fine with us. The dosa itself was absolutely delicious with a golden flaky crust. The chutney and sambar were tasty as well. If you’re a fan of spicy food, you’ll definitely like the sambar! I’d recommend getting just a plain dosa if you’re not too hungry but the Pondicherry Dosa made for a really filling meal since it’s stuffed with potatoes and other vegetables. The size of the dosa is fairly large too, enough for two to share. If I lived in NY, I’d definitely become one of NY Dosa man’s frequent customers. I highly recommend checking this cart out to others!

What can I say that hasn’t already been said? The food(especially the samosas) are incredible, and the man is a saint! My girlfriend texts him all the time in advance to make sure that we’ll get food before he runs out in the early afternoon.

Really good dosas. thiru knows what he’s doing, I asked for all the filling separately since I wanted my dosa crispy and he did a really good job and the taste was very authentic. He also gives a chutney, rasam with sambar veggies and salad with the lunch option, all for 7 $. He’s inside the Washington square park, at the Sullivan cross street. Def check him out when you are craving good South Indian food.

This guy left me a mediocre review of my chest hair, so I’m going to give him a Dosa his own medicine and do the same for his cart. I’m just kidding, I don’t have chest hair! Okay, well I won’t for too much longer maybe. Speaking of chest hair. Dosas don’t have Chest Hair. I wanted to love this place, I really did. I never really liked dosas much until I went to Queens and tried the Ganesh Temple Canteen(omgggggggggggggg) and then I fell in love with them. I tried this Dosa before that, and it just didn’t do anything for me. It was a little dry, a little bland. It was similar to some of the other dosas I’ve had around the country, maybe not as good. Still, it’s great that he’s prospering and has a lot of fans and I totally support him. He seems like a really nice guy and got along very well with my food tour companion. And as Garland said: Uma Thurman was here once, and got a few trays of food. And they leave them there as a shrine. So, they can point at «Uma’s Dosa Trays»

This should be added as one of NY’s classics! Plus, they’re located right in Washington Square Park! We had their special pondicherry made spicy(it wasn’t that spicy, more flavorful, really!), the plain uthappam(both dishes were tasty), as well as the samosa and roti to go. You can eat across the street, as there are some tables and benches all around. The guy was really friendly and personable, and the spices and potatoes were really good. I want to try those Singaporean noodles, but they tend to sell out pretty quickly!

Passed this everyday and finally I got the chance to come here after seeing its high rating on Unilocal. Finally, when it was warm out, I came here with a friend to try out a dosas. It is a tiny food cart decorated with many sticker awards in Washington Square Park across from NYU law school and next to the dog park. The wait was a bit long but totally worth it. While waiting, you can watch the children play in the little playground or talk to a random stranger waiting on line who is also mesmerized but NY Dosa’s anonymous yet famous reputation. The worth was totally worth it because the man who owns it, Thiru, is incredibly receptive to every person’s order. He is totally willing to go out of his way to be hospitable to every person by asking you how you want your order done while you watch. Nothing is out of sight from the customer. My friend ordered the Pondicherry Dosas which was amazing! The portion was excellent for the price and was totally good to split. The toasted coconut totally balanced out the spiciness of the veggies(curried potato, onion, pepper) in a lentil and rice wrap. Also there was an orange sauce(coconut curry?) and a side of sambar which was excellent. I will definitely come back to try something!

The culinary masterpieces from this cart make my heart full. As a graduate student in a city far from home, I’ve been on the search for South Asian food with the right combination of flavors and spices that warm me up from the inside and make me feel at home. Too often, Indian restaurants in NYC are in an arms race to make flashy, creamy, fatty and intense food to attract rave reviews and attention — but the NY Dosa Cart knows the proof is in the pudding(more specifically, in the Pondicherry Dosa). Grabbing lunch from this cart puts a little piece of home in my day(and for a good price too)! My personal favorite is the Pondicherry Dosa, but the samosa and uttapams are great as well. Thiru uses a really unique combination of veggies in each dosa, and the coconut chutney is phenomenal. Truly delicious, fresh and authentic South Indian/Sri Lankan cuisine.
