Nasty. Had to leave as it smelled so gross. The owner seemed so excited that a customer came in!

We have been going to Ginger Root since it changed ownership over a year ago, mostly for take out. We found the staff very friendly and attentive and most of the dishes were fantastic. We usually would order one dish and asked them for 4 fortune cookies, which we always received. In the last month or so, there seem to be different people running the restaurant, who are not as friendly or attentive. We have asked for 4 fortune cookies on two occasions and were told no problem, only to get home and find one fortune cookie in the bag. Last week we ordered one of our usual dishes«Sliced White Meat Chicken with Fresh Mushroom in Oyster Sauce» which we loved in the past and were very disappointed. The dish we were used to had only chicken and mushrooms in it and tasted great. The dish last week had chicken, carrots, pea pods, Chinese cabbage, water chestnuts, but hardly any mushrooms. It didn’t taste very good. We will not be going back to the Ginger Root anytime soon. Another great Chinese restaurant bites the dust.

This is actually quite decent Chinese food for Boston. They stay a little from serving exclusively Chinese, which is usually a red flag, but ginger root pulls it off. Good pot sticker, general Chao and mu shu.

Much better under the new ownership!!! Management is very nice and invested in their customers — frequently, calling them by name, etc. I also love a place that posts their«superior» inspection rating(10⁄15). While I haven’t tried a lot of different dishes everything I have eaten had been very good.

Stumbled into this place by chance while helping relatives move into the Newton neighborhood. The owner was very welcoming as I picked up take out food after a long day of unpacking, and he told me confidently it was the best in the neighborhood.(of course, I thought to myself tongue in cheek, ready to eat paint off the walls) I was VERY impressed. My dinner was delicious, and everyone else enjoyed theirs as well. The menu is definitely a keeper and when I’m back in town, Ginger Root is at the top of the list! The owner wasn’t lying.

Forget EVERYTHING you ever knew about the former Ginger Root, because this is a whole new deal. The new owners have done a lovely job redecorating, and their energy and pride make for a very pleasant meal. The food is solid, the menu is enormous, the service is fast and good, and there is a light, fresh quality to the traditionally heavy and greasy Chinese-American cuisine. The elegant square white dishes are a nice touch. The prices are very reasonable. As the banner says, it’s a whole new dining experience. If classic Chinese-American dishes are your thing, this is your spot for comfort food!

This place is a hidden gem. Doesn’t exactly stand out to you when you drive by it through the little place i like to call Nonantum(Da Lake) Massachusetts but we stumbled upon this place after the Carnival last year. nice straight forward setting inside the dining room section. Pretty sure the owner’s/management is part of the wait staff because they wait on you hand and foot. The food comes out real quick and delicious. Always very fast and friendly. Honestly, Chinese food isn’t exactly my thing(i’m more of a mexican/burrito lover) but this is seriously great, cannot go wrong Chinese food served with a smile. Also their delivery is very quick.

We Ordered two dinner plates: General gau chicken with crab Rangoon and house fried rice, Egg foo young with chicken wings, pork fried rice and a beef pan fried noodle. General gau: Flavor was great, crispy. Uses white meat which is rare and delicious. Crab Rangoon: Delicious, light, perfectly flavored and balanced. House fried rice: we took a three dollar upcharge to get the house fried rice and it was worth it. Moist, seasoned well, fresh. Egg foo young: Done perfectly, crunchy, not too greasy. Just how it’s supposed to be. The gravy is done traditionally. Chicken wings: crispy and good, but could use a tad bit more marinade for a richer flavor. Pork fried rice: Good but slightly bland. Beef pan fried noodles: crispy noodles topped with perfectly cooked vegetables and just enough beef. Large portion for one. Overall, the food tastes healthier than most chinese places, light on oil and tastes like theres no msg. We’re definitely going to come back and hope others will as well, it’s on a side street location but the service is nice and friendly and the food is worth it.

I live down the street and order from here almost weekly for the past few months since they changed cooks/management. My husband(who has a ridiculously sensitive stomach) has never had any upset from this restaurant which makes it a regular on our takeout list. I have never dined in so I cannot speak to waitstaff service, but the gentleman who organizes take out is always friendly and the food has never been late or wrong. I have ordered dishes thinking they were something different but still enjoyed them. Pretty good Chinese, I will miss it when we move.

I have tried the new Ginger Root restaurant twice — and both times i had a yummy fresh meal. Crisp fresh vegetables, yummy fried rice and crab rangoons. The General Gau’s chicken was great! I ordered the combo plate special — a nice plate of food for a great price! I would recommend it for sure. People who run it are very nice — I’ll be going back.

I found Ginger Root on Unilocal; I agree with everyone’s cheers for the Crab Rangoons — the oil must be very fresh b/c they are light and crispy, not dense and oily. I don’t esp buy the fried stuff but, as a fried item, super yum. I tried old standards as the litmus test and found the moo shi chicken to be very plentiful and had a good, savory flavor; the General Gau’s had a good chicken to batter balance, although Iwhould like the sauce to be spicier. The Yu Hsiang eggplant was a huge serving with a lot of crunch water chestnuts… making me very happy; I dob’t like the inherent oiliness of this dish but overall it was very tasty and not as oily as some; broccoli was cooked just right in the broc/tofu dish, as well. It took about an hour from phone call to delivery, so plan accordingly. The food was surprisingly hot when it arrived, so that was a bonus! Double bonus, the gentleman who took my order was quick but thorough, friendly and there weren’t any language-based misunderstandings.

As a fairly regular customer of both the bar and the restaurant I was baffled by the review dated 2÷22÷15. I have never seen or smelled cigarette smoke while dining and/or drinking here. I am an ex-smoker who can’t stand the smell and I would have definitely noticed it! I have only great reviews for the restaurant and the bar. On my last visit I had the General Gau Chicken which is incredible. I enjoy dining in the bar when I eat in. They bartenders are attentive, funny and pour great drinks. The jukebox there rocks.

I thought the food here was solid. The pan fried rave were a little on the doughy side for my liking, but the chicken and string bean was pretty good(garlicky, ginger goodness). Top that with some sriracha out of the fridge, and you’ve got a party in your mouth! Now I know this is technically a generalization, but I feel like ordering Chinese take out is always a craps shoot and you never know what your going to get. For example, beef and broccoli… No description or detail of what you’re gonna be dealing with. I feel like the absolute max detail you’re going to get is «brown sauce» which doesn’t give you anything to go by. Anyway, I lucked out with the«chicken and string bean.» This place is totally safe, and will fulfill you’re need for Chinese takeout; rock out with your wok out!

I was in search of an Asian place in the area that had sit down and was surprised to find Ginger Root was right down the street from my place. The place is somewhat small if you’re planning to eat in there’s only about 6 – 7 tables. I ordered the Rice Noodles with Black Bean sauce, my boyfriend ordered the orange chicken, and we split the crab ragoons. The crab ragoons were delicious(a must try!). The food quality was great — some Chinese places you leave feeling sick after you leave this is definitely NOT one of those places.

Okay I admit it, when it rains I crave Chinese. Michael and May new owners, got a new chef and when I call they know what I want, and exactly how I like it. They redesigned the restaurant, smells new if you know what I mean. I was pleased to see new menu with coupons. The one thing I love not on it, hoping they make special for me. They have too many items to list an option, just try them all. Part 2: went in for pick up, owner May called me out on two stars on Unilocal.Michael walked away from conversation because he knew she went to far. Insulting doesn’t begin to cover how I was treated. –1 stars would be appropriate. Old owner food was much better and friendly.

So far, I am impressed… they are under new management, so we just started trying them and they are great so far. First, the two times I have ordered I have had two very pleasant people(one man and one woman) take my orders… seriously, super nice, helpful, and speak English… kind of a crazy thing for me. Next, one time we picked up and the other time we had delivery. The pick up was easy, food was hot, everything was ready quickly. The delivery was amazing… they said 40 minutes, but got it to us in 15minutes… Food was so hot and great… Things we have tried: Sweet and Sour pork Sesame Chicken Hawaiian Fried Rice Special Fried Rice Crab Rangoon White Rice Spring Rolls Scallion pancakes All was really good, especially the crab Rangoon, which I LOVED… it was finally not overfried, and you could actually taste the cream cheese and crab(many other places in the area don’t give you much filling, mostly just fried dough) We will be ordering again. The one thing that brings down the review… their website kind of sucks :) And there is no online ordering. They need to get on Eat24 and I will order probably every weekend!

Very good food, great delivery. We were so pleasantly surprised by the food from the new management. Chicken fingers, spare ribs, pork fried rice and general gao’s were all very well done. We ordered online and the food arrived about as quickly as it could have. We finally have our local go to Chinese take out place!

This is an update to my original(2 star) Ginger Root review from November of 2013. I am happy to say that the restaurant is under new management and the food has dramatically improved. The General Gau chicken I ordered was white meat chicken and no chewy bits like before and, a good level of «hot.» Lo-mein was tasty with fresh vegetables. They have refurbished the dine-in area and it looks clean, albeit claustrophobic, due to a minimum of windows. While there was nothing about the food that blew me away to garner 5-Stars, I think most will find it quite good, and in my opinion the best Chinese restaurant of its kind in the area. I hope word gets out and they are able to be profitable and keep a high quality of food — try them out!

Chicken and beef teriyaki are really good! Everytime I pick up food from this place I am surprised at how good the appetizers are!
