Overall, great food, service and experience. I would definitely recommend Totopo Mexican Grill. Read my tips!

Simply put… fish tacos are the BOMB! i never had fish tacos before and they were an orgy in my mouth. Delicious flavors with a great coleslaw mix topping. Yumm. they steak tacos were good too. Not a fan of their flavored chips or their chicken or veggie tamales. Although I am spoiled from eating my Hispanic friend’s mom’s cooking. Overall they had me at Fish tacos.

Did I mention we went back that same NIGHT(after eating there at lunch) for more dessert? Yeah, I had to share the love with more friends and of course it was a hit. This place rocks.

Totopo has a really casual atmosphere. You order at the counter, and your order is brought to you with a smile. The prices are very fair, and their menu is pretty extensive for a restaurant this size. I ordered the tacos pastor, and the meat was very dry. The serving size was fair, but there were no side dishes included. I ate one taco, had one left, and wasn’t even motivated to take it home as leftovers. Meh. This is a good, quiet place to meet friends and eat some inexpensive Mexican food.

I wish I could give Totopo 3.5 stars simply because of their delightful churros. I had never noticed this charming place until I received an email about their participation in Restaurant Week being hosted by some Oak Brook restaurants. Three of us came together for dinner ready to try out the Restaurant Week menu but there was no special that accommodated one person, so the third person in our party ended up ordering the Chef’s special carne asada platter. One of my friends and I ordered together the Restaurant Week dinner special which was a meal for two. For $ 25.00 total, we each got a small margarita, a shared sampler plate of mini tostadas for the appetizer, a shared heaping platter of steak fajitas, and for dessert individual plates of churros with chocolate sauce. We were given a number and we chose to sit at one of the extremely clean booths inside the building. There is a small side patio as well. Within minutes our margaritas and sodas were at the table. The margaritas were served in whiskey glasses and were extremely sweet/tart and loaded with liquor and salt on the rim. Thankfully the wait for our appetizer was minimal. The carne asada platter came with a chips and salsa. You are given at the time you order a choice of chips and a choice of salsas. My friend ordered the multi-colored chips with green roasted salsa. The chips were fresh as well as the salsa, but both were extremely bland. We got our 5 mini tostadas soon after the chips came, and though they were all very good, the bottom chip-tostadas had become less than crunchy, and were more on the flabby soft side. Our plates were whisked away and the entrees served. Our shared steak fajita platter was seasoned nicely and had refried black beans, a bit of sour cream on the side, and a spoonful of pico de gallo. The seasonings were good, the meat plentiful but definitely extremely chewy. We were all given warm corn tortillas along with our meal. The carne asada platter came with a spoonful each of guacamole, pico de gallo, large serving of refried black beans, and a healthy amount of meat. My dinner companion had no complaints and devoured the entire plate. We’re big guacamole fans so we all tried his guacamole and it was just okay — nothing to write to the casa about. It just did not taste homemade. Again our plates were whisked away and our table cleaned of debris. We all sat waiting anxiously for the dessert plate to come… and then we waited some more. Ten minutes later, someone asked us how our meal had been and promptly turned around without us being able to mention the lack of dessert or how our meal had actually been. Finally someone came by again and asked if we had gotten our dessert. When we said we hadn’t, she left and we saw her tell the kitchen staff to get on it. Within 10 minutes we had our piping hot churros with chocolate sauce at the table. Each order came with three churros which we generously shared with our companion. These were amazing! Two of us thought the chocolate sauce(which has some cinnamon undertones) was a worthy companion, and one of us thought it was not necessary. We all loved how fresh and hot they were. Overall, Totopo is a very clean, order at the counter restaurant, with very reasonable prices, good solid food and stellar churros. I would definitely return if I’m hungry and going to the Yorktown Cinema, since it’s a stone’s throw away and I loved me those churros.

Cochinita Pibil Tacos. I read about them, I tried them, I loved them. I laughed, I cried, I ordered more. Seriously, these tacos are da bomb. Go on Tuesdays and score free rice(meh) and black beans(yum!).

The first thing you notice is how not busy this place is. Compared to Kona Grill right next door. The service was excellent, even though this is an order at the front and they bring you your food. The staff kept asking if everything was alright and how we were doing. The burrito I had was really good and very fresh. My friend also really, really enjoyed her tacos. The place was quiet and great to have a conversation in. As a vegetarian I appreciated the number of vegetarian options on the menu. The margaritas are excellent, but could be bigger. I’d definitely give it a try. Definitely worth it.

My rating would be about 3.5 stars if given the choice. I noticed this new restaurant back in Feb. when I had the pleasure of dining at Labriola. So I finally got around to trying Totopo, and must say I was both overwhelmed and underwhelmed. Let me explain. I had three tacos(pork pibil, another pork, and barbacoa) which came with rice and beans and then I finished off with an order of 3 churros. The pork pibil taco was delicious! Since I tried it first, I was disappointed that I didn’t order three of them. The other two were OK, with the dry pork being the worst of the three. The rice and beans were underwhelming. The Spanish rice was very salty. Another standout was the churros, which came with chocolate sauce. I didn’t need the sauce; they were decidedly unhealthy but excellent. I look forward to having these again. So I will go back, but only for the pork pibil tacos and churros. Maybe I’ll try a torta too.

A little different than the average taqueria. I liked it. I ordered tacos. Barbacoa was the best. I wasn’t going to have dessert, but the pastel de tres leches looked awesome and the server said it was homemade, so who am I to resist? It was good. Buen Provecho, Totopo!

Had lunch here with a friend and was just ok. I expected to be seated and served but it turned out to be a register and order in line type of place. The menu was large and on a chalkboard so it made it hard to really be indecisive. The girls behind the counter did nothing to make suggestions or help order. They just stared and smiled at you while you looked confusingly at the menu. There was a try with four chip and salsa options to try next to the line with no real flavor. I didn’t care for any of the chip/salsa combination. I ordered the veggie torta sandwich and it was pretty good but nothing to exciting. My friend ordered the the taco platter and got 2 chicken and 1 veggie taco. She enjoyed the chicken but veggie was just ok. Overall may not consider going back. nothing to lure me in for a second temptation.

With my frequent travel to Mexico and in particular to the DF… I think that I know my mexican food. I have a definite love for street tacos so I had to try the tacos here at Totopo. The room is clean, well lit and decorated with Mexican items i.e. mirrors, hanging punched tin star lights and a beautiful/colorful mural of Mayan temples(looks to be the temples at Palenque in Chiapas). I went with the Tuesday special… which meant free sides(black beans and mexican rice) with my tacos. I ordered the 3 taco set and mix and matched it. On recommendation from the Moldavian host(!) I went with: *Pescado-fish of the day(tilapia) with mexican japapeno slaw. *Pastor(of course!) roasted pork rubbed with guajillo chile & cilantro and onions. *Arrachera-grilled skirt steak & cilantro & onions. The tacos were corn tortilla«double wrapped». Very fresh Very tasty Beverage of choice: Modelo Especial. Nice and cold. One thing that you need to try is the chip and salsa samples. My choice was the Tres Chiles salsa. Guajillo, morita chiles & chile ancho. Flavorful & not to spicy hot. Overall a really nice place. Will try the tortas next time Wouldn’t it be great to have places like this outside/on the street? Why do all the other world class cities have great street food and Chicagoland(for the most part) only has umbrella hot dog carts??? Viva Street Tacos!!!

Honestly, they have some of the best Tortas I have ever had. I love them! Plus the chips and salsa are the bomb! I also had dessert this time around. The chocolate tamal with vanilla bean ice cream. I think they messed up because I got coconut ice cream but I don’t care! I couldn’t stop eating it! Yum. People, please check this place out. I’d hate for them to go out of business!

Went to lunch with Osi V(yes…we are wezbian wuvvers =]) and the boys yesterday around 11:45 and the place was dead! I hope business picks up soon since I was rather impressed. I got Max some Crema Poblana soup and also some chips and salsa for Milo and I while we waited for O to get there. Oh… and I ordered an horchata… SOOO good… one of the best I have ever had! Just with the glass was like 10 times the size! =] They have four different flavors of chips and salsas, you pick one or a mix of the chips you like and one of the salsas per order. I had the three pepper salsa and was in love with the blue corn tortilla chips, the rest of the chips were just kind of blah or kind of nahhh. The Crema Poblana soup was not as thick as I would have liked but the flavor was good and Max ate it so that’s a thumbs up right there! Once Tia O got there we ordered a Torta de Milanesa(chicken) and four tacos, carne asada, pastor, pibil and barbacoa. I loved all the tacos except for the barbacoa, despite being beef, for some reason it tasted gamey… weird, huh?! And the torta… mmmm mmmm! So GOOD! It had roasted poblano peppers, panela cheese, black beans and the chicken was nice and crisp tender! And it didn’t end there… yep…the fatness continued with a churro and a tamal de chocolate which was basically like a little chocolate tamale cake. Both desserts were very good, but that tamal… mmmm…I could eat that everyday! It was so rich, moist, chocolatey… a must try for anyone that likes both tamales and chocolate. I will def be coming back in here with Fred and my sister to show them all my faves from this new spot. =]

Wake me up, before Totopo! Cuz I’m not plannin’ on goin’ solo. A place like Totopo deserves to be enjoyed with a few friends, with a few Coronas or Vicorias, and a large order of chipotle chips and tres chiles salsa. For starters, the tortilla soup is bien sabroso, with a great flavor, and it almost tastes like it has pureed beans in the soup. Topped with a little queso fresco and some sour cream, the soup has a slightly spicy and texture-rich flavor. For the main dish, I highly recommend the torta de milanesa. The chicken is delicately fried, and tastes very homemade, with a great blend of cheese and peppers on a sweet toasted pelican-type bread. The torta makes a great sized meal. I didn’t get to try any of the desserts, but anytime I hear«tres leches», the inner fat kid in me starts to drool just a little bit. Next time I bring someone here, it will be mine. Oh yes. It will be mine.

I visited Totopo Mexican Grill for a quick lunch, and I was pleasantly surprised with my experience. The restaurant has excellent décor and very modern and comfortable feel. The menu is pretty expansive for a fast casual Mexican fusion restaurant. I chose to go with the Tinga de Pollo Burrito(stewed chicken). The burrito was very good. I also tried the Guac salsa with my burrito which was simply amazing. I could definitely eat a huge bowl of the stuff! Even though the restaurant is fast casual, I still felt well taken care of. My table was bussed quickly after finishing my meal and the manager(possibly owner) stopped by to see how my meal was. I had a great experience at Totopo, and I look forward to returning to try some additional dishes.

This Mexican grill with authentic-fusion dishes and beverages was sorely needed in this area, after Adobo Grill closed over a year ago. I went for lunch today and ordered the totopo torta, a plain horchata, and a tres leches cake for dessert. I know that’s a lot of carbs and sugar, but OMG I had to dive right in. The torta is a spectacular soft-toasted bolillo with dark refried beans, onions, and a variety of corn and zucchini chopped vegetables with crumbly, delicious cheese for just a little extra oomph of flavor. Delectable. The simple pleasure of bolillo bread with beans and onions is amazing. The plain horchata came with large ice cubes but tasted original and refreshing. The tres leches could have been a little more flavorful, I think a lot of the liquid drained out and the icing wasn’t as authentic(chantilly) as it may otherwise have been, but the idea of putting dried coconut as a topping was delish. I shall be back. With reinforcements. You can count on it! Omnomnom. ¡Qué rico!

I’m very happy to have this place in Oak Brook! Butterfield road was in desperate need of a Mexican place serving skirt steak tacos the way they should be served — with onion and cilantro on a corn tortilla. So simple yet so delicious. It’s a little worrysome that it was completely dead in there at 12:30 in the afternoon on a Tuesday. But Totopo has only been open for a month. I hope things pick up quickly for them as I don’t know of any other restaurants in the area that serve the type of food found here — a more authentic Mexican style. Will locals accept food they haven’t tried like the cochinita pibil? The way it works is you order your food from the counter, pay, and are handed a number. You head back to a table waiting for them to bring your food. I’ll start off with the bad… the Mexican rice and beans were rather dull. The rice was boringly bland while the beans had an interesting flavor. I wouldn’t pay for these in the future but they came free today due to a special on Tuesday’s. However, my skirt steak tacos dipped in the habanero salsa were great! The steak was charred on the outside and it really provided the Mexican fix I needed. It was spicy but my tongue was still in tact by the end. It’s nice to see a place serving dishes you won’t really find anywhere else in the area. Tortas, Mexican style tacos, and an array of salsas that are respectable in terms of flavor. I will definiely be back — guacamole here we come!

Holy Guacamole this place is muy delicioso! I went today with a group of work friends to see what was up as I am a Mexican food fan. Now I am a Totopo fan. I had the Pastor burrito with the Guaca salsa(which is pureed and delish), a side of sour cream and a drink. The pork was perfection. It even had bits of pineapple in the mix that added a sweet and acidic surprise to the creamy goodness of the beans, salsa and sour cream. The tortilla was grilled and had perfect chewy yet crispy texture which to me is the most important factor in tortilla goodness. When you walk in they have their chips(or totopos) to sample with the salsas. I have to say the chips had a sorta stale texture and lack of salt I did not particularly care for but was super glad they put them out for me to discover that. Also the people there were very kind and attentive which is very appreciated for a place that is counter order. Over all the food for everyone was soooooooo good but the prices are a little much in my opinion. For the items I listed above I spent $ 11, no sides of rice, beans and no chips, just the normal sized burrito and drink. A little less a la carte would have gotten this place a solid 5 stars.

The remodeled space is very nicely appointed, and spacious. The steak burrito I had was quite tasty, as was the horchata — though it wasn’t as much ‘chata as I would’ve liked(but that’s always the case). The staff were quite friendly and attentive. I was surprised, however, that a bowl of chips didn’t automatically get placed on the table. A tasty and convenient lunch option in the area, for sure.
