First time here after hearing many good things about the place from friends. Beer menu is limited, although they do have Loose Cannon(my favorite). Decent drink and wine menu. Had the swordfish, maybe the best ever. Wife had the seafood scampi, said it was excellent, and she works in the craft. The staff is engaging and attentive.

Great food and value especially their daily specials. The food is plentiful with lots of leftovers for lunch the next day. Been there four times recently and will be going back.

This is my new favorite restaurant after going for the first time in January — I wish I had tried it sooner because I feel like I have been missing out! This is a great family restaurant and I plan on coming back frequently. Good for a small private dinner and also accommodating for large groups. The service has always been great for me. There is a good variety on the menu with a different special for each day of the week — the deals are unbelievable. Portions are much larger than you would expect with the affordable prices. House wine is a very generous pour. The escargot is served heaping on a platter and is tender and juicy. The calamari is crisped to perfection in a light batter. The baked stuffed shrimp, paella, and«boats» are all great but my personal favorite is the pork alentejana. If you haven’t tried this traditional Portuguese dish featuring pork, potatoes and little necks you absolutely have to try it. It will change your life. Keep up the good work Checker Club.

Not sure how this place is still in business. Third time trying it because it’s convenient. The bar is nice and big and our bartender/server was great thats where the niceties end. Pear Martini on menu-didn’t have the pear purée. She had to tell them how to make an alternative. It was ok not great. Ordered baked sea scallop casserole with baked potatoes and green beans. Scallops were rubbery and tasteless. Green beans were old and not fresh turning yellow. Baked potato was hard. My husband ordered fried clams. Appeared to be mostly strips a couple bellies. And not a lot. Coleslaw tasted very off. Steak fries flavorless. Better places to spend my money. Too bad

Have been a few times and have enjoyed our meals. Last night a round of drinks(for 4) were purchased for us by a neighbor. When paying the bill, the free round did not show up. After questioning it, we were offered 2 free desserts. We had already passed on dessert prior. Again, the manager was approached and 2 drinks were removed. They were still 2 drinks ahead. Shady dealings to me and will tell the friend who paid for drinks that he paid for something not recieved. I had seafood paella. Have had it before. Don’t remember the sauce on the lobster, which made the dish very messy when trying to crack the claw. Would think twice about getting it again. California chicken club. Chicken in sandwich was cold. Son would avoid next time also. Kind of disappointed all around.

We live right down the street from this place! I absolutely love it! Take out is always happening! I have yet to be disappointed! The eggplant parm is sooo good! The portions for pasta are amazing! When I take my 2 year old daughter here it’s very kid friendly with the cute cups, crayons and all! They carry Fial sauce here as well. That itself made my life! Omggg… Looks like I’ll be calling here for take out later! So good! Very authentic!

My friends and I dined there last week. We thoroughly enjoyed it. I will say it could use a woman’s touch. Needed some decorating. It is by far — the BEST bread pudding on the planet and the waitstaff and the manager are super nice. Can’t wait to go back. Salmon was very good, did not care for the stuffing on the baked stuffed shrimp, but that is a personal thing. Very clean.

Such a let down. I was really looking forward to trying this place however it was not good. The Portuguese soup is the worst I’ve ever had. The Portuguese steak with egg was very dry. No traditional sauce on it. My friends meal was good however she had a hair in it! They barely acknowledged this! They did make her a new dish but no acknowledgement from a manager?! Or even a complimentary meal or something?! Nothing! Not pleased and would not go back.

Went there for lunch @ 12:15PM on 10/31/2015 and we were 1 of 3 small groups in the dining room. After placing our order(turkey club sandwich & boneless fried chicken plate), it was over 30 minutes before our meals came out of the kitchen and in fact, the waitress apoligized for the delay and said she couldn’t understand the delay as there were only 3 groups in the dining room. After a few bites of my «boneless» chicken, i bit into a 2″ long bone. I made the server aware and her response was«well, you know it’s real chicken». Needless to say, we will not be returning to this establishment.

This is a little gem in pawtucket. They have good specials and appetizers and the service is very professional. The inside is very clean and spacious with a separate bar area. This would be nice for a family get together or casual date without having to drive far.

Dined here last night and I really wanted to like it. Atmosphere was plain and nondescript. Waitress was cordial and friendly, but she reminded me of a waitress at a greasy spoon diner. Food was not worth the wait. I ordered a thick cut, blackened swordfish. The swordfish was very thin, but cooked well. Taste was bland. How do you blacken fish with no taste?! Side of broccoli was a dingy green color, which told me it had sat a while and was overcooked– bingo. Other side of zucchini and summer squash went untouched by myself or my boyfriend. It looked like it sat for hours in a holding pan. My boyfriend’s meal was much better, hence the 3 stars. He ordered the spaghetti squash/shrimp/scallop special, in a cream sauce. It had a very mild flavor, so that I could not distinguish what flavor profile they were aiming for. But the scallops and shrimp were grilled perfectly. We skipped desert and coffee, but I did eye the glass display of perfectly made store bought confections. I would not go out of my way to dine here again, unless they make some significant changes to how they prepare the food.

My family used to go to the old Checker Club all the time while it was still owned by Ray Matthew, and last night for an early father’s day dinner we decided to give this new iteration a try. In appearance alone it could not be more different, case in point, there are now windows. Many windows. My memory of the old Checker Club is a dark, intimate restaurant, the kind of place you imagine Ray Liotta ordering dinner. Now, it is a bright and welcoming affair. Ordinarily when you get salmon at a restaurant out, it is dry, overcooked, as if someone was terrified that the salmon may reach the table still resembling salmon. So when I ordered the Shrimp and Salmon Mozambique on a whim I was a little apprehensive. I needn’t have been, as it was quite good. If you liked the old Checker Club, you will be utterly confused at first, but this place deserves a try.

We used to go to the old Checker Club on Sundays for the family style chicken and to enter a time warp… it was fun. The new Checker Club is very clean, in fact, almost sterile looking. The food is ok… a little bit too pricey for what it is. We had steamers that were really yummy and I had a chicken special that I really, really liked. My husband’s steak sandwich was mediocre and I had a burger when they first opened that was not really good at all. I do wish that they had more gluten free options. I know most people think it’s a fad, but there are some of us that have sensitives and with so many GF options out there, I was disappointed they didn’t have any GF rolls or wraps. I settled for a GF pasta dish that again, was really, really good. We live around the corner so I’m sure we will return, but I wouldn’t go out of my way to return.

Bright, clean establishment, great attentive service… but the food is simply sub-par. It felt very banquet-y. The appetizers(calamari and steamers) that we had were very disappointing… and…this is Rhode Island: if your calamari isn’t top notch, please just don’t have it on the menu! My petite fillet was ok, my dinner companions didn’t mind their entrees… but at this mid-to-high price point, I want to feel as though I can’t make it better myself. The final bill for four people was a bit surprising, too… $ 160 with shared appetizers, and only two of the four having a drink. Still scratching my head on that one… Too many new and old good restaurants in the area to bother going back… unless the Unilocal reviews from now forwards convince me I am off my rocker. looking forwards to seeing my Unilocal peers convince me I am wrong!

These people do show favoritism and serve c r a p! The menu is outdated and the quality is subpar. Frozen and microwaved. Spend your money on a real restaurant, if you want real food. Bathroom is nasty and folks don’t flush, either!!!

To kick off a new year, Ryan and I decided to try a brand new place! Yay for being adventurous right? After some Unilocal searching, we decided on checking out The Pawtucket Checker Club after some favorable reviews. I must warn you, it’s a bit tough to see the sign for this place as it is only on the side of the building. There are 2 entrances to the place: one that leads you to the bar and has a weird/awkward path to the what is the front of the restaurant and the other is a door that brings you to the front of the restaurant where a hostess is located. Needless to say, we entered through the awkward door. The Pros: — Menu is straightforward. No nonsense, fluffy language or fancy descriptions. — Prices are reasonable for the quality of food — Ryan’s order: Whole Belly Clams came on a huge plate with fries. These were tasty. — The appetizer: Clams Casino — these were tasty and the right amount for a light app. — Service was good and nice. The Cons: — My chicken parm dish was… weird. While the red sauce was tasty, the batter they used for the chicken(which was similar to what you’d use for fish and chips) just threw off the entire dish. — The price for my Black and Blue beer(Guinness and Blue Moon) was unnecessarily high(came in at $ 7). Yikes. Next time, I think I’ll stick to the seafood options.

Well done atmosphere with great service. The food came out in great time and was of high quality. The salad that most places skimp at or don’t care about was excellent. Not one wilted piece of lettuce or item out of place. The prime rib came out and was also excellent. The place has had a complete redo while still maintaining the items the original Checker club had that gave it a great atmosphere. I would guess that this mostly a brand new building. The old place was not as nice in recent years. I am happy I went back and got to see what I remember from my childhood as a great restaurant. I will say they need to update the background music and lose the B101 radio station. It really didn’t fit with the décor.
