When construction started on this pair of sculptures a few years ago, I admit that I had absolutely no idea what was happening. It made no sense. Just metal… and they were erected pretty quickly, finished around the time the Eastside Streetcar opened up. But apparently had nothing to do with that. Wait, what? It’s ART?! Well, why didn’t you say so?! I get it now, and it’s pretty rad. I make it a point to walk by these structures often, looking up through the iron at the clouds in the evening. The official title of the pieces are«Inversion: Plus/Minus», that sit near the bases of the Morrison and Hawthorne bridges. They were created and installed by architects Annie Han and Daniel Mihalyo, and represent the buildings that were once there, now just ghosts of their former selves. The negative space one is my favorite. Take an extra look next time you’re driving past… they’re pretty cool.
