This is a quaint little place that always seems consistent with the food. The sushi is fresh. The wasabi even fresher. The tempura is light and crisp(kid approved) as well as the Japanese staple… chicken teriyaki. The prices are bit steep but well worth it. There is no skimping on quality! There is a well lit, large parking lot behind the restaurant and usually never a wait for a table. We have taken out of town guests here and all have really liked the food and atmosphere.

Shiki occupies a slot in a strip-mall fronting Foster. It feels newish, with earth colored walls, wood and black formica. There’s a small sushi bar, and booths and tables scattered around. We sat at the bar, which has stools that swivel so you don’t have to drag them around. I don’t speak Japanese, so I’m just guessing that’s what the two sushi chefs were speaking. The way the young guy barked at the old guy, and the terror on the old guy’s face, convinced me he was the dishwasher — pressed into sushi chef service during the rush. The sushi was good, but the fish was cut pretty thin, and the specialty rolls didn’t resemble their glamor shots on the menu. We ordered a «Salmon Explosion» roll that turned out to be more of an implosion. The Spider roll was quite good however. It wasn’t bad sushi, but it was priced like really good sushi — which it wasn’t.

Always looking for a new place to go for sushi. We walked in and headed for the sushi bar. Perused our menus to find our favs. One thing we did notice right off the bat was the prices were a little steep. Took that in to consideration. They had a special on the menu where you could pick a particular sushi roll that came with miso and a fresh salad for 4.95 though. Liked that. Also they had really nice color pics of their«Signature rolls» so we had to sample one of those as well. Those were the ones in particular that seemed a little high priced. Ordered our food. I got me my cold sake as usual and the hubby got his beer. There was one guy at first working on the front line and this sweet older gentleman came out of the kitchen to give him a hand. They looked a little overwhelmed and cute at the same time as they put the sushi rolls together. At any rate, they delivered fairly quickly for the most part. The salad was actually really special as the greens were on the unusual side, very tasty, and the dressing was wonderful. Miso was your usual I thought. Hard to mess that up. We got a few of our rolls pretty fast. Bummer on that so called«Signature roll» though. Size does matter and it was so not happening here. And for the price. hello? That was pretty much the way it went the rest of the time. The cuts seemed pretty lightweight. For the most part the sushi itself was A OK but nothing that went out of the park.

One of the few real Japanese restaurants in Portland. Seafood nabe during the winter is so satisfying with the ponzu sauce. Sashimi is always fresh.

Hidden gem is right! Amazingly fresh fish(freshest I have had in quite some time), great cuts of sashimi, and just all around good quality for a great price. Friendly owners who speak Japanese. We especially liked the tuna, white tuna, and the 105 roll. Will be back to try more. I saw that other Japanese patrons had the udon, so I may have to try some udon or ramen next time too!

I’m now on my fourth visit to Shiki, and I can say they’re pretty solid. Excellent tempura, well crafted sushi(which is bite sized, like I prefer) that uses fresh fish. The rice has been consistently excellent. The owners are friendly, if a bit apprehensive of the neighbors though. I encourage everyone to go in there and make them feel welcome.

This place is great. They have a great grilled stuffed avocado, I know it sounds strange, but just get it. You’ll be pleasantly surprised. Cheap rolls, nice people and a nice atmosphere! What more can you ask for in a Sushi place? The store is one of those 10-table type places, and it’s tucked away at the end of a small strip mall, so it’s a little hard to find. Well worth the drive. Have fun!

After driving by this place a couple of times I decided to give it a try. WOW, was I pleasantly surprised! Nice clean atmosphere, friendly staff, and VERY reasonably priced. The five stars are for the fresh fish, as fresh as you will find in PDX, period. Any fresher and you would have to still be on the boat. Try the 105 roll and Avocado boat. And as a wheelchair user, I found the table heights just right and two regulation parking spaces in back.

I love the Sake here and the sushi is always fresh. I don’t understand why when i was here i saw a lot of people order coke with their sushi lol Is that a new way to eat sushi? Don’t be surprise if you ever see that when you visit this place because i’ve seen it a few times. I always order the sweet and spicy lily roll. They don’t have this where I live and this roll is very interesting. You can feel your mouth burning and eyes watery if you add in the wasabi with this roll.

Shiki, is a great place to eat sushi, they have signature sushi that i never tried before, really friendly people, and the owners are working at the restaurant, serving you and cooking, so you get great service and quality food. They have promotions all the time, and they send it by text message!, amazing! I always forget stupid coupons at home, you just have to text the word«shiki» to 69302 and you get a coupon on your phone, wich you show it to redeem I really like this place, and there’s always parking on the back, which i hate about the restaurants in downtown. I truly recommend it!

Still craving the sweet potato tempura sushi rolls from this place! Tempura was light and crispy, and we liked it so much we ordered it on the side as well. We also tried the house special«avocado boat» which was excellent. Tried a few salmon sushi rolls as well. We just kept ordering stuff! Prices are great with the all-day«happy hour» deals. Service was fast and friendly. The restaurant itself was very clean and a lot bigger than we expected. Clean bathrooms as well. Highly recommend!

The hubby and I checked this place out a couple weeks ago on a Friday and just missed happy hour. No biggie there — we were coming in for dinner anyway. It was relatively busy but we were seated quickly but by the time we left the place was maybe 1⁄3 full. We ordered some sake and got busy figuring out what to order. We ended up ordering a dinner and some sushi al a carte. The dinner was the karaage chicken which came with cucumber salad, tempura and miso soup. We ordered a some nigiri(salmon, albacore, saba), the 105 roll, the philly roll and a couple more things I can’t remember right now. Miso soup was the standard fare… a few, tiny pieces of tofu and a sprinkle of green onions. Seems like most places skimp on the miso soup(only my mama makes stellar miso soup). 10 minutes later we received the philly roll and it was pretty good. About 10 – 15 minutes after that, the dinner was served in a cute bento box. Our waitress said the rest of our order would be out shortly. The cucumber salad was ok(too sweet), the karaage chicken was ok, the tempura needed to be fried harder! I hate limp tempura and ours probably could have used another minute in the fryer. Blah. So it took about 5 – 10 minutes for the hubby and I to tear thru the bento box and the philly roll, we were excited for the rest of our sushi to arrive. Well, it took another 10 minutes to get the rest of our sushi! Apparently«shortly» means different things to different people. I normally don’t care when food is brought to the table dish-by-dish upon completion but 10 minutes of waiting inbetween is freakin’ annoying. Our server knew that all the waiting was a problem and she only issued us a «sorry». I was ½ tempted to have her bag up our sushi but we all know that kind of food is meant to be eaten right away so we stayed and finished up our meal. The 105 roll was excellent, the nigiri was meh. We received 2 pieces of salmon that were cut horrendously and were sinewy and gross. The albacore was tasteless and dry. Overall I wish I didn’t order any nigiri. We probably won’t be back.

The best sushi in Portland, period. Amazingly fresh, and the signature rolls are awesome. Happy hour on sushi from 3 to 6 and 8 to 10!

A definite meh. Combination plate lukewarm. Greasy soggy tempura. Overcooked tonkatsu. Took an incredibly long time to get the sushi, and it was 6 p.m. on a Friday with only 3 tables full. The sushi was very fresh, though, and the 105 roll rocked… but really tiny portions of sushi. Service was excellent, however, and our waitress kept our tea and water filled. I guess I’m just spoiled by the burrito-sized rolls at Saburo’s(totally worth the wait).

Sorry, Takahashi, but Shiki has replaced you as my fave sushi place. THE freshest rolls EVER. I couldn’t believe how good they were. Comfortable atmosphere that fits very well with the classiness of the sushi and staff. Didn’t find them overly friendly when we strolled in with our babe, but they seemed pleased to have us after realizing our baby didn’t make a peep.

We tried Shiki last week and were *very* impressed with the food. The rolls were beautifully made and presented(we got the Caterpillar and Spicy Tuna) and the sushi ingredients were very fresh and flavorful. I intended to get a signature roll, like the 105 or the Salmon Explosion, but we were too full to order more. We’ll definitely be coming back for some of their specialty rolls. We ordered a bowl of gyoza ramen for our toddler and she enjoyed it very much. The gyoza dumplings were delicious and tasted freshly made and cooked. The place is very clean and the service was friendly and helpful.
