Third Rail Repertory Theatre

This mid size company consistently turns out thoughtful, imaginative and riveting theater. Their choices of plays are ones off the beaten path, and consistently give us things to talk about the next day. The acting is top notch! We see a lot of plays, but this company is our favorite, we are never disappointed.
They also sponsor national live theater from London. Not the same as live theater, of course, but a great opportunity to see world class theater.

Productions from London’s National Theater Live are screened by Third Rail, now at Imago Theater. Much as I love live theater, I find that there’s much to be said for viewing the action from its optimal vantage point. Top notch talent in all departments, also entr’acte interviews at an affordable price. Age appropriateness to be assessed on an individual basis.

Besides quality theater, Third Rail offers the remarkable National theater live productions from London. They are not to be missed and you are supporting Third Rail too. Next up is Helen Mirren in The Audience… up for a Bafta. Today was Alan Bennett’s People. Splendid.

Went and saw ‘Collapse’ today at the Winningstad.
Seating is still too cramped, but it was much better than it was for ‘The Pain and the Itch’. The set was very creative and the seating arrangement very up close to the action.
There were some empty seats today. This was fortunate for us, but really too bad as Third Rail definitely has a real winner with ‘Collapse’.
All four actors did an outstanding job in this play. The writing is tight and often both comical and intense at the same time. Only first-​class acting and great direction can pull this off without messing it up. It helps a lot to have a good play to begin with, and ‘Collapse’ is certainly that. Everything we saw today both on stage and behind the set was superb.
We were really disappointed when we saw ‘The Pain and the Itch’, but we have discussed it at some length and we agree that the very tight and uncomfortable seating in the Winningstad had much to do with that. Third Rail rarely misses. This time seeing ‘Collapse’ we were both quite happy we went to see this play and would recommend it to anyone.

Third Rail just moved from the World Trade Center to the Winninstad Theatre.
The Winninstad is an amazing Theatre and is perfect for the cutting edge performances and stage sets that TRR can produce.
My only disappointed was discovering that as a student, I can save more by buying tickets individually over buying the season package’s.they really need to fix that.
Otherwise, great production, great group, great selection of plays and always a great time.

We saw «The Pain and the Itch» and thought it was a very well-​executed production. Great cast all-​around and spot-​on direction that guided us through the very intense, provocative and twisted (albeit laugh-​out-​loud funny) script.

I don’t get out to many plays here in town. It is rare that something I actually want to see comes here and I’m definitely NOT a musical person.
Enter David Mamet. I’m a big fan. I sound like a giddy teenager. Or not. When I heard that Third Rail was putting on a production of American Buffalo I had to be there. Happily some friends were already planning on going so we all went together. How convenient.
I had no idea there was even a theatre at the World Trade Center. Why would I? Also, when I think of the World Trade Center, I think of the Twin Towers, but that is irrelevant to this review. Back to it.
The theatre was very small. This is a good thing. Made the production that much more intimate. It is pretty much the same as seeing live music in a small setting as opposed to a stadium of some sort. You almost feel like they are performing specifically for you.
Now that I know that this company exists, I will keep my eyes out for their schedule. If they do the solid work they did on this play and bring plays from other playwrights that I enjoy, I don’t see any reason why I won’t return.

We went the other week to see the Third Rail Repertory Theatre perform at the World Trade Center downtown. I am pretty sure this is their normal location.
The play was called «The Lying Kind». They perform in an intimate theater with very comfortable seats and the play was hilarious. The whole audience was laughing and having a great time. Single tickets are all under $ 30 and if you buy a subscription it’s cheaper. We have friends that had a subscription last year so we went again and got one for this year. Really happy we did after only one play. There are three plays total this year and if they are even half as good as this one we will get our money’s worth.
It’s great to check out the local talent of both actors and writers in a great venue. I highly recommend checking them out!
