The buttermilk bar is life changing! I’m not a huge donut fan and I’ve eaten three donuts from here in one sitting. The donut sundae is also DELICIOUS! Ask for the buttermilk bar warmed up and a scoop of the salted caramel peanut ice cream on top. My favorite donuts are the buttermilk, the buttermilk banana, and the old fashioned blueberry — but honestly they’re all amazing.

Voodoo is way overrated — this places beats them by a long shot! Some of the best donuts in Portland!

Well it’s been a while since my first review of this Tonalli’s(vs. the one in Vancouver) and let me correct my WroNGneSs! Hands down this ones definitely a Winner! Not ONLY is there consistency in variety(Vancouver location never seems to have donuts. .unless it’s at their 6am opening .uggh) the customer service from the girls here is genuinely friendly. .from the moment you waltz thru the door. make your selection and settle up your bill. Nice Friendly services.. Thank you! We make this trip about once a week just to share this yummy goodness with the peeps in the office.. Thanks Tonalli’s. always a pleasure! Keep Unilocaling!

Maple bar is usually my go to so I was excited to try their bacon sprinkled maple bar. Unfortunately, they were out. :( However, my disappointment soon turn to excitement after taking a bite of Maple Fried banana bar! So decadent! Old fashioned and raspberry filled donuts were also delicious! A dozen disappeared in the blink of an eye between the six of us. Blue star have their place in my heart but Tonallis certainly have made their mark! Thank you Unilocalers for leading me to Tonallis! Now, I have done my part. Your turn… Go have some donuts already. :)

Yay for ice cream! Although donuts are apparently the priority here, ice cream is what was necessary. Umpqua ice cream, which is what they serve here, is really good, but that being stated, yes I know this isn’t like S&S, Cloud City or all the other places in town that create the wonky flavors that people line up for. This is just good, simple ice cream and well, it costs a whole lot less than some of the other places in town. Of course, I’m not knocking them, because I do enjoy those spots immensely. In fact I was actually heading to S&S on Alberta when I realized that I was by Tonalli’s and I’d never been in. If you’re a donut person then they have what you need in sugary goodness. I however, don’t go out of my way for them, but ice cream? You betcha. A two scoop cup was only $ 4, other places will get you that for a single. Value folks, value. And this was no small cup of ice cream, check the photo, it was close to a pint of the wonderful frozen milk. The woman was heavy-handed… not a bad thing here. I can see why so many of my Unilocal compatriots have graced these doors. If you don’t feel like a line is in your future, then here’s a great alternative. Enjoy.

When I first walked into Tonaili’s, I knew what I was getting myself into. This part of Portland has been known to one up other food joints just by the wonderful atmosphere and the #communitynotcompetition motto. I typically base my review over my favorite donuts; buttermilk, glazed, and the apple fritter. I wasn’t surprised. It was definitely worth coming back for more! If you prefer a donut place with great workers and donuts, stop by whenever an opportunity arises!

I really, really wanted to love this place but I just didn’t. I am always in search of the next best donut and since they have a huge selection of donuts, fritters, croissants, and breakfast sandwiches I thought this would be the place. (They also have a whole ice cream section) I went here two Different times. Because I just really wanted to give it another chance. I got an old fashioned donut. The edges were way to crispy and the donut was dry. When I ate the French crueller, it felt like my tongue was coated in fat after I finished eating it. The sprinkle donut and blueberry cake were just okay nothing special. The people who work here are super friendly so that is a plus. It’s not as good as the other donut shops around Portland but I don’t know maybe 3rd times the charm?

I sampled a half dozen donuts: apple fritter, blueberry fritter, buttermilk bar, maple buttermilk bar, apple cider old-fashioned, crumb old-fashioned. The apple fritter wasn’t anything special, but the blueberry fritter had a really nice, strong blueberry flavor. The fritters and the bars were all too oily for my taste. The buttermilk bar had a nice, buttery dough. I didn’t get to try the maple one(someone swiped it before I could get to it). The apple cider old-fashioned was interesting. The flavor was strong, but was sour, which I didn’t like. I would say the crumb old-fashioned was my favorite of the lot; it had a really nice texture and flavor.

Get the apple pie stuffed donut. It tastes like if a delicious donut, apple pie, and entenmann cake had a sweet baby together. They also have donut sundaes, which sounds delicious but at 10 am my brain said no.

This place has the most delicious donuts I have found. The old fashioned blueberry donut is amazing, as are the buttermilk bars. They’re dense and buttery cake is saturated in sweet frosting. So addicting, and dirt cheap. All the fritters I have had there are pretty damn beautiful too.

Pretty good local shop. Parking is street and can be a little difficult if it’s a busy time of day. We tried 2 of their ice cream flavors which are Umpqua brand. I thought the birthday cake way waaaay too much but my husband’s cherry was very tasty. The line was long and moved very slow. I might give it another shot.

Portland has a lot of great donuts. I thought I’d be hard-pressed to find a bad one. But I was mistaken. These are worse than even grocery store donuts. The chocolate glazed and custard-filled were gross. The dough was flavorless and old tasting and the custard tasted fake. One star for the yummy Apple fritter though.

Tonallis is the cute donut shop that made me rethink my experience at Voodoo. When you enter Tonallis, you get this warm classic café vibe. There is an awesome section of donuts and pastries along with a variety of ice cream and sorbet. We were the only customers at the time, and the person at the counter was really great. They let me sample the bubblegum and mint chocolate chip ice cream to decide which I wanted. I went with the mint chocolate chip, and my girlfriend got a scoop of Marion berry sorbet. As for donuts, we got two chocolate, a maple, and a blueberry fritter. Let me tell you, these donuts are amazing. There’s an amazing crunchy outside and soft inside with the donuts and fritter both. In comparison to Voodoo, this place seems to have better donuts to me. Give this adorable place a try!

With my donut expectations going to Portland, this place did not miss the mark. I went to Vodoo a few days prior, and it is no match. I got a half dozen assorted and each one was a flavor, sugar, melt in your mouth experience! I did not have high hopes for the buttermilk bar. I thought it would be heavy and greasy, but instead it was light, crispy, and perfect! I will be coming back next time for sure!

I will take this place over Voodoo and Blue Star any day. Except I live pretty far from Tonallis, and Voodoo still makes donuts that allow me to get my fix. Blue Star is reserved for when I have company in town and they have their hearts set on trying it. The food spots on Alberta are a big reason why I’m a fan of that district in general, and this place makes sure of that. Given they have the feel of a mom-and-pop donut shop, they make some delicious donuts. I had to try the maple deep fried banana, and it was everything I hope for, and then some. Their prices are very reasonable, and the service is pretty good here too. OK, honestly Voodoo is not bad, as I go there every so often. Not the downtown one though. I just shake my head every time I see the long line. However, if you’re in the area, get these donuts. Or go to Pip’s. Different kind of donuts there, but a good option too.

I have only ever gotten donuts here. THIS should be the place everyone comes too — not the overrated VooDoo. The prices are SUPER cheap and the donuts are great. The lady who runs the place(Anna?) is really nice. I like the cruller and the buttermilk bars — also the old fashioned, oh and the plain old glazed — well, they have all been really good.

Cute old school donut place without the gimmicks or crazy lines at Voodoo(although the maple bacon donut kicks ass). They have a ton of different donut varieties at Tonalli’s(including a version of the maple bacon that I didn’t get to try), and they also sell ice cream, coffee, and shakes. We got there around 3pm on a Friday– it wasn’t that busy at that time, and there was still a large variety of donuts available. We tried: –Buttermilk Pie w/Blueberry Filling($ 1.35) & Buttermilk Bar($ 1.10) [ : YUM! The buttermilk pie was delicious(think the muffin top of the donut world) — I loved the crust the pie had. The blueberry filling seemed like it was canned, and it was on the sweet side, but still really good overall– highly recommended! The buttermilk bar was solid, although also on the sweet side– this wasn’t as good as the pie form though. I probably wouldn’t get this one again. Umpqua Kona Coffee Ice Cream– Yum– the ice cream was really smooth and it had good coffee flavor. If I weren’t so full I would have eaten more ice cream. Overall, I enjoyed my old fashioned style donuts from Tonalli’s, and it was a nice change from the sometimes too inventive flavors. Street parking is available in this area, although it is limited.

When I was younger I loved coming here! Their donuts were always fresh and their customer service has always been above and beyond my expectations. Well, it’s been almost eight years since I’ve been here and nothing has changed! After ordering a maple bar(of course) I realized that they have Heavenly Donuts beat by a land slide! It was so fresh that it melted in my mouth *wipes drool from screen*. Their décor could use some updating and deep cleaning but it’s clean in the right places. I did see some new faces but the only thing that matters is that the quality of their food is the same and their customer service. Alberta has always been a funky street with a bunch of stores and restaurants that make up a weird and lovely neighborhood. So, if you’re in the mood for a sinful treat and some genuine customer service then this is your kind of place! Happy Unilocaling…

Now these are the kind of honest donut shops I will always love. After having tried VooDoo and Blur Star the past couple weeks, a visit to the humble Tonalli’s reaffirms my love for a good, honest, and simple donut. Yes, I will certainly indulge in the not-so-classic blueberry fritter though. And yes, I will also take a «single» order of your Umpqua caramel cone ice cream! The blueberry fritter($ 1.50) was pretty unique. Unlike most other donut shop fritters, the exterior was the familiar crispiness while the innards were like a cake donut. The blueberry was subtle beneath the flavors of the glaze but was there to add a nice touch. I put the«single» in quotes because they give you two scoops($ 2.75)! Definitely can’t complain [=
