People are friendly and breads smelled fresh. It was one of my best welcome back home gifts. Will visit again for sure. My dub hit the spot and then some.

I work in the area and have come here several times for subs. While the subs are very good, I’ve been chastised by the staff several times. I typically go out of my way to be nice to people who work in the food industry, as I know dealing with customers can be difficult. I’ve been told on multiple occasions by different staff that I am «too happy». As though this is some kind of bad thing. I’ve let this slide, as it’s not terribly insulting. I typically get plain subs to avoid the toppings from spoiling as I save half the sandwich for the next day. When I requested this plain sub, I was asked if I would like them to «cut the crusts off, and cut the bread into little triangles». I did not find this funny, and actually found it to be condescending and rude. I feel as though I’ve received enough insulting comments from the staff here and will not be returning. If you want a sub from here, I’d recommend being rude, as that appears to be more their speed, and be ready to be chastised for what kind of sub you order.

I’ve been going to Elsie’s for years The classic Jersey sub shop! If you are in the Red Bank area for lunch, go where the locals go, go to Elsie’s!

I’ve been coming here since I was a kid, no matter what stage of life I’m in I always try to visit Elsie’s when I come see my parents. The number 5(turkey, mayo, and cranberry) is the best sub on the planet… hands down. I haven’t found another sub shop that puts cranberries on their sub yet! The bread is perfect and soft, not stale, and it soaks up all those delicious juices. The sub is put in a plastic sleeve so you don’t make a mess… the perfect system for maximum sub consumption!

To tell you the truth, the last time I had a sub here was about 1964, but I can tell you young whippersnappers that the subs from 1959(the year they opened) to 1964 were the stuff that dreams are made of. I wonder if the prices have gone up? I remember walking out of Elsie’s with a half of a number 1 for like 80 cents. Next time I swing through town, I’m picking up the turkey with cranberry. Out in western NJ, no one knows how the hell to make one… Got to go — Matlock and the Golden Girls are coming on.

My husband got the chicken Cordon bleu sub and it was the most disgusting sandwich I’ve ever seen. There were small pieces of soggy breaded chicken that didn’t even cover the entire piece of bread. Also, the ham was rolled up and had the Swiss cheese pieces stuck inside. There was no lettuce or tomato and nothing was toasted. It literally looks like a five-year-old put it together. So sorry we spent $ 10 on it. If that’s what they offer for that Sandwich choice then they should just take it off the menu. Really disappointed and not sure we will go back judging from that horrific tasteless mess. Only reason for 1 star was my gyro sub was OK, no sauce and it was kind of blah but even that was waaay better than husbands sub as it was edible.

Soooo so good! I have been on an italian sub kick lately, trying out all the options in the area. Elsie’s is for sure the best I have had, the ratio of bread to meat is just perfect, everything is so fresh, toppings are great. When you bite in to it, your whole mouth just sings, everything works together perfectly. I get the #16 italian with extra hot peppers, I would love to try other things on the menu but every time I go I just gravitate to this amazing sandwich!

Maybe I ordered the wrong thing? Meats weren’t top shelf, bread was lacking, service not great– but def. cheap… I suppose I’ll try again– place seems to be a local institution.

Elsie’s has great subs, but their customer service is in question, and this is in reference to one employee, who very rudely returned my change back to me one afternoon and was upset with me because I asked her for more than just one single napkin with my whole sub sandwich. I was also put off by the prices that seemed to vary day by day, but it was explained to me a few weeks later by one of their other employees… It wasn’t a big deal, but I mentioned it in my initial review but corrected it accordingly. However, the one girl in question, I guess she didn’t like what I had to say, so this employee took the liberty of messaging me back, via Unilocal,a very long letter, full of sarcasm and some bitterness, claiming that my ‘negative energy’ and rude entry(?) was what brought out whatever attitude she may have given me, and that her manager was also ‘put off’ by my ‘behavior’… What she is talking about, I’m not too sure, because Elsie’s food is so good, I’m always so excited when I walk in… this saddens me, because I’ve met both owners, who are a lovely couple. They are engaging and quite friendly, and you would assume that their stellar customer service would rub off on all of their employees, but there is that one in question, and since my first review, I have been back for their amazing subs, maybe a couple times a week with both my husband and co-worker; sometimes we pick up, sometimes we have it delivered, but that stops now. I did not see your message until today, young lady, and I wish I hadn’t; my first review gave this place 4 stars for quality of food, regardless of your little fit. But I have since re-reviewed your place of work. I guess I’ll be eating lunch at Surf Taco twice a week now instead of Elsie’s, because to be quite honest, the thought of walking back in there makes me uncomfortable… customer service is KEY, and you young lady, are lacking in it.

I’ve been to sooo many sub places in Red Bank. I’ve tried that Red Bank Sub Shop, a few different pizza places, and even the new Jersey Mikes, but nothing has come close to this place. I noticed it for the first time today as I passed by, so I decided to stop in. The smell as soon as I walked in was overwhelming, and right away I knew that they had fresh ingredients and high quality food. I was shocked when I noticed the low prices as well. After eating my sub, I was overjoyed to have found a new place to stop for a sub for lunch/dinner. The bread was fresh and soft, the deli meat to cheese ratio was perfect and the bacon was crispy and fresh. Even the mayo tasted homemade. I was definitely pleased with my sub and I urge you to try this place if you have not yet.

Fast and friendly service!(Unlike that other new sub place on Monmouth ave where owner is grumpy, grumpy sour face!). I always get the turkey with cranberry, so I can’t comment on other sandwiches. Those are delicious! Pro tip — cash only!(ATM inside, though)

This is the one of the BEST Jersey Shore Sub Shops you could ever visit. This little shop is tucked away on Monmouth Street in Red Bank, near the Count Basie Theater. They make every thing fresh & to order. I ordered a platter for a party & it was a hit! The egg salad is made to order, the lettuce is so crispy the bread tastes like it just came out of the oven. They even do sub in a tub, the carb free option! So easy to eat on the go or in the park with it being packed in a convenient sandwich bag. They have about 50 choices for subs!!! This place should be featured on Food Network’s Diners Drive ins & Dives.

This is the best sub shop on this or any other planet !!! I’ve been going to Elsie’s since I was13, now I’m 5X. It ain’t about the décor or the parking, it’s about the food, authentic, just like it was 1959 with Elsie back there slicing it up…“you want hot peppers with that ?” ‘you bet I do !!!‘ After this you’ll never walk into a ‘Subway’ again unless you’re takin’ the train… THEBEST !!! I’ve done the research…

Best sub shop around bar none! I have been going here for over 20 years and the food is still great. The sub«system» of the little plastic wraps on each half of the sub are ingenious! I know of no other place that does that. The turkey with cranberry is my favorite. Hope to enjoy Elsie’s for another 20 years!
