I toured Campus Commons recently — along with several other communities — just as they began a big renovation. I entered through the new outdoor patio and entertainment area(because of the construction out front) and I was really pleased to see residents outside visiting under the umbrellas next to the pond. I liked the décor, layout and staff but what struck me most was that it seemed really friendly. The residents outside spoke to us and were obviously friendly with one another. So did several residents that we met in the hallway. Although I am looking for my father — and it’s nice that there are quite a few men here — I thought to myself that it was much different than I expected. It’s well maintained and attractive, but it doesn’t feel like either a hotel or an «old folks’ home.» Some of the residents use walkers, but I also saw a number of them out walking small dogs. The activity list is extensive and I thought the menus looked appealing.(Several residents commented that they liked the food, a good sign.) I noticed that one of the residents had a three-wheel bike on his patio and I’m told that he uses it to bike to nearby grocery stores. If you visit right now, you enter through the side patio area and leave your car with a valet while they re-do the front entrance. They are expanding the lobby and café, and constructing a circular driveway entrance. The renderings look great. It’s supposed to be done this summer. The owners are obviously putting money into keeping the community fresh. I’m told the card room just off the entrance was just redecorated and they’re obviously putting money into the outdoor and indoor renovation. I’d recommend visiting, especially since they have some new move-in specials that make it an even better value(it’s kind of in between on price — not the high end but not the low end).

We toured here the other day. Most of the common areas looked pretty nice but the dining room had tables too close together for residents to move around, especially those using walkers. The dining room also had a musty odor. Lunch and dinner are included but with a VERY limited selection. Eating hours are also limited. Apartments do have full(small) kitchens. Apartments have thick plush carpeting which makes it difficult for those using walkers to move around the apartments. This complex is owned by the same people as Winding Commons in Carmichael. I believe the costs are about the same at both but this facility is far inferior to the other.
