Fish was a reheated old piece of overcooked fish. The 5 medium shrimp about the same, dry & overcooked. Not good at all. Bud Jones used to be pretty good… not so much now. You want good fish go to MK Davis on S. Flores or any Sea Island seafood restaurant. Remember fresh is always best. Anyone remember the old Klondike Restaurant in Lytle many years ago??? How about Christie’s on Broadway in San Antonio many years ago? Those were the good old days! Freshness & quality was the rule back then.

I LOVE buddy J’s. The wait staff is great, food is delicious and it’s on the southside. I always have a hard time choosing between the enchiladas, the chicken fried steak, or the fish. The décor is a little outdated, but I don’t go for the ambiance. I go for the delicious food. I ALWAYS leave stuffed. If you haven’t been to Bud Jones, you are missing out!

I’ve been coming to Bud Jones since I was a kid and I always remember the food being good and tasty and the service being fast and friendly. I’d say the food isn’t as good as I remember as a kid, perhaps my palate is a bit more discerning as the refined adult that I am today(HA! I lie a lot) but I do feel like the food isn’t as good as it used to be. I would like to see the quality of the food improve enough to make me drive that way more often. One plus that I didn’t know is that they do have breakfast on weekends and its pretty darn good!

It had been years since I’ve eaten here ! I just had an awesome lunch with my mom. We both had their delicious enchiladas and were very pleased ! The hospitality and friendliness of the staff including our waitress was SUPERB!!!

This place is nostalgic for me… That’s why it’s getting three stars. My grandparents love to take us there and the food is good. Good fried fish and great thousand island dressing. Service is alright, but thats not what is the killer. There is a saying that goes… «You can tell what a restaurant’s kitchen looks like based on the way their bathrooms are kept.» Yeah… There bathrooms are gross. Toilet paper on the floor, toilets dirty, floors sticky. I really hope thats not the case with their kitchen. Overall, eat at your own risk.

I had the Ladies CFS and wow. I also asked for both gravys to see which one worked the best. I say the brown was best. It was very savory. The nice part about the CFS was that it was thicker than most without being tough. Most CFS meats are thin to achieve tenderness. I also had the four bean soup and that was surprisingly good. I can see why this place has been a staple for 50 years.

I went to bud jones about 3 weeks ago & was very disappointed. My waitress was really nice. The food tasted & looked like something I used to eat @ the school cafeteria. My chicken fried steak was lukewarm & didn’t taste that great. The mashed potatoes seemed to come out of a 5 min box that I could of gotten @ heb. Very dissatisfied to say the least

I’ve been searching for The Great Chicken-fried Steak since I’ve moved back to Texas. After a visit here, I’m still looking. To quickly break down my meal: App of onion rings: Just so-so. Batter tasted of fried. Yes, just fried. Which isn’t always a bad thing, but this was bland, tasteless, and overcooked. Even the onion inside had no flavor because the rings were overcooked. Green salad: Way overdressed. Tasted like a bowl of salad dressing, not salad. Side of fries: The power to the restaurant must have been cut off midway through cooking because that’s how these tasted: limp, greasy, and half-cooked. CFS: The cream gravy didn’t taste like cream at all. In fact, I think it probably didn’t have any and was made only with water. The steak was overly battered, which I can excuse, since I like some fried batter. But since the meat didn’t have much flavor to it, altogether it just ended up tasting like fried batter. Overall, a definite disappointment except for the service. Our server was swamped but she checked in regularly and came across as genuinely nice and caring. If not for the good service, this would have rated only one star.

Came here during lunch hour around noon and was seated very quickly. Waitress came and took our orders and the food came out in about 10 minutes. I got the fish plate which tasted good and was very inexpensive. Our waitress was very attentive and kind. Would definitely recommend coming here. The place makes you feel like you’re eating a home cooked meal.

We stopped by for lunch today. The hostess and waitress were both very friendly. Our waitress was also attentive. We started with fried pickles. The serving was large and the pickles were good. We had the chicken fried steak, fried fish, corn, and Canadian cheese soup. Everything was good except for the chicken fried steak. There was absolutely ZERO seasoning. It was bad. I would eat there again if in the neighborhood, but I would not order the chicken fried steak again.

Bud Jones is a well known restaurant my boyfriend and I go to occasionally. We love the chicken fried steak enough to drive across town. I think we would go more often if it weren’t so far. I’m giving Bud Jones 5 stars for the OUTSTANDING service we received from our waiter JOHN. The restaurant was busy, so it took a while to get seated. Once seated John was quick to take our drink orders, and keep them topped off. We didn’t have to ask for a refill at all. There were three of us and we all ordered the chicken fried steak, each with different sides. He carefully took our orders down and made sure we received the right meals. He checked on us frequently, which I appreciated. He was so thorough with making sure we had everything we needed, he even got us to go cups of tea when we left.

RODENT-chewed cracker package was given too us. My boyfriend was about to put in his soup when he noticed each package just had one cracker on the inside. then we saw the rodent holes and left immediately. We just wanted something local on the south side, but the prices are very high considering most of the menu is fried and that the bathrooms are gross. Ignore the pretty«Clean Restrooms» sign. Lie. slow service too. Even before the rodent crackers, we had already decided never to go back.

Bud Jones has been around since 1958. So have I, and although I don’t eat there often I have been going there for quite a few years. No one will ever mistake Bud’s for fine dining, but it has always been a consistently good choice for basic fare. I brought my mother along, and here’s the scoop from today’s visit. Service — 5 Stars We arrived at 5:00PM, so just ahead of the evening crowd which started to file in shortly after. We were promptly seated, and the waitress appeared after just a few seconds to take our drink order, which she then brought out after only a couple of minutes. We opted for an order of Super Nachos as an appetizer, and I ordered«The Largest Enchiladas in Town» while my mother selected the Country Fried Steak. The nachos came out quickly. Once we finished them the empty plates were immediately cleared away and our main orders arrived just moments after. The waitress was friendly, polite and attentive. Food — 4 Stars The Super Nachos were tasty. Perhaps just a little on the soggy side, but not overly so. The Jalapenos were a bit too mild for my taste. Could have used a little more kick The Enchiladas were very good, and the portion size lived up to it’s name. Not sure if they are actually the largest in town, but they were enough to fill me up. The rice and beans were average. My only complaint would be the tortillas. Hard and dry. Mom reports the CFC was good, but nothing outstanding. She liked the cole slaw, the fries were OK but a bit soggy. Total cost $ 36.79 +tip for a large appetizer, 2 main courses and 2 drinks. Maybe I’m out of touch, but seems just a bit high for Bud Jones fare. $$ Ambiance/Décor — 3 stars What can I say, it’s Bud Jones. The building is old, it’s been through a fire and a few remodels. It’s clean and functional, and someone actually played Pink Floyd’s «Shine On You Crazy Diamond» on the jukebox. That and a plate of enchiladas were enough ambiance for me. Till next year sometime.

I had better fish previous time before, but today it was so so, maybe because it was a Friday. I order fried pickles the worst I ever had the pickles were so soggy with used oil, so terrible. Don’t order the fried pickles.

I like this place. Yes, it’s a but rundown(OK, maybe a lot rundown), but they still crank out some pretty decent food at very reasonable prices. The service has always been good. The wait staff is friendly and responsive. If you have bad thoughts, rethink them.

Tried this place for lunch. Wanted something different from the places i usually frequent. So i came in for some home-style cooking. I went with the Bud’s Basket. A fried fish fillet, fried shrimp and fries. The fish and shrimp were both good and served nice and hot. The fries were served under the fish and shrimp and were warm but not hot like i like my fries. It was OK just nothing special to make me rush back.
