Expected more based on reviews. I ordered sesame chicken lunch and wonton soup. The wonton soup was bland but discovered adding soy sauce made it just about perfect besides the wonton. The wonton seemed uncooked. The sesame chicken was a little too salty for my taste. Best part was probably the fried rice. But the lady who gave me my to go order was very friendly. Either way, it all depends on your taste buds but it was either too bland or too salty for me.

FOOD: –Hunan Beef: 2⁄5 –General Chow Chicken: 0⁄5 –Hot and Sour soup: 2⁄5 –Crab Wontons: 1⁄5 –Fried Rice(served on side of meal): 2⁄5 The Hunan Beef was okay, but I’ve definitely had way way better because the meat was just plain overcooked and chewy, hard to bite into, and the flavors were average. The vegetables weren’t as crispy as I like them, and didn’t seem all that fresh. The general chow chicken was just plain awful, to where my friend ended up having to throw it away because it tasted funky. My roommate who also ordered the General Chow, received some strange chicken that was grey on the inside after she bit into it, which later ended up making her a little sick(nothing major, but still). Hot and sour soup was very poorly balanced and mostly just plain sour, and the crab wontons were overpowered by stale and rancid oil. I understand that typical Chinese American cuisine is not usually something that is meant to be highly sophisticated, nutritious, or cooked with high quality ingredients. However, it is possible to at least still serve fresh protein and vegetables and provide some decent flavors… OH, and also to NOT make your customers sick with unsanitary food. Honestly, if I wanted overly greasy and questionable meat cooked in stale oil, I would just head on over to Panda Express.

WHAT I ORDERED: General Chow Chicken($ 7.50) If you’re looking for just good ol’ Americanized Chinese food(I get these cravings all the time), then this is an OK place to go. It could just be the dish I ordered, but my friend also got Hunan Beef and was disappointed(not because the of the beef itself, but of the crab wontons, fried rice) FOOD: –GENERALCHOWCHICKEN: The chicken is equivalent to orange chicken but had a different sauce. With the first couple bites, I actually liked the chicken and just chocked it up to me eating a typical orange chicken dish. It wasn’t until I started eating further and actually cut up a few pieces that I see my chicken meat oddly gray. I was kinda disturbed by the meat color and some of the pieces started to taste too chewy — as though it was uncooked or old. –FRIEDRICE: Just your general fried rice you would get at Chinese restaurants, but this fell on the more bland side unfortunately. –CRABWONTON: The dish comes with two! They were on the smaller side and lacked filling. –HOTANDSOURSOUP: This was probably my favorite part of the whole entrée. Although the soup lacked spicy flavor, the flavor was good and the best part is that they gave us a TON of crispy wontons to put in it. SERVICE: My friends and I picked up food to go and the service was extremely pleasant! We asked for more crispy wontons to put in our soup and they were more than accommodating!

I’m glad I saw this restaurant listed. Wanted some good Chinese food and saw pretty good ratings. I ended up driving past this place twice before I found it. Ordered the General Chow special and it was really good! It came w/egg drop soup w/fried rice and an egg roll. I might have to stop by a few more times before I head back home. Great food, very friendly staff. If you want Chinese Food, GOHERE!

First of all there is a waitress named Mary who is very nice and attentive. She’s even gone as far to memorize my wife and I’s favorite dish so that we do not need any menus. The food is delicious and hot and fresh. And the environment is pleasant. Oh, did I forgot to mention the portions are abundant. Finally feel free to customize your order. For example I order cashew chicken with only mushrooms and onions sautéed in a black bean sauce. What are you waiting for hurry up and get you some!

I’ve had to try a lot of duds before finding this spot. The food was amazing! I’m originally from California and I’ve always had amazing choices/experiences when it comes to Chinese American Cuisine but not so much since moving to San Antonio… Until now. Peng’s was amazing! They had a great menu and excellent lunch and dinner specials. The owner told me that she’s been in business for 30 years and that she enjoys the San Antonio lifestyle and loves being able to share her food with the community. Service was very prompt and the food came out HOT! We ordered the following: General Chow Chicken Sweet and Sour Pork Egg Rolls Egg Drop Soup Fried Rice All Meat Egg Fu Yong Everything was fresh and piping hot. It was so delicious and the tastes reminded me of my favorite LA haunts. This is a great spot for small groups or a fun date night. Clean and steady foot traffic. They also offer take out services if you desire a night in.

Always trying different asian food around the city, and so far Pengs is one of my favorites. The only other place I like this much is Formosa, and still they both are quite different from each other. Fried chicken plates are the best, rice tastes awesome, eggrolls are huge and tastey and the soup(Both eggdrop and hot and sour) are really flavorful. I’ve been here 3 times in 2 weeks. Today is the second time I have taken my girlfriend, she usually gets pissy when I mention wanting chinese, but after having Pengs the first time, she actually asked ME if I wanted to go. Any chinese that gets my girlfriend wanting to go is good with me.

This place is tiny but the food is so good. Was craving Chinese food bad. Ordered the lemon chicken dinner special and waited no more than 5 minutes before it was done. Everything was fresh and hot. Will be returning.

Finally a place my husband and I agree on! Read the Unilocal reviews and decided to give it a try… The food was piping hot and fresh. We had the lemon chicken, General Chow’s and crab rangoon. I liked the lemon chicken, but the General Chow’s wasn’t spicy enough for my husbands taste. Definitely worth trying.

This place is seriously a hidden gem! The prices are very affordable and the food is great. Don’t let the low number of reviews fool you. We were craving Chinese and found this place on Unilocal. It’s nothing special inside but the two ladies who work there are so nice and very attentive. We will definitely be back soon!

I love how tiny this restaurant is. The woman at the counter commented that she’d never seen us before, so clearly this is a little hidden gem that people from around the neighborhood frequent. My hubby and I promptly told her she’d get to know us soon. We will be back. We want to be those regulars. The specials are great. You get good portions, a soup and an egg roll. My husband ordered a specialty, the orange chicken. His portion was huge, which is great. We both loved it and we’ll enjoy eating it again tomorrow, because we all know Chinese leftovers for breakfast is the best.

Very decent Chinese fast food. Average price of dinner meal is $ 7 so also decently priced for what you get. I order the chicken with broccoli since its my fave meal and you get a bunch of rice and copious amounts of broccoli which I love.

Nice, cheap price good food made fresh. Service is good. Go for the food, ambience is not attractive but very utilitarian.
