I got the turkey pesto and a peach tea, it was so delicious, the paninis were a great size also! My sister got the breakfast panini, that also was delicious! And great service and cute spot! Super chill.

A very clean, small coffee shop with delicious food. Excellent fresh ground pour over coffee is spectacular. Baristas are very friendly. Outdoor seating is cool, shady, and quiet. Tough to find anything bad about this place. It’s…perfect.

Service was great, very polite and friendly staff. Panini had great presentation, good size, they cut it in half for us to share and brought it out to us. Coffee was great we had two types — Americano & cold brew– and both were amazing, not bitter at all. We tried the peanut butter cookie and oatmeal chocolate chip cookie, our favorite was oatmeal chocolate but both were good. They have plenty of seating in front and back. It is tastefully decorated and really peaceful. They have sunny and shady, which is great if you’re hot and cold like us. Prices are reasonable. Visit this place, you will like it!

I’ve been to this place a few times with a dog I sit nearby and thoroughly enjoy it here. The paninis(specifically the turkey chipotle) are delicious, the service is friendly and fast and their outdoor seating area(only outdoor seating) is lovely and spacious. I’m a big fan! :)

My wife and I moved to Normal Heights about 3 months ago and at this point I think we’ve tried everything on Dos Palmas’ menu. Simply put, we’ve loved all of it. Weekdays it’s usually a delicious cold brew or latte for each of us but on the weekends we’re definitely getting a panini! They have several signature sandwiches, each generously loaded and grilled to perfection. Seriously the best I’ve had since leaving Italy in 2007… The owners, Laura and Val, are super friendly, professional and good for an interesting chat if that’s your thing. The ambiance & décor are upbeat and bright, with frequently updated local artists’ prints/originals displayed on the walls. Don’t forget the beautiful, secluded garden dining area in the back, again, perfect for chilling out or getting some work done as you enjoy the grub. If you’re in the area(or not) I’d say don’t hesitate to check out Dos Palmas Café, you won’t regret it!

This was a great find. It’s usually pretty quiet, they have a couple cute little patios, and the food is fantastic. The owners are extremely friendly too. We’ve now been a handful of times. I love that chipotle sauce, and they have great cold brew. Only issue is they’ve priced us out of lunch a few times. Two sandwiches and two coffees, plus tip, ends up being over $ 30. That’s on the upper range for a sandwich and coffee, and more than we typically like spending on a small lunch. Please start a frequent flier program for a free sandwich or send me coupons or something! That being said, we like the place so much we’ll probably be back every few months this year.

Driving down Adams Avenue I spotted this place, decided to find parking and take a look inside. Immediately I liked it, great vibes, simple and appealing menu and I was in desperate need of coffee and their menu just called my name. I ordered the breakfast panini and The Pig plus two cappuccinos. Cappuccinos were amazing!!! Even my husband who is not a coffee drinker but for some weird reason has been into cappuccinos lately, he approved. The panini’s had a nice crusty bite to them and you can tell they are made with lots of TLC. Every bite has the same amount of ingredients. I hate when it says it has avocado and towards the middle of the sandwich it’s all gone. This not the case here! I will definitely come back to give the other sandwiches a try. I also spotted that they serve smoothies and different flavors of teas. Great service and charming atmosphere.

This cute place is literally right around the corner from where I live. I love going there for brunch and going there to study. Such a great ambiance and the owner is completely amazing. All of the paninis there are delicious but my favorite by far is the turkey chipotle, just because I love me some spice. Their coffee is just as delicious. Definitely my go-to spot!

Yup, same issue like another Unilocaler already posted. Took my coworkers here for the first time and my panini was plain, for $ 8.00? And my coffee was at room temperature. C’mon.

This place is really good, and if it were closer to my place, I would come here everyday. Thankfully they are several blocks from my actual house. The sandwiches here not only look good but they taste great. They are really generous with their avocado and the chipotle sauce is amazing(and not to mention, fairly spicy). The coffee isn’t too bad either and they offer free wifi. Seating is plentiful in both the back and front patio although it is a squeeze inside. Give this place a try. The prices are reasonable, the food is delish, and the servers are super nice!

My favorite coffee place in the area. It’s run by the married couple who work there everyday. They are the epitome of the small business dream. They have awesome drinks that are not too sweet, the sandwiches they make are out of this world and the service is superior to any other coffee shop in north park. Yes, any other coffee shop in north park. Plus, they are super dog friendly with plenty of space for everyone to have their dogs without fights breaking out every minute.

We were in the area and wanted to go eat breakfast and found Backyard Café via Unilocal,so we tried it. Disappointed. The staff was friendly but the food was mediocre. Very plain and easily done at home for cheaper. The thing that disappointed me the most is that it was not busy and our espresso and cappuccino came out room temperature! Tsk. Tsk. Horrible. The ambience was great, a little getaway in the back. A kind of odd location. If you need to use the WC, you need to go and ask for the key. Good place for us to try out, but I doubt I’d be back.

This is more like 3.5 stars, but I’m rounding down to give them something to strive for =) I love little cafes that serve sandwiches and provide free wifi, especially since I enjoy a cup of coffee while doing work on my laptop(and not being a major coffee chain.) Backyard Café is a remodeled small house tucked into the Normal Heights neighborhood, kinda off the beaten path unless you live nearby. I was craving sandwiches after a stroll through Balboa Park and this place is on our way home. Since it’s also really close to Vons(and the fiancé and I needed to grocery shop as well), this was a great lunch spot on a relaxing Sunday. Parking in the neighborhood is easy, and we found lots of ample seating on their patio(both in front and back.) We were greeted immediately upon walking in and the cashier was able to give my fiancé recommendations for sandwiches. They don’t have a huge food selection, as it is first and foremost a coffee/tea shop, but their sandwich options all looked tasty. I went for the turkey pesto while my fiancé chose the turkey chipotle. All their sandwiches are panini style, and come with a choice of bread(we both went for sourdough). I also ordered their tropical peach iced tea. We sat out on the back patio, which has covered or shaded seating throughout. Our food came out quick and hot. I loved their pesto(assuming it was home made?), and the fact that they put a LOT of avocado on the sandwich(most places skimp on that delicious ingredient.) My fiancé’s turkey chipotle was a good combo of sweet and spicy. But I was sad the sandwich didn’t have a side, like chips or soup or even a pickle spear. It felt like something was missing. Pricewise, it was decent for a sandwich, but again wish they offered other sides(even available for purchase!) I would definitely come back to do work and try out their coffee or pastries!

I really loved this place. They have a nice covered front and backyard patio which was especially enjoyable. The décor and menu may be simple but only because they offer only the best! Their iced latte was delicious, not too bitter and not too much milk. As for their panini, I ordered the chicken chipotle panini and let me tell you, that bread was perfectly crispy and soft in all the right places. I find most paninis cutting me in the mouth with overly-toasted bread or the bread falling apart due to too much sauce, but this place was great! The cheese was nicely melted with an irresistible ooey gooey texture; the slices of avocado were fresh; the chipotle sauce was smokey with pepper chunks, but not too spicy. The only reason this place gets 4 stars instead of 5 is that for the price, they should really offer a side with the sandwiches. A little side of chips would really go a long way… For both sandwich and iced latte, I paid $ 13. Kinda steep for a coffee/sandwich shop, no?

This place is well known for their panini’s but I’ve also herd their coffee was quite good. I have yet to have a panini, but their coffee was very good. I’m no coffee connoisseur but had a Colombian pour over, black. It had a lot of flavor and gave me a much needed energy boost mid day. The vibe there was really chill and the barista was really nice. There was lots of cool seating and the front patio in particular was really cool. The back or «backyard» had some decent seating as well. The barista told me that they’re crazy on weekends during brunch, but it was dead mid day on weekday. With dark horse down the road it’s hard to compete coffee wise, but they definitely give them a run for their money.

Overall it was a okay experience. I got the breakfast panini w ham & a small coffee-$ 9.75 total which is on the expensive side to me because I’m broke yo! The staff were friendly. Nice interior & artsy. Free wifi w visible password so you don’t have to ask. My only CRITICISMs is the eggs were too watery which made one side of my panini soggy & lost all its crunch. Cook your eggs longer & use less water!!! & I was expecting carved ham but it looked like it came from a hillshire farm package.

From the frashly made Banana Bread, iced dirty Chai coffee to the turkey chipotle + bacon panini. Everything was fresh and delicious. Their chipotle is sweeter and with a bit more spicy kick — Addictingly good. They have a comfortable patio minus the annoying tiny Flys trying to land on the food.

LOVE! Ok so this local find is definitely one everyone who lives near/on/by Adams Avenue has to try. Prices are fair for the food you are getting and proportions, but even more so you won’t mind paying once you bite into one of the savory paninis. I was on my way back to Arizona but needed to eat breakfast with my family. We needed a quick but healthy spot. Backyard Café popped up and I started reading the reviews but what really got me was the pictures of the food and patio… we love a great patio to enjoy our food and weather! To shorten this up, get the BANANABREAD(we opted out of the butter or cream cheese — definitely doesn’t need it). Black ice tea is perfectly sweet on its own. Iced dirty chai tea is great. Breakfast panini was delicious. You must give this gem a try. The service is just as excellent as the food! Way to go Backyard Café. Next California trip I’ll be sure to stop in.

So stoked to live so close to this gem! My hubby and I come here for lunch(to go) on days that he works from home. The place has three seating areas, in front, on the right side of the building, and of course the beautiful backyard area. Also room to sit inside of course! I’ve seen plenty of dogs, and even a parrot hanging out here! Hubbys favorite panini is The Pig– I’m split between breakfast and the Turkey Chipotle! Definitely recommend these guys! Greeted with awesome attitude every time!

This a great little coffee shop with great large outside patio with strong WiFi throughout, and yes, I like being in someone’s backyard. They not only make coffees and teas, but paninis and baked goods. I had the breakfast panini with bacon, egg, provolone cheese, avocado, lettuce, tomatoes, and onions on a Multi-grain toasted bread. Can’t remember the price, but I’m pretty sure it was around $ 6. The panini was very good and came with a great exterior crunch from the panini press. The eggs come fried, so if you want them scrambled, you need to let them know. The eggs were prepared over hard and were good. The bacon was crisp and tasty and the the provolone was melted throughout. They put a generous amount of creamy ripe Hass avocado and greens. One thing I would suggest, they need to find a way to keep the lettuce from wilting in the panini. The bread was great, and its crunch added great texture to the sandwich. Its flavor was very good too. I also had a house drip coffee and it was very good. The location is no doubt and resident converted into a business, hence its great outside patio with that backyard appeal. The young lady and gent who were running the business during my visit were very cool and helpful. If you feel like in eating in someone’s backyard, come on down!

Great new place. Love the nice open patio. Inside is small but nice. Opening with a small menu but everything sounded good, especially their sandwiches. Ordered a cold brew iced coffee and a turkey pesto sandwich on muliti-grain bread. While I was waiting I was looking at the nice side patio and very nice large open patio in the back. Looks brand new, but I believe it’s shared with the other businesses. Sandwich comes out and looks incredible. They did it panini style that I wasn’t expecting. Fresh and delicious. You can tell the bread was made today. I believe they make their own pesto. Generous slices of avocado with tomatoes, onions and nice roasted peppers. The cold brew was a pleasant surprise. Done better than most I’ve had. I like that it doesn’t have a strong acidic after taste like so many I’ve been witnessing lately. Great place. Simple, fresh and done right. This is one of the few coffee places I’d actually hang out in.
