I disagree with people who say it gets my stars because it’s right near the beach. This is a good find. One of the best places along the strip. Inexpensive relatively the fish tacos are worth trying. As in worth trying all of them if you’re in town long enough. I’m a visitor myself.

I think this place is overrated because it is right on the beach. They advertised having four and a half stars on Unilocal on a poster board out front. This is definitely not a 4.5 star place. I had the bean and cheese burrito with added steak. The steak was in a corner of the burrito. I don’t think I got to any steak until at least a third of the way in. Gave it an extra star for the location which is right near the beach. We asked the cashier how big the tacos are and he said«regular size». Whatever that means.

Amazing California Burritos! There’s also a great view of the water and pier! Favorite Mexican place in the area!

If you’re drunk, you’ll walk right by it. If you’re really hungry, you’ll probably stop at Hodad’s because the intoxicating smell of their burger meat wouldn’t let you walk any further. Be strong and sober. Check this place out. The seating outside is much more plentiful than it is inside. On a sprinkling night, you have no choice except to sit inside and get extra cozy with the paper towel dispenser like I did. The set-up is a little tight. You order your food and pick it up in the same spot. You’re walking through a line of people each time. Is the Surfin’ Cali worth all of this? I would say yes. Would I go through the hassle often? Probably not. The burrito is comparable to Lucha Libre’s version. This one had much more shrimp which is much to my liking. They also have a delicious verde salsa to help lubricate your throat and scarf the entire burrito down like I did. Such a good kick, I really couldn’t get enough. It also could’ve been because I was starving, but I’ll just say it was because it was that good.

Incredible taco spot! We arrived early around 6:30 and found a table immediately. Fantastic margaritas(beer + wine too!), chips + guac, and tacos. I recommend the specialty taco, asada burrito, steak + shrimp taco, and spicy shrimp taco. Truly the best tacos I’ve ever had. Had a big appetite, crushed 3 tacos. Can’t wait to return!

The food, portions, and prices are great in this hole in the wall find! The place is small so don’t rely on seating at the restaurant, chances are it’s taken. I had the steak and shrimp taco, octopus taco, and got a total for lunch the next day along with some homemade horchata! The salsas they have available were amazing, perfect amount of spice and a great amount of flavor!

AMAZING. I was skeptical at first looking at the prices($ 5−6/taco), but once I got my tacos, it was understandable why. The tacos were huge and the quality of the food was top-notch! I got the steak & shrimp combo taco and that first bite was heaven! It came topped with avocados, crunchy shredded cabbage, and fresh tomato and red onion salsa. The steak was flavorful and the shrimp was juicy! Did I mention that Mike’s is also right by the beach? I sat outside and had a nice view of the ocean while enjoying my taco and washing it down with a cold Tecate. Life does not get better than that! I highly recommend this place for those that love Baja-style tacos because this place delivers!

Possibly best fish tacos in San Diego, definitely the best in OB. Highly recommend the octopus taco as well as the Surfin California burrito(come hungry). I love the three sauces(green, orange, salsa) that they give you. Mike’s is no frills walk-up service, but it’s fast and they get your order right consistently– two benefits over South Beach. Couple that with their late hours, and you’ve got a winning combination. Did I forget to say that the tacos are fantastic? Well they are. If you only ever have fish tacos in OB once in your life, it needs to be at Mike’s Taco Club. Travis’s bottom line: You’re gonna like the way it tastes, I guarantee it!

Great food. Street food atmosphere. Authentic Mexican flavor. Generous portions. I had a fish taco that could have fit comfortably on two corn tortillas, so I might ask for another next time. Breakfast burrito with chorizo: huge and delicious! Outdoor seating is very intimate and allows dogs so could be difficult to navigate when busy. Very limited indoor seating.

OK so if you’ve read any of my other posts you know I don’t give 5 stars for anything but since I just realized that I’ve been here for the last 7 days straight they must be on to something. Location is great, Carne is amazing & never has any of that gristly(if that’s a word) crap in it, cheap tall cans of beer & great prices. I mean a $ 4 taco is all I need. Oh & they have 3 great sauces. So my first 5 star review. & I’ll. Probably be back tomorrow. Sorry Nico’s & Luche Libre.

I can’t turn down tacos when I’m so far South in Southern California, so I couldn’t resist Mike’s Taco Club. We had a couple other spots to try, so I opted for only ordering 1… and thankgod I did, because this single fish taco was huge! Super tasty, but with I would guess zero salt… fortunately we got a basket of chips and guac, which I highly recommend the guacamole on top of the fish taco for the added flavor. We lounge outside which have tables good enough for groups if you can snag them. I think there’s inside seating, but we didn’t go inside… Definitely don’t pass this up if you’re looking for something quick and good on your way to the beach or strolling around OB.

Yum, yum, yum. Plus tall cans!!! I can’t even remember the name of the place that was here before but it doesn’t matter. Mike’s Taco Club not only sounds like what I might call my lady parts if I had a boyfriend named Mike, it’s also the name of the best taco spot in OB. This place blows South Beach out of the water. Not only are their tacos a better value, with fresher tasting fish — they actually know what customer service is! Huzzah!(Sorry SB, your service went out the window when you opened the upstairs. Arguably long before that as well) They have three bomb salsas that you can grab from the counter to dress your tacos. Mike’s boasts a large beer selection in bottles and cans, including traditional Mexican beers and beers from Ballast Point despite their small sized location. Not only is Mike’s perfectly situated for grabbing a breakfast burrito and watching the morning waves, it’s in the perfect location to get your late night fill after a few hours of cruising the bars on Newport. Monday-Thursday they are only open till 9pm but Friday & Saturday they are open until 2:30am after the bars close! If you can’t find some one at the bars that will let you join their taco club(wink wink) Mike’s will be waiting for ya! I’d love to see an expanded salsa selection and a larger interior, but I imagine if they continue on the road they are on, they’ll be expanding soon enough! Don’t take my word for it, grab a few friends, a few tacos and enjoy the people watching on Newport while stuffing your face and sipping a tall Tecate. PS: The patio is dog friendly!

Their tacos are pretty big! Got the scallop taco, octopus taco, and surf and turf taco(steak and shrimp). They were all tasty and interesting. I enjoyed the octopus taco the best because it had a little more texture than the scallop, and it was more unusual than the surf and turf. There were three bottles of sauce: green, orange and red. I preferred the green one. The orange one is a creamy chipotle sauce if you’re into that, and the red sauce is just hot. They serve alcohol so we ate our tacos with some margaritas and luckily we got some seating outside. There are just a few tables outside, so I guess come when it’s less busy or take your food to the beach across the street. We were staying at the Ocean Beach Hotel which is literally next door, so the morning before we left, we made sure to stop by Mike’s for a breakfast burrito. We made a request off menu and they made it no problem: surf and turf breakfast burrito. THATWASAMAZING. I highly recommend you get that. I love how buttery the steak and shrimp are. Perfect last meal before leaving Ocean Beach.

I was back in SD for work and staying at a friends place in OB. I knew I had to get a Cali Burrito if I was in SD so my buddy said I had to try Mike’s. Let me tell you, it does not disappoint. While it might be on the higher end of prices for a burrito, it is not only magical, but also massive. The burrito can easily be split into two meals. I walked over to Mike’s on a Friday for lunch and there were a few others there eating. I was able to order and leave with my food in less then 10 mins. The entire burrito tasted incredibly fresh and just melted in your mouth. I do look back at my visit and wish I got the Sufin Cali Burrito but I will just have to come back and try it again. For a whole in the wall joint, this place wins!

5 stars for a hole in the wall taco joint! It’s a simple place: not too many options, quick order, sit outside and wait for your number to be called at the window. And then… taco deliciousness. This visit came one week after my return from Mexico so my taco standards are extra high right now. We had the scallop taco(original, unique flavor) and the grilled fish taco(light and tasty), smothered both in the sauces readily dispensed at the window, and fell in love. Also note: AVOCADO on both! Can’t wait to go back and try more!

I visited a ton of restaurants while I was in San Diego. Big name places that were featured on TV shows and very highly rated places here on Unilocal. We had an entire list when we arrived & went to every place on our list. The one place that wasn’t on our radar, that ended up being our favorite, was Mike’s Taco Club. We loved the neighborhood of Ocean Beach; it is an awesome place. Tons of food options, the hippy vibe, the dog friendly brewery & beach & awesome little coffee shops – not to mention, the beautiful beach! While taking a walk on Newport Avenue in the beginning of our trip, we stumbled across Mike’s. I LOVE tacos & was hungry, so we stopped in on a whim, not knowing what to expect. I ordered the steak taco & the surf & turf taco. WOW. The steak was cooked perfectly… soo flavorful & so absolutely delicious. The shrimp was cooked perfectly too. It was clearly fresh because there wasn’t even a hint of fishiness in the taste & it was juicy & just unbelievable. The tacos were simple; topped with cheese, cabbage, tomato, cilantro & avocado– but they were fresh, the tortilla held up nicely & everything just went together SO well. Their house made sauces are all to DIE for. The green one being probably my favorite, as well as the orange-ish one. I am practically drooling thinking about it. We ended up coming back here twice more. Once just for guacamole, because I wasn’t super hungry. The guacamole wasn’t my favorite– I personally like a little more lime & cumin in my guac, but the chips were delicious & homemade. The last time we visited, it was the last day of our trip. We had tried all of the restaurants we wanted to try and wanted to go back to the place where we had the BEST food during our trip, which of course, was Mike’s! I’m not kidding, these were the best tacos I have ever had. I am so sad that I live so incredibly far from this place & can’t just walk here every day, because if I lived close I wouldn’t be able to contain myself. Their tacos are simple, fresh & delicious. They are absolutely wonderful. I WILL return to San Diego during my life time(HOPEFULLY) and I swear I will eat here every day if I do!

Man, I knew I was crazy to declare Mike’s Taco Club my favorite taco shop after only two visits! I went again over the weekend, and it was bad. So depressing. I got a burrito with beans, rice, and guacamole. They charged about $ 5 for the bean and cheese, then added the rice for 0.75, and the guacamole for 0.99, and took off the cheese. So, a burrito with just beans, rice, and guac cost about $ 7. That’s just nuts. I might’ve been okay with the price if the burrito was delish. It was not delish. The beans were bland, had no flavor at all. The tortilla wasn’t warm and also had no flavor. The rice — no flavor. The guacamole was just like that pre-made guacamole you can get at Vons or Costo in packets — which isn’t bad in a pinch, but certainly isn’t what anyone wants at a taco shop. It was like they took that pre-made guac and added chopped onion and peppers. It was way too acidic — either too much lime juice or too much citric acid, which is another reason it reminded me of the pre-made stuff. It also didn’t have enough salt, if it had any. The chips had no salt. What a disappointing trip! I’m sad to say I won’t be trying Mike’s again.

This place is hard to find even when you are looking at the street numbers! Mike’s is located on the bottom floor of a small two story building. The second floor is occupied by a tatoo shop which has large signs which dominate the building. Easy fix look for the tatoo shop! There is a small patio and space for about ten people inside to sit, but only tables for about 6 inside. The place is pretty small but the kitchen packs quite a punch. We ordered the following items: Surfin Cali Burrito: steak, shrimp, avocado, shredded cabbage, cilantro, onions and tomato stuffed into a giant tortilla $ 9.95 and worth every penny. My girls couldn’t stop saying MMMMM between bites and phrases like«this is the best burrito ever» Seafood Torta: This was supposed to have fish, shrimp and scallops along with cheese, cabbage, avocado, etc. I couldn’t find any shrimp or scallops grrrrrrr I was not happy with this $ 10.99 Spicy Shrimp Taco: street taco size tortillas, spicy shrimp, cabbage, avocado and pico de gallo. My girls were too full from their burrito but said it was pretty spicy. At $ 5.99 the regular shrimp taco at $ 2.99 seems like a better option ie just add hot sauce. Fish Taco: grilled fish(I think Mahi) street taco tortillas, cabbage, pico and avocado. The grilled fish has a soy flavor that I really didn’t care for. My torta tasted the same way. At $ 2.99 I wonder if I could have asked for deep fried fish since I saw several people who had ordered fish and chips. This little dive joint puts out some serious food. Unfortunately I didn’t really like what I ordered but my girls Surfin Cali Burrito was seriously good. I can only surmise that the Surfin Cali Tacos are just as good. I would definitely come back here in a heart beat but I would not order the seafood torta.
