Pete Mayo’s Waffle Burgers

My husband and I tried this place for the first time today. The food was amazing and the gentleman behind the counter was so polite and friendly. We will definitely be going back to try more. He ha #15 and gizzards I had #9. Amazing

First I want to say, the owner is what makes this place a five star. He is very welcoming and enjoys talking about his food.
I tried the chicken bacon waffle burger without tomato. It was very good. Chicken strips taste homemade and the bacon very good. The waffle kind of tastes like a frozen waffle but cooked on a flat top but it pairs very well with the food. We also ordered fries and cheese poppers. Both were very good. The free side of macaroni salad that was given to us was wonderful. I would come back for that alone. It is pretty different from any I have tried before but I was left scrapping every bit out of the container.
The place looks pretty rundown and is not very appealing, but don’t let that stop you from going in. The prices are great and as I said before the owner is the reason this place is a five star. I will be back to try more and get more of that macaroni salad.

I’ve come here a few times now and thought the waffles burgers (specifically the chicken) was worth coming back for again and again.
Tbh. The place is a little run down which is truly unfair because the burgers and fries are amazing. It’s in a sketchy part of the neighborhood, seems a little unsanitary and can make you think twice about entering. However, try to overlook that aspect because the food is worth it. The guy that runs it is really friendly and the waffle burgers are decently priced and delicious.

Gonna keep this short and sweet:
#2 The WHILLY — really yum, somewhat reminiscent of a cheesesteak… This became a mess quickly, all the juices were unfortunately making my waffles soggy, but in a somewhat good way.
Cheese poppers — were whatevers, they’re basically jalapeño poppers with cream cheese inside. Somehow dry?
#9 Chicken Breast n Bacon — Good, no complaints
Mac Salad — not bad, tastes like a macaroni salad as it should.
This place feels really homey, keep it up Pete.

I ordered the pastrami on blueberry waffles and it was so delicious, so savory, I can’t wait to bring my friends back here.
My partner in crime got the Calabo. Pete recommended the smoked sirloin as one of the meat choices. That along with Pete’s classic burger and pastrami on buttermilk waffles left me speechless. Every meat so delicious. We are coming back just for the classic burger because that smoky flavor left me wanting more of that meat.
Pete recommended his strawberry cream waffle fries for next time. It’s been awhile since I’ve Unilocaled. Pete’s Mayo’s down home personality and service along with waffles sandwhiches and burgers that are unforgettable are a huge win for we San Diegans!

Black community restaurant is what you all may think. Nah, Pete is the proud chef and owner of this waffle burger joint. Food is not tapped into its potential but I believe he can perfect something out of the menu.

I will literally be working my way down the menu until I’ve tried every sandwich. If the food wasn’t enough to keep me coming back, the friendliness and sense of community definitely are. Pete is a guy with a passion for cooking that shows in his sandwiches. The care he takes to deliver a quality product is indicative of the ownership he takes of his craft. He’s a business owner with a heat of gold and isn’t afraid to try new things with his cooking. This is my new lunch spot.

I will say it was an excellent experience. A nice hole in the wall place. The service is fast friendly with excellent prices. The menu is simple which is a plus. The food is great going to return to try with the different flavor of waffles.

This place is awesome!!! I had the cabalo burger, I had it with beef, phillysteak, and bacon. on buttermilk waffles. It was a great burger. The owner is down to earth and makes every burger as if he was making it for himself. I will be going back on a regular basis. Can’t wait to show some of my workers there to try it out.

One of those proverbial hole in the yadda yadda… And of course with that being said, it’s grrrrreat!
Small place with limited seating, it just smells of deep fried, and grilled goodness. I had the grid chicken waffle burger with bacon, the bigger waffle fries and some poppers as well.
If you like chicken and waffles together, this place is for you. The waffle burger was just amazing. I can’t really describe it, but all these basic ingredients together worked wonderfully together. Nothing was too overdone or undercooked. Just some good food.
The waffle fries were also cooked well, perfect amount of crunch and perfectly greasy. They didn’t last too long, as I was devouring them at a good pace. And ditto goes to the poppers!
This place is great, parking is limited to the street really. But go on in, and enjoy some great food. Don’t let the infamous intersection keep you away!

Out of this world Waffle Burgers and Waffle Fried Chicken sandwiches! The Waffle fries ohhhh myyy!

Ok. So I had the turkey burger with cheese, lettuce, tomatoes, ketchup… so freaking bomb!!! Definitely coming back again!!! AND they have the Mexican glass coca cola sodas. NOM-​NOM!!!

Good pastrami! I had a sandwich at another place last week and their pastrami was lame by comparison (fried is the only way to go, it ain’t lunch meat). And to the reviewer who claimed he got sick after 10 minutes: food poisoning doesn’t work that fast. I know, I Googled it, as maybe you should before you try to ruin someone’s reputation. I’m looking forward to trying the strawberry whipped cream waffle fries next time. And medio litro Cokes! Portion right for the price, too.

Their sign says, «the best burgers ever tasted!»
I would normally have big problem with such a bold statement, but in this case IT’S ABSOLUTELY TRUE!
I try something different every time I come here and I have never been disappointed. PETE knows how to make huge flavor. Today I tried the strawberry and whipped cream covered waffle cut fries. DELICIOUS.
IF EVERYONE KNEW ABOUT THIS PLACE THE LINE WOULD BE AROUND THE BLOCK!

WARNING!!! I ate there for the second time to support the African American owned business and DISAPPOINTINGLY I became pretty sick with diarrhea and then a sudden feeling that i needed to vomit. When I ate the waffle burger with bacon it tasted fine but within 10 – 12 min after eating i had to use the bathroom asap. He cooked without gloves and i doubt if he washed his hands. Never again never again!!!

Tried out this place for the first time and I’d have to say it was pretty good. I pass by this little place all the time. I ordered The Original and 1lb chicken gizzards. Both items were flavorful and the gizzards were nice and crunchy and went with the sweet and spicy sauce. Don’t be afraid to try the chicken gizzards! It’s like crunchy meat :). The pricing is affordable. Give this place a shot! Pete is a pretty chill and cool guy!

Pete Mayo is the owner of the establishment and we really enjoyed hanging out there for a could hours eating and joking around with him. Loved hearing his stories on how he came up with some of the recipes. We were attending another function across the street and saw a brightly lit Waffles and Burgers sign and thought,“dude, we have to try that!!!” And I’m glad we did. Establishment isn’t much but the food is definitely made with love. I loved it so much I’m already planning on taking another trip back with more friends! :-)

I had the whilly and it was wonderful! Pete (at least I am assuming he was Pete because he was the only one there and someone refered to him as Pete) was very nice and took my order along with giving me suggestions and I saw him making the waffles and flattening them. His sandwiches are a great twist using waffles instead of buns and it actually taste better to me especially when the sauce/​juice from the meat soaks in the waffle!
The area looked somewhat questionable and where to park was confusing to me but I saw people park directly in front of the restaurant. I had parked in the alleyway (possibly illegally but I got my order to go just in case). I will definitely go back when I am in town, I kinda want to go back before I fly out in a few days!

Finally dropped by here yesterday after hearing some buzz about the place from one of my relatives (as well as through seeing the menu online!).
The owner/​cook was there and he was really welcoming and friendly. We got to talking (including the trouble he’s been having with the
folks), and after deciding on what to order (waffle fries + #5 Mayo’s Cracked Pepper Turkey + #12 Pete’s B.L.T. + a lemon lime flavored Sparking ICE Water), I sat down and watched some TV.
Food came out hot and fresh and pretty quick, and after a cool farewell (I had ordered to go), I went off home to try the food out.
The waffle fries were pretty tasty, and when I opened the boxes for the sandwiches, I was surprised to see them looking very delicious. Although the waffles (instead of bread buns) were smaller than I expected, the cracked pepper turkey was actually shredded slices (versus a bun) which I really loved and were well done, and that one itself was just plain amazing.
Got a bit full after the #5, waffle fries and finishing off the drink (which was ok), so I ended up saving the BLT (#12) for another day. Overall, I enjoyed the excellent service, the food was amazing, and I’d love to recommend the place to others.
