Halau Hula O Uluwehilaukoa

This halau was everything that I didn’t know I was looking for!
When I started looking into a halau to join, I wanted to join solely for the reason of learning hula dance moves. I had no idea that I would be joining a halau where I not only learned the dance moves, but I learned the language, the culture, how to create my own dancing implements, folk stories that have been passed down for generations, and enjoyed doing so with other hula sisters that became family. Kumu Jan is great about cultivating a school where dancers become extended family and often organizes events and activities to get us bonding together outside of the studio as well.
Kumu Jan has trained for many years under some of hula’s best teachers and songwriters. She has a lot of knowledge about the Hawaiian culture and it’s healing practices. When it comes to teaching, she is very patient and makes the class a fun and enjoyable one. She makes sure you feel comfortable in the class!
Although I had to leave the halau due to moving away, I am still so thankful to this date for finding this halau and for all the love and compassion Kumu Jan has (and still!) extends to me. The fact that we still keep in touch shows just how much she cares for her students.

Kumu Kaohinani is very knowledgeable about the traditions and culture of Hula, and encourages learning the Hawaiian language. You will learn so much from her and will develop solid basics. If you desire to learn the meaning of hula (and not just memorizing steps), then this is the Halau for you. You will have fun and be disciplined as a hula dancer. Screenland dance studio is clean and well managed.

I joined Halau Hula O Uluwehilaukoa last year and it has been one of the best decisions I have made. I joined with two of my co-​workers and we are still at it. Kumu Janie is very traditional and a wonderful teacher. We have learned chants and their meaning as well as dances.
Everyone is every warm and friendly and I am so glad I have met the wonder people in this halau.
