Awesome Old Skool hofbrau sort of place. Turkey, Roast Beef, and of course fried chicken to die for. mashed potatoes are amazing. The problem is that they killed this place before you could try their food…;(

I’M SODEPRESSED! I never even knew it was closing or I would’ve gone one last time to say goodbye :( The green salad was awesome, just thinking about it makes my mouth water. So was the rice pudding. And the one guy who worked behind the counter was so nice! I don’t know why but he always made my day. I’d always get the half chicken with mashed potatoes and gravy(and the salad and rice pudding, of course) and it was so good. What I liked about this place was that I felt at home here. the food was somehow so comforting. I had been going there since I could remember. I’m just really sad it’s gone. :(

The reason why I give this restraint five stars is the following 1. Full chicken meals. They have a nice Cornish hen, ready to slice and serve in front of you. 2. Cafeteria setting. The trays are comforting, and nostalgic of an old fashion school experience. 3. Enough food to fill you for at least two meals. 4. A big heaping pile of mash potatoes and river of gravy. What could you want more? 5. Never crowded. Every time I have eaten there, I’ve only seen a max of six people. It leaves for a uninterrupted eating experience. I’m hungry now. See you there

My boyfriend had the catfish and I had chicken with mashed potatos and stuffing. The mashed potatoes and the stuffings were good. The chicken and the catfish were a bit dry. The rice pudding was decent. It also has cinnamon added to it. The food here pretty cheap for a large portion. The waitresses are also nice! One more star cause my friend knows the owner! Holla@Bill’s!

I’m not sure what drew Jamie W. and me to this Chick-n-Coop outpost except for a faint memory I had of visiting the more compact one in the Excelsior. This one feels like it belongs in some suburban mall somewhere outside of Chattanooga replete with plastic foliage and the country kitchen décor. I think I made my first mistake by perusing the cafeteria fare offered under the heat lamps. I ordered the $ 13,50 Half-Chicken with Mashed Potatoes & Gravy(see photo). Dry as a bone. Virtually inedible. Even pouring the gravy over the carcass wasn’t helping. I also didn’t care much for the side salad that was drowning in enough oil and vinegar to make the BP spill look forgivable(see photo). Jamie had better luck with the same-price Meat Loaf with Mashed Potatoes & Gravy(see photo). Admittedly, it’s hardier to screw up meat loaf, especially if it’s swimming in a thick marinara sauce, but at least it was moist and boneless. He was also smart to get the Three Bean Salad as his side since the beans, unlike my wilted lettuce, absorbed the dressing. In hindsight, I should have taken advantage of their heat-lamp-proof hofbrau sandwiches. I know from the Excelsior location that they do those well, and even if they don’t, I can always reach for the mayo. For some reason, I feel like playing Bingo in here for the grand prize of a leopard-print Snuggie. FOOD — 2.5 stars… school cafeteria fare at grown-up prices, bone-dry chicken by 8PM AMBIANCE — 3 stars… the Fingerhut catalog comes to life SERVICE — 2.5 stars… they pile the food on the plate, no big whoop TOTAL — 3 stars… barely makes a third star, consider it a credit for its longevity in the ‘hood

I felt a little out of place being under 50, but I like what Chick-N-Coop has to offer — solid, quick food that is reasonably priced. For around $ 8 I had a full meal including ¼ chicken, roll, baked potato, and salad. It was a tasty, filling meal and because it’s cafeteria style there’s no wait. The staff is friendly, the dining room is boring but not uninviting. Requisite hot sauce and other condiments are found on the tables like they should be. I have a feeling I will be eating here a lot more in the months to come.

I don’t understand how anyone can really complain about this place. You get a great portion of tasty classic american comfort food. For 10 dollars you’ll walk out of here with a stomach full of good stuff. I mean don’t walk in here expecting some Michelin 5 star stuff. Walk in here hungry and ready to be fed some solid old school food. I’d recommend this place to anyone who has a taste for a classic American meal.

only my 2nd favorite place on taraval. It’s one of those places you come to when you feel like things in your world are changing too fast. time stops here. things have been kept the same here since who knows when, I know before I existed 20 something years ago. I only enjoy eating here with family :] juice?

I admit it… I love a good hot pastrami sandwich. Thanks to the recommendation of Theodore O. who is a god in the pastrami world(aka The Pastrami King), I finally hit the Chick-N-Coop for a pastrami sandwich for lunch yesterday. Haven’t been to this restaurant in years and would never have thought to get a sandwich here if it had not been for his recommendation. The décor itself is quite spartan and it looked like it hasn’t changed one bit since I was last there years ago(yikes), so I got my order to go. I was told that my sandwich comes with salad, but I don’t do salad, so I ended up getting a fruit jello that was okay. The sandwich itself was really good and satisfying… I really enjoyed the quality and juiciness of the pastrami and the only thing that would have made it perfect was if there had been even more pastrami in the sandwich. When it comes to a good hot pastrami sandwichs, I’ve always been of the belief that too much is just enough! Regardless, there were some nice thick cut chunks which definitely satisfied my craving. Next time I’m in the area and want a good pastrami sandwich, I will most definitely be back. The Pastrami King rocks… long live the Pastrami King!

Places like these are coming to be fewer in an age of modern dining, which is sad because these places are quite an enduring sight. Chick-N-Coop is not your prime choice for a meal, but if you’re looking for decent meat and potatoes, here’s the place to go. Plenty of choices for the resident carnivore ranging from chicken to beef to turkey. You have the usual baked or mashed potato with a side of salad and you have yourself the typical plated meal. Usually, you’ll get a generous portion, but the price is still pretty steep depending on the meat. Speaking of the meat… it can be inconsistent in terms of how well it’s cooked. Sometimes, it might be dry or rare. Oh, and I heard that the turkey legs go fast. Makes sense because they can have so much turkey… Plain and simple, Chick-N-Coop is pretty much a walk-in cafeteria where you just walk in, order and tray your way to the cashier. Don’t expect waiters to fill your water or ask how things are going.

This place was okay. I think it’s a bit expensive for the type of food and setting they offer. +1 star for having the Giants game on TV, though. But I probably wouldn’t go back… there are other places in the city that offer better roasted meat.

When I first saw this place, I knew I needed to try it. First, I LOVE chicken. Second, I love the vintage décor and feel of the place. It seems so out of place(for the Sunset at least) and time. I ordered the quarter chicken meal to go. The chicken was delicious(not dry like I’ve read in other reviews) and the sides were plentiful and filling. I think I got the mashed potatoes(which I also love, so no complaining) and a salad. The staff were very friendly and the prices can’t be beat($ 7-$ 8 for dinner in SF=excellent!!)!

This place has been around so long it’s practically vintage. From the sign, to the counter tops, to the tables, and even to half the clients dining in this place, it’s all super retro. With the name, I think you can figure out what it’s known for. Chicken. But they also serve roast beef(really rare, and ok when I had it but I am told by others it’s not that consistent), corn beef hash on St. Paddy’s day, turkey. and spare ribs. You can order the meats alone, in a sandwich, or as an entrée(comes with vegetable sides and bread). Prices are low for 2010. $ 10 for a sandwich and probably around $ 12 – 14 for an entrée. Food was okay also, and fit right in with the whole feel of the restaurant.

I have always driven by this place for years, and finally got the chance to eat inside and try it out. I read from the other reviews that you shouldn’t get any of the meats besides chicken, so that’s what I ordered along with a baked potato and mac ‘n cheese. Well the mac ‘n cheese was just okay, baked potato was livable, and the chicken… it is was good but I’ve had better. They are definitely nothing like Pete’s BBQ in the mission district. Not sure if I’d consider coming back… maybe if I was REALLY hungry and have no other options.

Semi decent. Only good thing is their 2 chickens and 2 sides deal you can get for take-out. It’s cheap and can add up to a lot of meat when you take it off the bone and try to use for some other dish. That’s what I do sometimes. Cheaper than buying pre-cooked birds at Safeway, unless it’s super cheap chicken Fridays. Nothing to be overly wowed about. But give it try if you’re craving some chicken and fixens.

With chicken in the name and logo, you wonder why they even bother to serve other stuff like roast beef, turkey, etc — you gotta go with your namesake! Obviously went with the chicken. The verdict? San Francisco absolutely needs more places where you can hand over $ 5, and in return, get a fully cooked half chicken. It took minimal effort to remove the skin, and what was underneath was an abundance of mostly white meat. The pieces I’ve had so far are excellent, and the rest will make the perfect spinach salad topping.

Come here for a taste of simple, hofbrau style comfort food, 1970s style! Start with a tray and order up front, cafeteria style. I like how you can see all the food before you order it and the menu is simple: meat dinners(roast beef, turkey, ribs, ham, pastrami, rotisserie chicken), sandwiches($ 7.75 includes salad or potato), and a daily special(pork chops during my visit). I went with the chicken special($ 7.39). It comes w/the skin on rotisserie chicken, your choice of salad, roll, and potato(mashed or baked). The salads didn’t look bad(potato, macaroni, beans, green, beets) and maybe you can even get jello instead? You can help yourself to water(in pitchers), get your own utensils and choose where to sit. * Chicken — it wasn’t as good as Whole Foods or even Safeway’s version though the skin is crispier, the meat was quite bland and dry(it was white meat). The skin was too salty. * Mashed potatoes and brown gravy — the gravy wasn’t too salty but it didn’t have much flavor, the potatoes were also bland — you get a ton of gravy and potatoes * Beet salad — I love beets even straight out of the can. This salad came w/slices of beets, chopped onion and fresh parsley; very simple, I liked it. * Roll with butter — surprisingly good, soft and chewy, tasted fresh There are various condiments at each table and I do recommend that you use them. Once I added the hot sauce and pepper, cut everything up and mixed it together, the food wasn’t bad at all. It is cafeteria like but prepared by someone who seems to care. The guy who seems to own this place smiles as he carves his meat and seems chummy with his regulars. The recipes probably haven’t changed since the 70s. The décor is quite strange with two chandeliers, carpeting and Grecian style planters with fake plants. They even put Easter decorations on each table. I have to say I like the ambiance because it’s just so out there — kinda upscale but cheap at the same time. Very grandma’s house inspired. They play 70s music too — I think I recognized one song — might have been by the Eagles(not sure). It’s very spacious and there’s even a bar area with a TV. The booths are very comfortable! Your grandma would like Chick n’ Coop. Seniors enjoy a discount(and they love this place).

I would call myself a pretty hardcore gym rat. I also try to eat healthy and watch my carbs. But, once in a while I do like to indulge a bit. I’ll have a slice of pizza sometimes. The next day, I would say… I have not had fried chicken in ages… then I’d have myself some KFC. Next day would be a bacon double cheeseburger. And the day after that would be all you can eat Indian food. Then pizza again because three days is a long time ago. Plus Milano and Escape From New York are in different zip codes, I think. What does this have to do with Chick-N-Coop? I don’t remember really. I was just hungry during my dinner break one day and I felt like spoiling myself a bit. You can’t beat generous amounts of food that resemble holiday church potlucks. I’m talking 4 — 5 meaty ribs(a little dry in some areas) with a ramekin of bbq sauce on the side. Plus you get a nice mound of mash potatoes and heaps of tasty stewed cabbage and carrots on the side. Toss in a roll of bread just to top you off. This place is cafeteria style. The food is already prepared and waiting to jump in your tummy. The grub is as good as it gets for this type of feast, so if you like to occasionally indulge yourself from time to time, like I do… Chick-N-Coop is A-Okay.

Lately, I’ve been reviewing places that already have plenty of accolades. And I can’t help but feel as if I’m passively drifting in this Unilocal main stream of eateries. The thing is I’ve enjoyed most of theses highly rated and reviewed restaurants so I can’t complain. I just hate to think I’ve been ignoring the smaller places that still need a chance to astound and yearn to be explored. So I’m back to scouring the neighborhood and find myself at Chick-N-Coop. The smell of the rotisserie chicken from here alone is worth a couple stars. This restaurant is a no non-sense, sit down and chow kinda place. As for the food, it is typical of what you would find at an average hoffbrau so be sure to be hungry. As for the aromatic chicken that first drew me in, it was a little dry but it was nothing gravy couldn’t fix. Overall, I appreciated Chick-N-Coop for what it is: a place to get a lot of comfort food for not a lot of money. I’m giving this place 2.5 stars but am rounding-up since it’s close to home and reminds me of cafeteria food at it’s best.
