Have eaten their twice already while on our honeymoon. Amazing noodles with roast pork(ordered it on both visits) and good fried rice. They stay open late, which may make you wonder. The only thing you need to wonder about is why you aren’t there eating. Talked to some locals and they agree with me, good stuff here. In fact I am already dreading not being able to taste this awesome Chinese food once I leave San Francisco. Actually can’t wait until they open at 11am to go back for some more!

Bad service AND they charged me service charge/gratuity for 3PEOPLE!!! That’s some bullshit. Food taste Mediocre. There’s definitely better Chinese restaurants around the area.

Love this place and we can count on it for good Chinese food without all the typical Chinese drama. Great Noodle dishes and they even have dim sum now.

I don’t write negative reviews unless I have bad experience… USELESS food!!! I made the food orders and within minutes 3 dishes was ready… I was surprised The food was not really delicious and standard was poor Employees wearing white shirt and looked like never wash at all(dark spots and seasoned outfits) I really feel uncomfortable here. We were 5 adults 1 baby, employee said gratuity 15% for more than 6 people and also he mentioned that«you request for big table» so it’s 15% tips added in your bill. Guess what!!! I asked him who is the«6» person he looked at the baby and pointed, he said«6th the baby» I ordered him to remove it otherwise I am walking away without signing it… he «VOID» the transaction and recharged me the actual amount. Ladies and gentleman, I am a good tipper but this situation was unacceptable Good luck

I hadn’t been to New Sun for about 6 years, but today had a hankering for their garlic soy sauce chow mein so ventured back. It was about the same — kinda mediocre quality in a funky smelling environment, but the prices had gone up significantly. See you in another six years, New Sun. I’m sure you’ll still be around!

Absolutely horrible asian food. I think this still is existant because it could be a great late night spot when you are done drinking and just want some sustanance.

I’m not sure why the low rating, but it may have something to do with the late night experience. Also, there seem to be a lot of reviewers who are perpetually indignant about something. Anyway, this is a pretty good restaurant. Try the fish — cod with vegetables, the dry chow fun, almost any chow mien or the fried noodles. If you like salty fish, their salty fish and chicken fried rice is probably the best I’ve had in SF, but not really close to being the best I’ve had. Sill, it is good. I went yesterday. The tables were clean and looked new.

Went in here for Thanksgiving dinner without a reservation. Was quickly seated. The Catfish/Ham Claypot really hit the spot on that chilly night. Nothing fancy but filling.

My wife and I came here after renewing our vows on the Gay on the Bay Hornblower Cruise. We both order the $ 14.50 Special which included your choice of Hot & Sour Soup or Wonton Soup, fried egg roll, choice of chow mein or eqq fried rice as well as General Tao Chicken or Mongolian Beef. I chose the Hot & Sour soup which was great tasting and definitely piping hot. lol I choice the egg fried rice which was okay, learned that there is a difference between that and vegetable fried rice… which I would have preferred. The food was prepared and delivered to our table very quickly and was hot. The General Tao’s chicken merely looked like chicken pieces with buffalo sauced poured on top. The sauce did nothing for the chicken, no «heat» no real flavor. It was kind of disappointing. I really was not in the mood for Chinese food but my wife really wanted Chinese food. My wife’s food turned out better than mine, I am sure she had something to do with that… lol

Cantonese salty fish fried rice with chicken & Hot and Sour Soup. of course I’m very familiar with this place, I’ve been here many times! if you come during the day, the waitress is nice enough. just like a normal restaurant. but if you want to see a comedy . come here after 10 pm. there are 3 waiters: 1 who doesn’t speak english, 1 who constantly hanging out by the cashier desk checking out the calendar, and 1 who likes to talk so loud like nobody is in the room. I always feel entertained just by observing them. great food. I love the salty fish fried rice with chicken, big portion hot & sour soup, orange peel chicken, beef steak Hong Kong style, big prawn fried rice. great location. on Broadway, Grant, and Columbus. in the heart of North Beach. great prices.

I really don’t know why so many negative reviews… geez, really guys? I mean it’s san Francisco Chinatown, not a Michelin star restaurant for gods sake! to be honest, keep your expectations appropriate and you won’t be disappointed as many other Unilocalers point out, its a great place to go for late night eats after drinking! sure as hell beats jack in the box taco’s…don’t get me wrong, enough alcohol and those are pretty damn tasty too! in any case, have been here a few times, and yes, normally late at night after drinking, sometimes down the street at some of the great Chinatown dive bars(Li Po, Buddah bar, etc)! usually order chow fun, dry of course, or oyster beef over rice… with a fried egg or two… comfort food I grew up with… did try rice porridge late one time, it was ok, had with preserved egg and Chinese donut food is basic Cantonese style cuisine, don’t think it’s really that pricey, maybe for the area, but overall, not really and sorry folks, look around the area… how clean did you REALLY expect this place to be? and you know, for really good Chinese food, you have to go to the semi questionable joints, never go to the pristine clean«A» rated ones… unless you consider Panda Express or PF Changs real Chinese food?

HONESTLY I GIVETHISPLACENOSTARS! My boyfriend and I were starving last night after going out dancing in the city. It was late, a little after midnight and we really were wanting some phở or vietnamese food. I had a sore throat so I just really wanted that warm soothing phở broth. But we couldn’t find any phở places so we decided to try this place because it was open till 3 am, and we both like Chinese food. I ordered the sizzling rice soup. My boyfriend ordered the green westlake beef soup and the spicy short ribs. The spicy short ribs were deep fried which was weird. It was a plate mostly filled with deep fried fat. For $ 12.50 — so we didn’t eat much of that. What really grossed us out was the green westlake soup. It was really bland and my boyfriend found a insect floating around which was absolutely discussing. But after we discovered that we were really turned off and we politely told our server what we found and the server was slightly rude and just took the bowl of soup and said«ok cancel» and walked away… No kind of apology or any sign of empathy. Maybe they like to eat strange insects in their food but that’s is completely unnecessary and not sanitary at all! When we went to go pay upfront. We explained what we found, and we were willing to pay for what we ate which was the sizzling rice soup. I never in my life have experienced such horrible customer service — one of the staff members started talking to my boyfriend and was very rude. He goes«we already print ticket, you pay!» My boyfriend then started to speak and the staff member cut him off again and repeated what he said only yelled it. He was being just completely out of line and disrespectful and he said he was going to call the police. Then we said«No, we should be calling the police and the health department!» And we let them know we took pictures of the floating friend. Which I will post on here. After all this unnecessary banter and arguing we came to an agreement — we would pay for what we ate. We paid for the sizzling rice soup, the cashier was extremely rude and hostile while ringing us up I guess because we got our way. We shouldn’t of paid at all but we’re not cheapskates and we agreed to pay for what we ate. My boyfriend even tipped the server . I do not recommend this place at all!

The food was alright being late night for them drunchies, but this is so pretty expensive Chinese food if you ask me! Our group had about 6⁄7 dishes and it came out to about $ 150? That’s about $ 22 per plate… whaattt? Tried their vegetable chow fun and veggie/mushroom. Good, but omg expensive!

Authentic & simple. The menu is extensive and offers all types of different things from General tsaos chicken to frog & liver porridge. We stuck to the familiar and were not disappointed. The atmosphere is nothing special, little decorations with a window view of the intersections. They give you nice hot tea which was appreciated after a day in windy San Fran. The wonton soup and hot & sour soul were also very good. The soup portions were HUGE and come with the combo plates. We tried Mongolian beef(couldn’t be more tender), the general chicken(crispy, a bit spicy with generous portion) and the pork & veg raviolis. There was nothing to complain about. We wish they had cocktails and wish the atmosphere was a bit more interesting. Service was adequate, but the food is the real reason to come here.

You. Can. Not. Eat. Here. Two people eating at a dirty Chinese restaurant at 1am with terrible service should never cost $ 40 a person. Period. There’s not much more to add.

New Hong Kong is your typical Chinese restaurant stuck between a rock and hard place — too many menu items, an odd split between westernized and authentic, and facilities that make you question food safety. New Hong Kong still had okay MSG-loaded Chinese food to satisfy the craving that I get once every few weeks. As in, I landed in SF, really wanted crappy Chinese food, and wanted it to be from Chinatown. I split the veggie lo mein with the friend I was traveling with and was satisfied. The small corn is quite possible the worst addition to Chinese food since, well, I don’t know because I don’t know the history of Chinese food. The patrons here were a weird mix: people just getting by, large groups of Chinese, small groups of people who had been drinking, and tourists like myself.

Not sure why this place has such low ratings or not enough business during the day. We went there for lunch around 2pm-ish and the place was practically empty. The server was quick to greet and friendly. She didn’t make us feel uncomfortable for ordering rice plate/noodles to share. The food was decent by Chinese standards — so it baffles me why the place was empty at a prime intersection and busy city. Maybe we missed their lunch rush.
