Elwyn’s hat making love started in England while she was learning history. She is inspired by vintage era. Most of her designs use Straw and/or felt. However, she makes customized hats that show individual’s personality.

I saw a cute red violet hat at Elwyn’s stall in the 25th Street art collective the first Friday in November last year and loved it though it was too large as well as out of my hat budget. Mind you this wasn’t any old hat — this was a red violet felt hat with a ribbon of red-violet with tiny blue-green squares. And it had a very jazzy black and white striped feather. I forget the name of the style but it resembles some of the hats that Inca women wear in Peru and other South American countries. So, my dad is from Peru, my favorite crayola combo as a kid was red-violet and blue-green and this hat is queerly purple without being trite. It rides the long bumpy road of the gender spectrum with grace. It is a magic hat that inspires creative urges. When I was participating in the first Friday December event my boss, who had seen the hat with me, snagged my wife who immediately ordered a custom hat for me. She somehow sneaked out of the house with several of my hats and brought them to Elwyn for measurements. The hat was presented to me for my birthday last week. It was lovely but the fit wasn’t quite right. I left a message for Elwyn and promptly got a call back and she was able to see me that same day, which is also my day off from work. Very convenient. I visited her at her studio/storefront and saw the original hat still there. I tried it on and loved how it fit better than the custom made one. Elwyn let me trade for the original hat — which she custom fit with a new headband. She told me how to care for the hat and was a pleasure to deal with. For people not drawn to purple — most of the other hats are black or other colors. She also has a wide array of options on her website. The hats all look very stylish and unique and appear to be very well-made. Elwyn also offers hat-making workshops. I saw a black beaver fedora that was wonderful. Perhaps it isn’t to early to place an order for my next birthday…
