This is the 8^th salon I’ve tried in the Sunset in 5 years, from 9^th Ave to Great Highway. Trying to support local businesses. Happy to return for the next cut.

we went there today for haircut and straightening, me and my husband together with appointment. First of all, let me just say, Joyce is wonderful! she’s friendly, professional and fast! And the hair afterwards turns out to be just what i want!!! thank you Joyce!

1. Hidden gem in sunset
As a recent college graduate looking for a new look, i walked into this hair salon about 5 minutes from where I lived. I didn’t have high expectation knowing that this is not your typical Height-​Ashbury-​expensive-​hipster salon. But I was glad I came in.
2. Exactly what i wanted
Joyce did an amazing job in transforming my look. I had long hair but very unhealthy split ends and I decided to cut it short. Originally I was going for a more bold look, short and bleached blood from long black hair look. Joyce talked me into slow down and try highlight first. The entire process was very smooth as we talked exactly how I wanted my hair to look like. I showed Joyce the Instagram pictures and explained the kind of short trendy hair look I was going for, Joyce got it right away.
3. Reasonable price and very quick
I got my highlight and straight hair all done within 2 hours, and it didn’t feel that long as we chatted about hair care and trendy looks. To be frank, I was surprised to have my desirable look at a decent price and was told to come back if I am not satisfied. Definitely come here next time. If you are a 20 something who happens to live near sunset and looking for a new look, you should give this place a try!

I came by here because I was looking for a short haircut with a perm. Joyce did an amazing job. Because it took a while, I was glad to be around the chit chat too. I am Shanghainese and I felt like I was in the middle Shanghai listening to everybody «chew and gossip». Will definitely be coming back again. Just wish I didn’t live so far away!

I’m usually indifferent about my haircuts, but my experience here have been great and I just have to give a review about this place! I haven’t gone to a salon for a haircut in almost two years. My last haircut was done by me and my roommate with a pair of safety scissors. My DIY haircut wasn’t in any means disastrous but my hair was due for a visit to the hair salon.
When getting my haircut, I was asked what I wanted, and I walked out with everything that I had asked for. I’ver never been happier walking out of a salon. I didn’t ask for the person’s name, but I really should have. I will definitely be back when I feel like my hair needs a good cut! Maybe then I can ask for her name!

I had really, really high hopes for this place, but sadly, I left feeling no confidence, and a lot of disappointment.
First of all, Im Asian, but I have thin, wavy hair. I went in for a haircut in hopes of getting something that would make my hair less puffy. I left looking like a lion.
I asked for layers, but to keep it long – just take off an inch. She must have taken off two-​three inches. Before I got a haircut, my hair covered half my chest, now I can’t even tie it all in a ponytail.
I really dont think it’s100% her fault, I just think that she hasnt dealt much with textured hair – curls, waves, and frizz.
I definitely do not recommend this place for anyone with textured hair, but if you have super straight hair that’s resistant to frizz caused by razors, then go for it.

Amazing service loved it the hair stylist unfortunately I didn’t catch her name but she did a wonderful job with my hair it was like legit cheap… This was like my first time getting my hair high lighted and I was bit scared like it would be permanent and what if I don’t like kinda of deal so she did a really job with picking the right color and stuff loved it :)

Cheap and quick haircut, well worth the $ 12.

I highly recommend this salon! Joyce is really skilled and works very fast. This is my fist time I dye my hair, and the result turned out amazing! I showed Joyce what color I want, then she gave me some advice to help me choose the best way that does not harm my hair. I like my hair color so much! This is just what I want! What’s more, my hair does not become dry at all. I will definitely come back again! Highly recommend!

Joyce is GREAT! I have really long very thick hair and went there for a half of an updo for a wedding for that day. Not only did she do it effortlessly, but then she flat iron curled my hair and it lasted for days. Previously, I have gone for updos on the day of the event, and not only couldn’t the person do it, they would complain and lose patience. Everyone loved my hair — here is a pic from behind and VERY REASONABLE PRICING… I’m going back tomorrow just for a flat iron curling so I have a great hairdo for half the week… I wanted to post my pic but don’t know how to here…

Really great place, only $ 10 for man. But it’s much better than several salon in Market ST costing $ 40+.

This is seriously one of the best haircuts I’ve ever gotten… Not only did she fix my hair from my previous (HORRIBLE) hair cut but she totally transformed me!
5 stars for great customer service! Joyce listened to everything I had to say and made sure everything looked just the way I liked. She is definitely one of the nicest and most patient hair dressers I know.

Called ahead of time and asked about a child’s haircut. The lady on the phone stated that they cut kid’s hair for 10 bucks. Since my usual spot was busy, I thought I would try a new place with the help of Unilocal.
Just a depressing «salon» with hair everywhere. The cut was crooked and after I pointed it out to her, she stated it was my kids fault for tilting her head?! I just wanted to pay and get out of there. I gave her a twenty and she gave me back 8 dollars. After I told her I was the one that called about the price, she stated that it was 10 and up. Didn’t know there was an asterisk to the 10 she quoted me on the phone.
Warning: If you want to go to this shady dump they call a salon, make sure you get the price squared away in writing!
These other reviews must be from her friends. This is not a 5 star establishment!

I’m writing an updated review from the last time I came in back in June… or was it July? I can’t remember. I came in for a root touch up and a trim on my hair cut& had a pretty bad experience. Joyce was so backed up& busy that she barely had any time to really pay attention to all of her clients. I kept thinking to myself that if she had probably hired some help it’d be a lot easier on her& it would keep her clients happy.
I wasn’t very satisfied with the color job… It was a root touch up& my roots were glowing. It wasn’t cute. And the cut, I don’t know what happened this second time around, but it didn’t grow out very nicely. The price for a touch up & cut was also unreasonable… I pretty much spent the same amount that I did when I got my hair colored the first time& that was all-​over color.
I’m sad to say I’m disappointed and I never returned.

I have wavy-​sometimes-​curly hair and have more or less kept the same layered hairstyle for the past seven years, maintained by several different stylists, none of which have lived up to the standard set by the first woman who gave me this style (she moved to Canada). I am extremely particular about my hair and it is important for me to have it cut by someone who understands wavy/​curly hair as well as what looks good on people with round-​ish faces.
I came into Shanghai Beauty Salon today with grown-​out, damaged tresses, and emerged from the place with neatly feathered layers, voluminous height (a must-​have for round faces), and full swept bangs. My new ‘do makes me look dollish and I love it.

A great place for updos!
Joyce is an excellent hair dresser. I suggest bringing in a photo of the updo you would like to have done. She talks to you before she gets started so she knows if there’s any specific changes you want to do to the hair style you chose. She also checks with you in between the process of the updo to make sure you are okay with the way things are going.
I did a Carrie Underwood inspired half-​updo for a wedding I was attending. I was very satisfied with Joyce’s work. She spent a little over an hour just to make my hair absolutely perfect. My hair stayed intact the whole day and night.
There’s plenty of available parking in the residential areas nearby.
This is a very affordable beauty salon and I will return again to get my hair cut!

I had a hair emergency right before i was due to be a guest at a wedding on a Saturday. I called every place on Taraval and this was the only place who was willing to take me.
I ran to the salon and was greeted kindly, waited only a short time and whisked into a chair.
My hair was washed (after the mess I made of trying to style it) and then dried.
She styled my hair quickly and wish a lot of skill.
I am SO PLEASED I was able to get in and out of there in time, I could NOT have thanked her enough and I plan on going back for styling instead of doing it myself.

Im writing a review for my sister (: to be honest. In the beginning we were sort of let down by the three star reviwe we saw down there. but we decided to try it out anyways lol. Soo we went to shanghai beauty salon to try that place out, since most of the reviews on Unilocal were good and it was nearby us at that time. So this was the first time my sister went out to get a haircut outside (my sister has non-​layered hair its just cut straight across). She was so nervous and scared. When we went in, we had to wait a bit for her to finish the other person. When she qas done it was our turn! joyce was really nice and asked us what we wanted. My sister didnt want a MAJOR CHANGE. Just a trim and some little layers on the sides. Joyce could tell my sister was nervous and said «okay, dont worry» and starting snipping away. I was watching her cut my sisters hair from behind. I saw she did EXACTLY What we told her. She listens to you. An does EXACTLY how u want it. I was very surprised. I noticed she used a hair razor and haircutting scissors. My sister was very happy and satisfied about herhaircut when we went out. Surprisingly the haircut only took like 20minutes or less. It was quite fast. The price was so worth it! $ 15 only! *Gasp* lol. Joyce is pretty: D Overall, i would recommend this place (:

I’ve been going to Joyce since I can remember. probably since I was 13. Now, I’m 23 and have never went to anyone else. She truly knows hair! I’m glad she is on Unilocal because you need to discover her! She not you typical Asian business lady… not in it for the money… she cares greatly how your experience is and how you want your hair to look. Everytime I come, I leave the creative thinking to her because I know she will take care of me. Don’t worry, she won’t upsell you (like most businesses) because she just wants the best for you!
By the way, she doesn’t overprice — affordable and HIGH QUALITY!
I highly recommend her! I will be a lifelong customer :)

Very great place to get your hair done for men and women, and children!
Nice clean friendly environment, also have really competitive prices. Wouldn’t mind going here again!
