The restaurant changed their name to Winchester Chef. Lunch is about $ 6.50−6.75 per person after tax. Along with your meal, you also get a side dish of salad with sweet hoison sauce over it, a small bowl of hot & sour soup, choice of white rice or fried rice, hot tea and a fortune cookie. Overall, I enjoyed my order of the beef and string beans and the size of the entrée was pretty reasonable. The best part was the place was pretty busy during the lunch rush so that was a good sign for the new owners. They also have a special where If you buy three lunch entrees, the fourth lunch entrée is FREE! So it’s great if you have family, friends and co-workers who want to try this place out for lunch.

I don’t know who is paying these people to write reviews on P&R, but this is the worst place in San Jo hands down. They have«changed ownership»(read change the name of the restaurant) 3−4X in the last 2 yrs, and the food is still the same crappy food. I would not take my worst enemy there. The honey walnut prawns I had there were some of worst I have ever tasted. If you are looking for good chinese food, go to Cupertino or Milpitias, as this restaurant is utter crap!

Originally from LA, the land of food(good Asian food at that), I am always on the prowl for yummy, cheap Chinese food, which I crave every now and then. I read the other reviews on Unilocal about this place, but not to rag on the other reviewers I was a little skeptical since good Chinese food is not always what it’s made out to be by guay lo. :) I would’ve given this only 3 stars if not for the extra friendly service we got. Now don’t get me wrong. P&R Gourmet is not bad Chinese food, certainly not the best, but the food is very nearly authentic and about as good as you can get around here(around this neighborhood specifically). In fact, their dishes are pretty darn good. My Chinese is not super fluent, and my mother ordered entirely in Chinese, so I can’t translate what we got specifically. Two meat dishes and an eggplant dish. The ingredients were very fresh – the veggies still crisp and everything still piping hot from the wok. The major downside – I hate to be nitpicky buuuutt – their rice. Not only do they charge you $ 1.00 per person but the quality of it is really low in the sense that the usual sticky, white, fluffiness of top notch Asian rice… not there. Panda Express-like quality, but if that’s your thing then yum-o? Apparently there are also two menus: a Chinese and English one. I imagine they are the same menu with the exception of the linguistic difference of course. The pricing is pretty standard; not expensive. I think there are lunch specials that are cheaper. Portions are moderately big. No complaints here. Unfortunately, the other reviews were right about the place being relatively empty. Definitely not the food nor cleanliness at fault here. Maybe it’s a feng shui thing? Who knows, but hopefully they’re here to stay…

Don’t expect ambiance, upscale décor or attentive courteous service. Instead, expect low prices, generous portions, abrasive, direct suggestions from waitstaff and efficient, effective lunch meals. Beef noodle soup is a specialty and can fill 3. Each time my work colleagues come to P&R for lunch, we end up with leftovers because the portion sizes are enormous. Siu loong bao(steamed pork dumplings that explode hot and oily meat juices upon being bitten) are fantastic. Definitely a good alternative to the corporate caf.

I love this place. They’ve got the best chow fun this side of… yum! I ordered some stuff to go and imagine my shock and horror as my friends and I opened our food and… no steam rice. They charge extra for steamed rice. So be sure to order some and not be up the creek without a paddle. I’ve rarely been to chinese restaurants where you get charged for rice. Other than that. Love this place. I’ve eaten everything on the menu once and I find I love their chow fun the most. I hope this place sticks around longer than the other predecessors.

Excellent won-ton soup and wonderful dishes at P&R gourmet. Friendly service, generous portions. I hope they’re here to stay, as this restaurant has been changing management as often as I change my shirt.

We got take out from this place. As far as Chinese take out goes, it’s pretty run of the mill. My Chinese boyfriend asked the guy at the counter in Mandarin for his recommendation and was handed the secret Chinese-only menu. The boyfriend told me it didn’t have any beef dishes on it. If you happen to read/speak Chinese, check out both menus for the most options. My guess is that this place won’t be open in 6 months. The location is one of those jinxed places and the restaurant was almost empty when we went to pick up food.

We’ve been trying to find a good Chinese restaurant close to home. My husband noticed the Grand Opening signs while doing errands so we decided to go there for dinner. At about 5:00 on a Sunday night there were only four other people in the restaurant. The servers were nice, friendly and attentive but not intrusive. We started with pot stickers, which were not bad but not really good either. They were rather doughy, almost under-cooked, but the filling was OK. My husband had the Szechwan Beef, which would have been fine except it was very salty. I had the Kung Pao Prawns, OK again, but even with lots of visible peppers it wasn’t spicy at all. We also had BBQ Pork Fried Rice, OK again but bland. So the over all experience was not really bad, but like my husband said, «I wouldn’t take anyone here.» I guess we’ll keep looking.

I’ve been trying to find a good place for Chinese breakfast in the south bay. Chinese breakfast usually means shao bing, yo tiao(fried cruller; Chinese donuts), soy milk, etc. Upon seeing an ad in the local Chinese newspaper advertising a new restaurant serving Chinese breakfast, we decided to check it out. As soon as we walk in the place, we thought that we had come to the wrong place. The restaurant had a large open counter area with kitchen directly behind it like a fast food place(think Panda Express). Definitely do not wear your nice clothes here as the smell(though aromatic) from the kitchen will get into your clothes. We ordered the soy milk and you tiao, but there was no shao bing. This is a sign that the place is not a Northern Chinese place as shao bing is more commonly found in Shandong and Northern Chinese restaurants. Being a Shanghai style restaurant, it did have Xiao Long Bao. We also ordered the scallion pancakes just to see how good it is. The soy milk and you tiao came first. Soy milk was pretty standard, but the you tiao looked and tasted very doughy. Although it was not not light and fluffy as it should be, it was fried decently so it was at least not oily. This cannot compare to a «real» you tiao from Taiwan, but at least it is edible. The XLB was also average. The skin was thicker than normal and the filling was slightly more dense than I’d like and there was just barely a little bit of soup. Overall it would not rank in the upper echelon of XLB in bay area. The scallion pancake came toward the end of the meal. Apparently this was their first day of business selling the breakfast small eats. The lone waiter was running around like crazy trying to take care all the tables(it was only 2⁄3 full). He also had to be the bus boy and cashier — the only thing he didn’t do was actually cook. Either way, the pancake was very doughy and hard with only a tiny bit of scallion — not very good. The chao mian dish came in a large plate. The noodles were standard factory style«oil noodle». Flavor was pretty standard, but the amount of ingredients was very lacking. I counted only 2 pieces shrimp and a few more pieces of chicken/pork. Definitely not worth the price. Overall, this place is not up to par yet in delivering a decent Chinese breakfast experience. The Shanghai dishes may hold some promise but I would not try again until they work out the grand opening issues in a couple of months.
