A southeast gem! Bringing the joy of good Mississippi comfort food to San Diego. Smothered chicken is amazing and of course I love their chicken gizzards fried to perfection with some hot sauce! Always have good daily specials on the menu. I am always satisfied when I get food from here.

Thank you trusty Unilocal app! I was down the street getting my car washed and needed to get dinner to take home. So happy I found this place! The daily special outside caught my eye ~ Catfish nuggets, 2 sides and cornbread $ 7.99. I was sold right away! I picked cabbage and red beans & rice for my sides. The fish was fried to order. There was another young man waiting for his order and we were both asked if we wanted to sample any of the other items. Yes! I got off the phone and walked right up to the counter! We tried the pork rib tips and beef & chicken gumbo. MMMMMM!!! That gumbo would have been perfect for Sunday’s rain. Next time definitely! The catfish was crispy and nicely seasoned. The cabbage had a nice bite to it, a little bbq flavor to the beans & rice. I don’t usually like cornbread in restaurants, but I really liked theirs. I only ate ½ and I’m still stuffed! I took a menu with me. You can call your order ahead, some items may not be available every day. Had I taken the time to look at the menu, I would have noticed their cake slices and ordered 7up cake. Next time!

Found this spot on Unilocal looking for barbecue. I can’t say I was extremely disappointed, but can’t say I was happy with them. I had brisket plate with a side of greens, yams, and macaroni. Brisket was almost all fat, threw more fat pieces away then I actually ate. My yams were tasty… But would have been way tastier if hey weren’t refrigerator cold. Greens were mediocre. Defiantly not my favorite. I can appreciate good food, but this spot just didn’t hit it for me. For the long drive it took for me to get to them… I’m sad to say I won’t be back!

Food is really good! Love the fried catfish! Only downfall is that not all menu items are always available! Gumbo neckbones and oxtails weren’t available. So just be prepared but they always have fish lol and that’s what I come here for!

After finishing up a hike at Sweetwater Reserve, we stopped in for lunch. This location use to be Louisiana Fried Chicken, but they never had chicken or were open during posted hours. Having been resurrected to a Mississippi joint we were excited to give it a try. Since the Chargers were playing we ordered our food to go. The sides and a few meats were in an open holding table of which I have serious reservations about the temperature of. Literally nothing looked appetizing, but for Unilocal’s sake I put aside my fears of food poisoning. Out of the 6 or so items visible, I only recognized half. The others were topped off with greasy, floating fat on water. We learned from other customers that it’s better to order in advance to avoid the wait. They were right, it look more than 30 minutes waiting with a van full of kids. It says on the menu that everything isn’t always available. I asked for the baked Mississippi catfish and was told you have to call ahead 4 hours to order and that’s only if they are making it that day. Apparently there isn’t a reliable day either to order that. I will say the to go boxes and containers were wrapped well in plastic and i was pleased they transported home well, but that’s about where the compliments end. We ordered 6 different sides and 3 meats in order to have the biggest variety. Both the fried catfish and chicken were overcooked and lacked any flavor. The macaroni tasted like it was made with processed cheese sauce. The green beans, collard greens and cabbage just tasted like water. The yams were good, not too sweet. The black eyed peas were cooked well but bland. The brisket was tender and juicy, the same fall apart you would get Crockpotting. The cornbread was also overdone and burned on both sides. Final verdict: The result was not worth the wait and we probably would not go back again. It just had no yum flavor or that«slap yo momma taste» that we love. Giving it 2 stars is a stretch. I’m more saddened people in San Diego can’t experience real soul food with the few imposters here.

I wanted to take a picture of my Gizzards but aye it all up LOL. I just moved to this area and had to try their gizzards. Awesomeness I always use to get it from Hoffmans off of Imperial but that shut down years ago. I am happy to say I found a place I can get my gizzard fix its was just right. Tender and not salty. Awesomeness

Ribs are extremely delicious! Falling of the bone. As well as Bbq chicken. They will hook you up too. I’m not a fan of their sides, but I’m pretty sure it’s good, just not for my taste. Still totally recommend. 5stars

If ya’ want a little bit of down home then this is your place… It reminded me of dinner at grandma’s house!!! Catfish, smothered chicken thighs, red beans and rice, collard greens with meat… I wish I had room for dessert cuz’ I’ll bet the banana pudding is as good as the rest of the meal… I’ll be going here to eat whenever I’m in town

I’ve been here a few times now & everything I’ve had here is good, but not to the point that, imo, makes it a standout. Fried tilapia was well seasoned & mostly moist but not greasy. The gizzards were OK but I’ve had better elsewhere. Collard greens are good but just need a little more flavor to them. Service & people working there are super friendly, and actually nothing I’ve had there is bad. I’ll continue to come by periodically because it’s somewhat convenient. There are other dishes I definitely want to try out there, and I intend on doing so.

Went here today for the first time. So good! One of the top spots here in San Diego. the lady at the front was amazing. She let u sample everything before buying. The cook is the only cook and he does his thing. Only thing I would say is need a lil extra salt for those who have stronger taste buds. Not too much space to eat there but they have carry out.

I really, really wanted to love this place. The woman at the register and the man in the kitchen were extremely nice and even brought my food to me in my car when I was multitasking. Now to the nitty gritty. Fried snapper– salty, not crispy. Yams– too touch achingly sweet Collard greens– very bland, flavorless, almost like it was simply boiled in water– where’s the smokey, slightly salty flavor from ham hocks or the like, onions, garlic? Anything? Cornbread– super dry I’ve had my fair share of soul food, but this is mediocre at best. Pains my heart to have written this. I hope the owner reads this and consider changing some things around cuz I’d love mom and pops like this to be successful

Friendly service but the food was not that good. Mac and cheese had no cheese and was watery the green beans were mush and watery. Fried chicken had good flavor but there was very little meat on them but they were moist.

So far I haven’t tasted anything here that I didn’t like. Being from The South, I can vouch that this is really good Soul Food. The food here reminds me of food from back home in Texas minus the«It’s too hot to work in a kitchen» attitude. What have I tried? Well I have sampled just about everything they offer: Fried chicken, smothered and grilled pork chops, greens, green beans, mac and cheese, rice and gravy… I could go on. It’s all good. My order was placed to go and I like how they individually wrapped every side dish to avoid spillage while traveling. This was a very nice touch and also kept everything extremely warm until I got home.

THANKYOUBANKHEAD!!! This place is a true blessing for SD. The closest food I can get to what I used to eat, living in the south. I LOVETHISPLACE!!! The menu is incredible. I want everything. Had to go with the snapper, collards and black eyed peas. The woman at the counter man my knees quiver when she asked me if I wanted pork with my collards and if I wanted my peas with rice. Haven’t heard that in a very long time and let me know I was in for a big treat. Couldn’t wait to dive in and decided to eat here. The snapper is great. Love the batter. They put some extra pepper in their batter that is just delicious. Fresh flaky scrumptious snapper inside. The fried casing was a little chewy, but so delicious. Collards were great. Love the way they chop their greens, water ratio and some delicious chunks of pork to give that natural salt compliment. Black eyed peas are so good. Never can get these out here and their’s are done well. The subtle earth flavor of these made my week. Cornbread game could be stepped up a little, but I did come mid day, so I understand on that. Can’t wait to get back here and try some gumbo, salisbury steak, ribs, brisket, yams and everything else. LOVETHISPLACE!

This place is not very well known, but if you are on the hunt to find some cuisine from the south, you will find it in a small outdated strip mall in Spring Valley. I stopped in after work to take something to go for dinner. I was initially going to order the fried fish sandwich, but at the last minute changed it to the Southern Meatloaf Sandwich with a side of house made Macaroni and Cheese. The sandwich was only $ 4 and $ 2 for the mac and cheese. The meatloaf came on whole wheat bread, and the meatloaf itself was not even slices that cover the length and width of the bread, but chunks that were strategically places around the sandwich, so the drawback was that the meatloaf pieces tended to fall out of the sandwich. However, on a good note, the meatloaf was quite good. The meatloaf was very moist, thick, and savory, and really liked the way it came with bits of vegetables. it was seasoned well and cooked to a medium which I personally appreciated. What would of been great, is they would of ladled some gravy onto the meatloaf before closing it up with the bread. The sandwich comes with the basic meatloaf and bread, but you build it up from there and ingredients that you want. I added lettuce and tomatoes, and I could not believe I forgot the cheese! The mac and cheese was very good. The macaroni was well cooked and came with lot of great cheese. I believe that its was once creamy, upon its creation, but it being towards the end of the day, it was thicker and stickier, but tasted great nevertheless. I would eat this mac and cheese again for sure. The owner and employees here are very nice. I was given a rib tip taster and it was fantastically tender and well flavored with their house sauce. These will be my next order indeed.

I absolutely love this place! I’m from down south and I needed a place in california to give me some of that good olé fashion home made cooking. I would recommend this place to anyone and have been a loyal customer for many years!
