There are a growing number of very good to excellent Mexican casas in the Trenton area, and I am planning to visit all of them. This week, I found El Taco Picante(The Spicy Taco) on Deklyn Avenue just off of Lalor Street. It sits in what looks to have been a small convenience store. There are still a lot of large refrigeration units along the walls, but many of them stand empty and not used by this enterprise. The front of the house is brightly painted red with Mexican flags draped over the entrance into the rear of the shop where the kitchen, storage, and large pool table are located. My overall impression is that the joint could be a lot cleaner compared to its competition. My sampling of their lunch menu leads in the same direction. My Torta de Carnitas(Pulled Pork Sandwich), was good, but lacked the ingredients found in the better creations. The meat was ample, but bland. The hot sauce on the table helped, but not as much as originally cooking the meat in richer sauce on the grill would do. There was plenty of Lettuce, Tomato, and Onion, but not Fresh Cheese to offer its textural creaminess. The roll was fresh, but looked like it had been at the bottom of the bag because its surface was cracked throughout from rough handling. The Tamarind soda pop was great. With a little TLC and more attention to putting out first quality dishes, El Taco Picante could be a great asset to this neighborhood.

Ordered again. I can’t get enough of this place. I thought I hated salsa but I guess I wasn’t eating the right stuff. Everything is too Americanized here. This is authentic Mexican salsa, bursting with flavor. I’m telling all of you, you have to try this place! Edit: It’s been a few weeks, are they still open? They’re no longer listed on Grubhub and I’ve tried calling but no answer.

I was delighted to see a new Mexican place pop up on my list of GrubHub delivery spots. I got a steak quesadilla and chorizo tacos. Food arrived quickly, was not as hot as I would’ve liked but still not cold enough to make a big deal of it. The food is authentic and delicious. I’ll take that over a little temperature loss any day. Ordering from them again tonight.
