I don’t have any complaints, my expectations were just much higher given some of the reviews. Definitely not the best BBQ place I’ve been to. My BBQ sauce didn’t come on the side, but it was good sauce so I didn’t mind. It was pretty standard, I got the pork baby back ribs with fries and green beans. I ordered takeout and the prices on the Unilocal menu are not accurate. My meal came to $ 19.99 plus tax. It was supposed to take 20 minutes, took closer to 30 so I waited… but that’s not a big deal. It was good, and I’ll go again. But I wouldn’t say that it was the best I’ve had.

For all the places to eat at the ocean front this place is not bad. We get the pulled pork. Sandwiches are big and pretty good. We like it and will be back!

I paid Beach Bully a visit on this past Wednesday for dinner before going to a show at the Norva. The menu spanned multiple panels and I was instantly overwhelmed but I decided to order the regular Carolina pork BBQ sandwich platter($ 6.99) with macaroni & cheese and dill potato salad. The pork was definitely prepared Carolina-style with a vinegar base. With the house and mahogany sauces, the tanginess was tolerable. The mac & cheese tasted like your typical mac & cheese and super soft. The potato salad might’ve been the highlight of my platter. Huge chunks of tender potatoes tossed in dill and mayo. Great service and decent BBQ for the area. The next time I’m in town I wouldn’t mind re-visiting Beach Bully to try the brisket and the ribs.

If you enjoy long waits and poor service then this is the place! I watched the help go on break and eat lunch while customers waited. Like A restaurant in the Soviet Union.

We stopped in to this establishment for lunch last Thursday. The parking lot was full of police cars — the beginnings of bad jokes including pigs and donuts started rattling in my brain… This place has been at this location since 1997 and the interior shows it in some places. It’s got an odd layout with offices located right inside the entrance. Red checkered table cloths and kitschy items dot the space. Some cool wrought-iron Beach Bully logo’d light fixtures hang over booths in the back. There’s a good number of seats in the well worn, split-level dining area. The menu is pretty extensive(website claims about 70 items) and is a bit overwhelming. There were several handwritten specials posted under the menu as well, if you weren’t confused enough. All I wanted to know were my barbecue options, and it was a challenge to find. My business partner and I ended up ordering the pulled pork platter with two sides — cole slaw and mac & cheese. Lunch was delivered to our table minutes after we ordered. The sandwiches were large and filled generously with pulled pork which seamed to have a very light, very thin, vinegar based«sauce». The pork was a bit dry — over cooked — and very lightly seasoned. The table had a bottle of their house barbecue sauce which was a ketchup, vinegar base with sugar and spices and a slight touch of heat. It went well with the pork and added the needed moisture and flavor. They also had two other sauces on a station with napkins, utensils, etc. We tried both — one was an overwhelmingly ketchup based sauce. I’m not a fan of Hunts ketchup, which is what I’d guess they used(I’m a Heinz fan) so this was not to my liking — just kinda bland; too much liked a spiked ketchup. The other is what I believe they use on their Brisket — also a ketchup base but had brown sugar and other spices that go well with beef. It was richer and had more levels of flavor. This was probably my favorite. The slaw here is really fresh. Minced cabbage in a thin, peppery sweet mayo. The only thing missing for me might be carrots. Delicious none the less. The mac & cheese was mushy and bland. Did not seem fresh made. If I was judging at a competition I’d give them a 6 — average.

We came across this place coming from the aquarium. It’s about one mile from Springhill Suites. They have tables inside but we only ordered take out. So we ordered the bbq king sized rack of ribs that could easily be shared by two. It came with two sides for $ 19.99 for our side’s we had the mac and cheese. Also the beefy bean’s. Naw didn’t care for the bean’s. The mac and cheese was to my liking. It was soft but cheesy. It wasn’t hard and crunchy if that’s what your looking for. I like mine both ways. I’m pretty versatile when it comes to that. The Ribs was delicious nice and tender. I enjoyed it got the Spicer sauce on the side which really wasn’t all that spicy but it still was good. They got the food ready quickly which l could appreciate since after the aquarium we were very hungry. I understand they sell alcohol as well. They satisfied my hunger and would return to check out some other items on the menu if in the Virginia Beach area in the future.

Our family favorite to stop whenever we are over in Virginia Beach. I’ve never strayed away from eating the brisket so I can’t tell you how anything else tastes, but I do love their brisket. Their sides are pretty good but I would like to see some tangier slaw and camp style beans. Service is always outstanding and friendly.

It may be a difference in taste, but I wasn’t crazy about the pulled pork cole slaw flavoring. The hush puppies were hot and crispy! The staff was very nice.

Been here a few times since working down the street at the Doubletree Hotel. What I’ve had so far has been delicious! The prices are decent and the portions are generous. First thing I’ve tried was the pulled pork sandwich. Nice portion of pulled pork on a soft bun. Flavor is great, but wish it came with cole slaw on top of the pork. Also tried the sliced beef sandwich with onions and cheese. It was like having a cheeseburger but with better flavor. Had the fried chicken, nice and crispy on the outside and juicy on the inside. Today, I decided to try the fried flounder filet sandwich. It was fried nice and flavorful. The only sides I’ve tried here have been the onions rings and Mac & cheese. Onions rings are good, but are frozen/store bought. The Mac and cheese is good, but nothing there that makes it stand out. They have a few sauces that you can try. The tiger sauce is like a horseradish type sauce that’s great for the onion rings. The mahogany sauce is a sweet bbq sauce that’s nice on the bbq sandwich.

It was my first time coming to a BBQ restaurant in the south and i was expecting it to be a little bit better. It was the closest place to our hotel, however, it’s pretty good if your starving and not looking to travel much. It does have parking which is a plus if you’re by the shore. I ordered a delicious meal, but the group that I was with was not pleased at all with their meal. I also think they need a little bit of help with cooking french fries as they were soaked in oil…

Came here based on a friends recommendation and so glad we stopped by! The place was pretty empty on a Wednesday at 1:30. You go up to the front counter straight from the door to order. They then give you a number and will bring you your food to your table once it’s ready. I got their Carolina BBQ sandwich with Mac and cheese and slaw. My husband got the sandwich they are famous for which was their sliced beef sandwich with cheese and onions with a side of hush puppies bs slaw. Everything was very very yummy! Great southern BBQ! While I enjoyed my sandwich I think I would get the sliced beef in the future as that was just heaven! It’s basically a much nicer beef and cheddar like you can get at Arby’s but 100 times more amazing. Certainly worth checking out if you are in the area! I’m already craving them again!

This is a stand along restaurant with its own parking lot, 4 blocks from Atlantic Ave. We ordered fried chicken, beef brisket sandwich and(queen) baby back ribs, with fries and potato salad. Fried chicken takes 20 minutes to make and they let us know when we placed the order. The portion was generous. The price was reasonable. Most importantly, the food was delicious. Everything had the«from scratch» taste. And it was lightly seasoned so the meat had flavor, but allowed you to add additional barbecue sauce to the meat. It was too bad that we were leaving VA Beach in the morning. Otherwise, we would definitely go there for lunch again before heading home.

Better than average beef brisket. It was slightly sweet, smoky, and very tender. I’m not a huge fan of the pulled pork — the vinegar flavor that they cooked it with was a little too much for me. It wasn’t overpowering, but it wasn’t subtle either. With my 2 meats, I ordered Cole slaw and hush puppies. The coleslaw was pretty decent but I was disappointed in the hush puppies. I am used to a round and dense hush puppy with lots of flavor. These were long and narrow, almost like a fish stick. And the flavor was slight, not bold. Overall, I may hit this place up the next time I’m back in town and have a craving for bbq. But it wouldn’t be my first stop in town, and I wouldn’t be that sad without it.

It’s 4th of July, so my girlfriend recommended this rib spot. We decided to check it out. The décor is country style … and the servers and cashiers were super helpful. They took the time to go over the menu and make recommendations. We selected KING Meal(½ chicken; NC style pulled pork; queen rack of ribs and two sides). We requested everything without sauce. They did not disappoint. The ribs fell off the bone! The pulled pork was not wet and had superb flavor. The chicken was A+.(Actually, I would recommend no sauce – it was not needed). This is a hidden local gem in VA Beach. Highly recommend this spot for BBQ. Plus, A+ for the servers and cashiers.

We walked to the Beach Bully one Saturday evening for dinner after a long day in the sun on a friends recommendation. The food at Beach Bully is a solid 3 and a half star. I would normally bump a place like this up to 4, but I really don’t like the set up. I wanted a restaurant dining experience, not a fast food one. Beach Bully is the worst of both worlds. We entered, and waited at the front for a minute before realizing no hostess would be greeting and seating us. Made our way up the ramp and felt rushed to quickly decide on something even though we didn’t get much of a chance to look over the menu. I ordered the Bully BBQ combo, my daughter got the king size rib platter(to share!) and my husband got a forgettable sandwich. We then paid — but with a credit card and were told they would bring it out to us. This was where I was left in an uncomfortable predicament — I don’t like tipping in advance but I didn’t have any cash. In addition to that, I wasn’t sure how much effort the staff put into waiting on us. Turns out — it’s not much. Drinks, serve yourself. Napkins and sauces, serve yourself. Their staff brings you your food, and picks up your plate when you are done. I can’t justify tipping 20% for this amount of service, no matter how friendly the person is. For this reason, I rounded the stars down. I either want a fast food experience — order, get food, take care of your own meal and trash, no tip or I want a full service experience. As far as the food goes, it was definitely borderline 4 stars. The pulled pork was tasty, the brisket was solid and the ribs — though not fall off the bone tender — were certainly worth the money and the king sized portion was HUGE. The tiger sauce is the best thing about the place, and the house BBQ sauce is good too. I thought the mac and cheese was mushy and bland, and the mahogany sauce should have been labeled ‘ketchup’. We probably won’t be back for awhile if ever again… next time we are in Virginia Beach, we will likely opt to try new experiences rather than repeat this one.

Historic spot for decent BBQ at the Oceanfront. The service is quick & casual. Nothing fancy or much to brag about but I did find the house sauces very tasty. Lots of indoor seating as well as on the patio. Definitely worth a stop!

BBQ is pretty good! There’s a variety of food offered here and I haven’t had a bad dish yet. I like their chicken BBQ Sandwich with their mac and cheese. The fries and potato salad are okay. The fries came out kinda soft(I like crispy fries) and the potato salad has a lot of mayo and herbs, not the mustard potato salad I was imagining with my BBQ. They don’t have fresh brewed sweet tea, which really caught me off guard. The Chicken BBQ Sandwhich Platter is about $ 10 and it’s not that big, but it should fill you up. Their fried chicken is fresh! Be sure to wait about 20 minutes and everyone else is done their food too before you get yours. Overall, BBQ is what you should try here… duh!

We did carry-out from here after a long day on the beach, sharing a full rack of ribs(their«King» size order), some fries, mac and cheese and hushpuppies. Oh — and I had a salad so unmemorable that I almost forgot to add it here. * Ribs — these were good! It was a large portion and seemed like more than a single rack, although they were shorter in length than I thought they’d be. One«King» order was plenty for two to share, and they came with extra sauce. * Mac and cheese and fries — meh. Carry-out fries are never good, and the mac and cheese was kind of mushy. There have to be better options. * Hushpuppies — good, basic hushpuppies. A large order was oodles — we didn’t eat them all. * Salad — $ 5 for some iceburg, shredded carrot and diced tomato? Please. Overpriced and not all that great, but I was craving something fresh. The jury is out on whether we’ll return, but if we do, I’d vote for eating-in and seeing if that improves the overall experience.

I’m not sure what happen? I have been to Beach Bully for a couple of years now and my company always used them for our catering needs. But today the food was not the Beach Bully I’ve known it to be. There wasn’t any flavor, any smoke, any wow factor that I known them to be. What a disappointment. Maybe they’re under a new management, or something that would describe the reasoning for what I had today. I had chicken BBQ sandwich it tasted like the chicken was cooked and then slathered with a lot of BBQ sauce, same with the brisket. The brisket was nicely thin so it wasn’t tough at all. The BBQ sauce was sweet but if that’s what you like in a BBQ sauce, then it would be OK. The baked beans were still a little hard like it still needed more cooking. Ok that’s all I have to say. I can go on and on, but I have to find out if they changed to new management…

Sidekick intern and I stopped in after the Polar Plunge this weekend. I’m not the biggest fan of this kind of food but Beach Bully does a pretty damn good job. I picked up the pulled pork and beef brisket combo with green beans and fries as my side. The pulled pork was okay but I certainly enjoyed the beef brisket. Make sure you try all the sauces they offer. Of the two dark colored ones I liked the one where you can taste the vinegar more. So that’s my preference. Green beans were decent as were the fries. The beef brisket was the sure winner. Service can be a little crazy. You order at the counter and then your order number gets called out. When you’re trying to talk to someone at your table and numbers are being thrown out there it makes for a little craziness. The whole here’s your number on your table and we’ll find you concept(Jason’s Deli) would work well in this instance. Not bad… I’ll be back at some point.
