It is a coffee shop. Food was good as was service. Not kid friendly, but it is a coffee shop after all.

The apparent owner, a scruffy pubic hair faced as*hole, does not seem how to one-on-one communication in dealing with people can be done with decorum. He pointed middle fingers at a customer he was yelling at about something that should have been handled out of the sight of customers on a holiday weekend. He seems like a complete HOTHEAD just from eavesdropping on his vulgar verbiage. BOTTOMLINE: he seems like a loose cannon, at the very least, and we can all sense who he wants for President in November! Make your own choice on this one, but this guy is DANGEROUS to the Virginia Beach Oceanfront — avoid this Java Surf, and the other.

My siblings and I were leaving Comicon(located at the Pavillion) and we had a blast. After three hours of walking around booths and meeting our favorite characters we were starved. I looked on Unilocal what was nearby and Java Surf Café popped up on the radar. Their previous location being tucked away on 25th street. I wanted to try them again and saw in disbelief their whole place was gone. Glad to find that the whole time they were building a bigger, better, and even brighter location on the corner of 19th street. A max of 5 vehicles in their parking lot, you can park on the side of the street. Theres a little stage in the corner that takes up a little of lot. Surrounded the lot is this beautifully painted mural with intense colors and an organic design. Kind of makes you want to to stand in front of it and say«hey take a pic of me in front this!» The exterior of the building is a bright orange with open glass windows peering natural light inside. It’s hard not to miss. We went inside and even the interior had more charms. Shark-boards swimming above on the ceiling. Vintage belt-driven ceiling fans, reminds me of the machinery you would see in an assembly line. We were immediately greeted by our server and she sat us near a booth seat next to the window. I ordered the Funky Monkey $ 7 for the kids(peanut butter, nutella, banana, and fruits all wrapped in a whole grain tortilla). I created a wrap with turkey, feta, spinach, avocado under the«Make Your Own» section for $ 7. The kids really enjoyed their meal. I ended up finishing my entire wrap because I was hungry. The food was fresh and tasty. Even the owner greeted us and asked how everything was. Will definitely be back.

Deliciously well planned menu. Coffee was awesome, staff was very friendly, owner has attention to detail. Hubs had a wrap and I had the fruit oatmeal. Strongly recommend this place, you won’t regret it!

We really enjoyed the stop today. Of course we were particularly hungry for real food just having come from the convention center and probable alternative of overpriced junk food. The staff was very friendly and it had a new-gen feel mixed with the beach/surfing feel. Food was fresh and unique making this a definite return trip. The salad was very fresh and tastey and the son seemed to really enjoy his fruit and yogurt parfait laced with honey and granola. The Cortado was the closest I’ve seen to an authentic Cuban Cortado… well done.

I was super impressed with this place. I was at WRV and wanted coffee, so I saw this place and decided to give it a try. I’m glad I did. The coffee was great, so was the food, and so was the atmosphere. The staff is super friendly, and I’m pretty sure the owner greeted me at the door and said salutations when I left. The waitress, Lauren, was very nice. She wasn’t my waitress, but I set at the bar near the waitress station and we struck up a conversation while I was waiting for my food… which was excellent, by the way. I had The Frank — an everything bagel with cream cheese, capers, lox and red onion. Big enough to share and priced reasonable, this fancy breakfast classic is a must try! I also ordered a coconut latte, which was well balanced and arrived with cute latte art of a leaf! The ambiance is lovely — surfer modern with a modern art twist. The dinning room is large and bright with high ceilings, and there is cute ocean themed surfer art all around. The industrial meets pop of color ocean fun really works for this place. The nicest asset that I under fortunately did not get to enjoy was the outdoor seating and hang out area complete with corn hole. The day I went in it was cold outside.

Met my niece here for breakfast. Great place! Tried two of the coffees. The medium roast coffee(sorry they had a special name for it, but I forgot) was very very good. I had the custom breakfast sandwich which was very good. I got it in the wheat tortilla and they grilled it. Yum! One suggestion: Have the waitresses carry a pad to write down your order. Even though the waitress came back and asked me a second time what I wanted on my sandwich, it was still wrong … but very very good.

This is for my ‘frank’ bagel. Frankly, it’s a bit shite. The cream cheese is barely spread on at all, there are by my count 4 pieces of onion on here, but really it’s less than three because those other two are tiny. There are 4 capers on it. $ 10 — bit of a rip off. DONOTCOMEHERE.

Awesome people, food, and the best espresso on the beach. The espresso bean is smooth and low bitterness, and the barista’s are properly trained. They focus on local, but not just the food, as just about everything in the place from their coffee roasting vendor to their wall art is local. Big supporters of ViBe Creative District. If you’re gluten free, paleo, or another limited diet, they will modify without an upcharge. The gluten free sandwich bread is great. All the breakfast bowls are also offered as in a spinach bowl, which is what I always get and love. The smoothie is also fantastic. Fast wifi, good music, lots of sunlight, and super friendly staff. You’ll usually see the owner Dwayne hanging out with customers and having fun.

Why do I constantly go here? The drinks are pricey and the food is not that great, but I cannot stop going. I love it. The ambiance is just so relaxed and comfortable. I could(and do) hang out for hours. I always have the after taste of baking soda after drinking their lattes.

Wow!!! This is my new FAVORITE breakfast place!!! My friend wanted to meet here ~ which I had never been and I am an instant fan. The staff is great, décor is great, the restaurant is nice & clean and the food is super good! I ordered the Hawaii Melt and my hubby ordered the Baltic Melt ~ they are so good & tasty. Also, they have Costa Rica coffee that is amazing and if you don’t like one ~ they had another like Sumatra to try; self serve with the half & half & sugars with refills. I can’t wait to try everything on their menu. They have a cute little area outside to sit and watch traffic roll by if you like, it’s along a cute little side patio area in the front. They have two convenient parking areas on the other sides, easy to get to. Nice, cozy, clean, friendly, tasty ~ I love this place!

I have to say first off the service was excellent! Probably the best customer service i’ve experienced in the area. They were really great at answering all questions. A lot less pretentious place than some of the other places around the area, considering i’m not a hipster. The coffee is wonderful. The food was eclectic and priced reasonably as well. Will definitely come back and take out-of-towners here too

Ordered the The Kahuna breakfast panini and it was absolutely out of this world. The coffee was insanely good. My sister ordered the Hawaiin Melt and it was equally delicious. Great prices. Great portion sizes. Our server Brittany was incredibly friendly and her recommendations were spot on. I will definitely be returning again and again and telling people all about this little gem.

If you’re looking for the perfect local coffee spot, look no further. Java Surf is truly the end-all-be-all of local coffee culture in VA Beach. Swung in with 3 buddies early on a Saturday morning after a trail run at First Landing. Not crowded at all, promptly seated, and super friendly/personable staff. We were stoked to learn the coffee was«serve yourself,» so for about $ 2 that’s TOUGH to beat for organic roasts(pretty sure they’re 3rd Party Certified coffees, too…). Java Surf seems to take the eco-responsibility thing seriously, and while that’s not my primary consumer driver, it’s a nice touch. No disposable cups; they have various different eclectic mugs for use in the shop. Once you’re ready to roll, you can get a disposable roadie cup. SERIOUS value… The food was awesome. Like, tough to beat. I enjoy local eateries, and for the wraps/sandwiches, no other place comes close. I can’t remember the exact name, but I got a wrap with pineapple and a sriracha mayo egg wrap that was the perfect blend of fresh, sweet, and spicy. There were many choices that looked delicious, and without question I’ll be back for more samplings off their menu. Do yourself a favor and stop going to whatever national chain you’re visiting or gas station coffee bar you frequent. Java Surf is the new jam.

Loving the new café on Mediterranean!!! This shop has been busy the past few times when I have visited, but never more than a 5min wait. The menu hasn’t strayed from the original café, it still has bagel melts and panini’s. I did see that they are offering more baked goods and added a few more salads to the menu. Drinks are always superb, current obsession is the chai latte(spicy). Can’t go wrong with any of the coffee’s as that is their specialty, Im a smore’s fan!!! The staff is awesome too, ordered a bagel melt last week and it came out alittle to melted(burnt). I didn’t even have to say anything, the waitress came over an took care of it before I could open my mouth! Great service! The owners are just as catering and fully want you to enjoy your experience .You can see them their any given day, they truly love what they do. Keep local businesses alive!!!

I stopped in today to grab a drink and I quickly saw why it was such a popular spot. The interior was bright and cheerful, and the artwork had me staring. The owner, Dwayne, greeted me at the counter and despite the crowd said they would take care of me as quickly as possible. He didn’t say it in a brush-off way, more with a sincere smile. I had already eaten so I just wanted a coffee, and I went with a cappuccino to make an accurate comparison to the dozens of other places in town where I have drank cappuccino. I enjoyed my drink greatly, and will definitely be back soon to try other drinks and their food menu.

Though it has been a while, since they had first opened their new location as a matter of fact, as a returning customer I leave them using quite a strategic mathematical equation with these 5 stars. lol. Starting with my peanut butter latte. It I’m sad to say was not nearly as delicious as it had been on my first visit there but still, above average. :-( NOW my lunch however… I must say yet again was untouchable by far. I keep forgetting the name its a chicken pesto sandwich thing that is so delicious that I not only ate the half that was supposed to be lunch but I completely seemed to transform into fat kid status and devoured what I was saving for my dinner. I did this driving in my car on the way home. Ummm. Soooo good. Oh an to top off my visit I mentioned I was a returning customer right. Though not since they had originally opened. Their customer service is on point. From there basic staff to the owner they are all extremely kind an attentive, which is Alot more than I can say for other places in the area. I hadn’t been there in months and the owner not only recalled who I was but remembered my daughter and asked how she had been.
That right there, treating each an every customer whether regular or not like they are important is one of the main things no matter what that can make an establishment shine above the rest. If you live here or just visiting I highly recommend stopping on in, because ur missing out if you dont.

THELOCALSCOFFEESPOT. No better place to go on a sunny day before catching waves or on a chilly winter day to enjoy SUPREME grade coffee, lattes and espresso; did I mention the food? A full on FRESH healthy menu everything made to order. From the moment you walk in, Dwayne and his awesome staff will make your day with their coffee, food and vibrant smiles to match the awesome décor inside completed by local artist OnieTonie. A true staple in Virginia Beach. I always take friends and family from out of town and they fall in love! So if you are a local or from out of town head over to Java Surf, grab a latte listen to great music and make sure you grab a T– Shirt! :)

This is my favorite place to grab coffee in the morning. I’ve come to know the staff by name and some of the surfers who hang out regularly. The design is clean and inviting, I LOVE the Onie Tonie artwork, and every time I come in, I witness the restaurant changing for the better. The owners, Dwayne and Rachel, work harder than anyone I know. The food is fantastic and well-presented.

Java Surf makes my favourite espresso drinks in Virginia Beach and Norfolk! Their coffee beans all come from Williamsburg Coffee(which, if you aren’t familiar, are personally selected by one of the most knowledgable coffee connoisseurs in the world) and their drinks have been crafted and fine-tuned by Dwayne, owner and operator, with great care and attention to detail. I’ve had a lot of lattes and cappuccinos, in Richmond, Norfolk, VB, and NY, and I worked as a barista for almost two years, and I can easily say that Java Surf is among the best in terms of taste, buzz, and service. Java Surf is in the process of opening three new locations, in beautifully redesigned restaurants with really aesthetically pleasing walls(you’ll understand when you see them). And, to top it all off, their food(sandwiches, panini presses, salads, and the like) also rises to the high standards set by their drinks and coffee. So, in short, you can’t go wrong with Java Surf Café!

I can’t believe I haven’t reviewed this place yet! My husband and I have been coming here since they were a new café in their old location. Java Surf has always had outstanding breakfast food and coffee drinks. I must say, though, that since they’ve moved to the new location, I am much more likely to visit. The service is much quicker now with the larger staff and expanded kitchen. There is also more room for the guests. As always, the food is great. It’s simple and I like that. The menu size is just large enough for a fair amount of variety. My husband and I have both liked everything we’ve ever tried there. Also, I don’t typically venture away from plain coffee(because I like it), but this is one of the places I am compelled to order a latte or cappuccino because they are pretty much irresistible… for me, at least. Give them a shot. I’m willing to bet you will find something you like.

On a recent trip to Virginia Beach, I stumbled upon Java Surf. The ambience was comfortable and inviting and I was warmly greeted as soon as I walked in. As I scanned the menu, I noted the unique selection of specialty lattes and immediately felt like I was back home in Portland(the café mecca of the west coast). I got a Beach Blanket and absolutely loved it. Their food was also great, healthy and killer for the price. I’d highly recommend Java Surf to anyone in the area, a rare gem in VB.

After reading the many enthusiastic reviews of their old location, and running into a local who said their coffee was ‘life-changing’, I was looking forward to checking out this place on a recent trip to Virginia Beach to visit a friend. I can’t help but feel that either the place has drastically changed since moving to their new location, or everyone who was raving about this restaurant has never experienced good coffee or amazing food. Honestly, this place wasn’t terrible. But it wasn’t great, food or service wise. And when I’m back in the area for a visit, I don’t think I’ll be stopping here. A few nuggets from our visit: –Our waitress didn’t know the difference between the coffee drinks, and as they only offered about 5, she should have either known the difference between them, or offered to ask the barista right behind her. –When asked if they had ketchup, the waitress serving the table directly beside ours said,(direct quote), «We don’t serve anything fried. So we have no need for ketchup here.» Pretentious and condescending much? The table clearly was taken aback by her answer. Either say, «Sorry, we don’t. But we do have(insert other condiment here).» Also, your food isn’t great enough to warrant ruling out condiments, and right after she said this, someone came out of the kitchen with a sandwich and plate of chips(last time I checked, chips were fried). –For some reason it took a very long time to get our machiattos. Granted, it was sort of busy, but every time I looked over at the espresso machine no one was over there, and they had tons of staff. The coffee ended up coming with our food. I really hope this wasn’t on purpose, as I would hope that a breakfast/coffee place would know that generally people like to get their coffee right away to enjoy before the food arrives. –We were still finishing our meal when our waitress started taking away our plates, the second time I had to grab my plate to keep her from leaving with it with food still on it. Like I said, it was kind of busy but not so busy that there was a line and people were waiting for our table. I would say there were at least 5 – 7 other open tables, and we were only a two-seater anyway. She also took away my plate from under where I was writing my check — not a huge deal normally but after everything it just continued to show how clearly inexperienced the waitstaff is here. –Oh yeah, and the coffee certainly wasn’t ‘life-changing’, in fact, it was pretty underwhelming and watery. The food was equally ‘meh.’ We ended up heading to Three Ships down the block, which had much nicer and friendlier staff, way better coffee, great ambiance, and a pop-up waffle brunch special. Anyone looking for a weekend brunch — do yourself a favor and hit up Three Ships, unless you’re ok with a mediocre and rushed experience at Java Surf. Also, the outdoor seating is in the parking lot.
