Place ain’t great. Crossaint was ok. Same with the coffee. Service was slow(but friendly) despite it being almost empty in there. Still they had wifi and tables so if you just need a spot to answer some emails, you could do a whole lot worse. *Sidenote: To the lame middle age guys hitting on the cashier and asking«where she’s from» and other cheesy lines of her being exotic — please get a life and catch up with the rest of us!

A café with a phenominal vibe! Everything is fairly priced. New owner is the nicest, most generous guy you’ll meet. They use Illy coffee, which is significantly better than Starsucks. Great place to get things done over a lazy afternoon/evening without the insane bustle of lager coffee shops. They serve beer too. Someone else complained about the price of 2 sandwiches &2 lemonades, but I am looking at the menu and sandwiches is ate only $ 8 and lemonade is around $ 3. It takes 20 mins because they don’t mass produce stuff like Subway. I didn’t order any food but I think it’s relatively fairly price. Go to Redfin & look at cost of local real estate & you’ll probably sympathize with the price.

I work nearby Batter Bowl and come here often. I love this place. The pecan maple croissant is to die for and they use illy espresso(which I like). They do know how to make a dry cappuccino which gives them high marks in my estimation. They only have as much staff on duty as they need to so that means you may wait a bit during their slow times while the single barista fills an order before taking yours(which I see as good business sense and don’t mind). The staff can be shy but they are very nice if you are nice to them. This ISNOT a starbucks style machine, it is a locally owned bakery/café so leave your entitled«I want it now» attitude at the door and you’ll have a great experience. The open face sandwiches come with a side salad and are around $ 7. Since I can’t ever finish one in one sitting it is a steal of a price for me. Everything else is priced how you’d expect since it is in DC. I tend to pass on the cupcakes, bagels, and standard fare, they aren’t anything to write home about, but if you try their cookies or more«fancy» baked goods(croissants, tarts, etc) you’ll see where their strength is. OH, and do yourself a favor, get the coconut almond black tea at some point!

Great coffee and a nice setting, generally pretty chill. Prices are pretty decent too which is remarkable for DC. Once H St steps up its game things may change but for now it feels like a neighborhood secret.

Cute little bakery. Their sourdough bread was perfection. The chocolate croissant was tasty, but definitely not as fresh. I’ll be back to sample the wall of pastries next time I’m on H Street.

The service here is ridiculous, not only slow but rude, barely getting orders right. On top of that, the prices are high. I’m willing to pay higher prices of service came with it.

I’ve been here several times, surprised I have not written a review. The coffee is always spectacular. The staff welcoming and warm. I come for the coffee and chocolate croissants but can easily be lured into eating other things too. I have had lunch and breakfast at Batter Bowl Bakery and all items have been delicious so do not hesitate to eat a meal. 8th Street Sandwich is my favorite: chickpeas, hummus, avocado, garlic, capers, cherry tomatoes. Nice, quiet atmosphere. A good place to chill and read or catch up on some work.

My girlfriend and I just moved into the neighborhood and heard good things about BBB. We decided to head over for lunch and get some sandwiches. 1 tuna sandwich, 1 chicken salad sandwich, 2 lemonades. Total cost about $ 25 dollars — holy shit. Not only that, they take about 25 minutes to make. Remember, this is an order of 2 sandwiches. 4 pieces of bread and a spread of chicken salad and tuna salad. WHAT? Way too expensive, took way too long, and I could’ve made better tasting sandwiches at home — this is standard fare. After 20 minutes of standing around(btw — not much seating…), they sheepishly admit their kitchen is «confused» by the order and offer us a pastry. Then they came out and one of the sandwiches was wrong. Yeah, won’t be returning.

Found this place on a walking trip with my mother-in-law. We were out to find pastries for my father-in-law. The pastries were OK, but not great… I might be spoiled, coming from Columbus where Pistacia Vera reigns supreme. We got a chocolate twist, chocolate croissant, and some type of cinnamon swirl.

It is poorly set up and even more poorly run. 3 people in the front of house and 2 people in the kitchen and it took 26 minutes to get our food! That is piss poor planning which leads to piss poor results! The coffee was stale and sat to long on the burner. The«illy» coffee and expresso is good coffee but if the people that are making it don’t make it right…3 people standing up in front of 45 foot line and no one to rotate their drip coffee? We sat in the back next to the kitchen and we could see in. one person working the order even tho 2 people were back there. Finally when our order came out they don’t even know where it went and this makes me believe they don’t have a number system. This is basic restaurant 101 and easy at a place that has 8 tables!!! The people in the front don’t expedite or take food out to the table they make the kitchen staff do it and this stops them from working while the 3 woman in the front stand around. The food was ok the atmosphere is retro but don’t go here if you want to get anything fast. Oh yeah we fought fruit flys the hole time!

Bleh. I hate to write a bad review when the employees were really nice, but we went here TWICE and had TWO sub par experiences. Bad Experience #1: My bff and I were told this place was good so we stopped by before a long day of law school seeing. We both ordered the watermelon salad, NOOLIVES. After waiting for what seemed like forever(I was also checking my watch bc I had an interview) our salads came out. BOTHWITHOLIVES. I use caps bc i really don’t like olives. But didn’t have time to send it back, so picked around it. My best friend cannot hang, so she sent hers back, knowing that meant she would have to eat on the go. If this was it, I would have given it 4 stars, because they gave us a free pastry. Mistakes happen, not a big deal, and the latte was pretty good. Bad Experience #2: Breakfast the next day. Don’t get breakfast here. We decided to give it another shot(that and we were hungry and it was walking distance) so I ordered breakfast. I paid $ 14 for a cappuccino, two scrambled eggs, 1 piece of toast, burnt, 3 slices of browned apple, and an INEDIBLE slice of avocado. in-fucking-edible. Don’t offer produce that isn’t ripe. We were so fed up at this point bc before giving us their food, they had gotten our orders wrong, that we just sucked it up and ate it(minus the in-fucking-edible avo) but vowed that convenience isn’t worth it in this case. Pasties and coffee was OK, but anything else is just a no.

The chocolate croissants are absolutely divine — buttery, flaky and all around delicious. I also got the chocolate chip cookie(what diet?) for $ 1.00, and inhaled it within seconds instead of saving it as I had originally planned. The hazelnut coffee was okay, not amazing, but the dessert options were memorable enough to warrant additional visits. Overall, an under the radar bakery on H Street that will satisfy your sweet tooth cravings without pretense or hype. If you’re looking for some treats in the H Street neighborhood, this is definitely worth checking out.

Stopped here to get some gelato after eating dinner at another place on H St. This is a small place with inside seating only. Everything they had on display looked delicious. As I said, I only stopped for gelato so I can’t speak for anything else. The hazelnut gelato was so good. Rich flavor, a small consists of three good sized scoops. Worth a try! They have free WiFi. Not much people watching since only two tables in the window and 4 or 5 additional tables in the back of the store. Nice and quiet if you are looking for that. Give it a try!

I took an UBERX car ride here after finding this place on Unilocal. They didn’t have much business on the day I was there, in fact I was the only customer for the thirty minutes I was there. Their system was down, so luckily I had cash in me. I ordered the almond croissant, I thought it was delicious! They put some sort of almond paste inside the croissant and there were also slices of almonds on top. The crust was flaky and the inside was soft, I loved it and bought a few other of their bakery items home with me. I also ordered the ham, egg and cheese croissant breakfast sandwich. I thought it was good. Kind of wished the croissant was a lot bigger, so the cheese and egg wouldn’t be sliding off and by the end of the meal I was literally holding just the egg and cheese. If they could just better portion the ingredients I’d give it two thumbs up. Almost forgot to mention that the edges of the ham were burnt. I don’t like being served burnt food. Other than that, this place is good so far.

I rarely go to H street, but schlepped over to meet some friends. We all had a lot of work to get done and wanted to sit down with some coffee to get it done. There really wasn’t enough seating and the lighting was not good. The bathroom smelled strongly of chlorine. So ambiance was pretty bad. Do not go here to do work. However, the coffee was great. I would recommend this place to grab a coffee and go. I also ate the tuna sandwich and that was surprisingly good. I would like to explore more of the food on the menu. So that’s my disclaimer – don’t try to work here or you’ll get pissed that it’s not conducive to letting you be productive. But drink their coffee, eat their food, and try their new gelato. Then let me know how it is.

Great sandwiches, good pastry, fresh bread loaves for about $ 6, Illy coffee, Paromi tea, macarons for $ 1.10, pre-filled cannoli and a few French jams. Also about six little tables inside so you can linger. Batter Bowl is a fine choice for a light lunch, every sammich is about $ 7 and comes with a small salad. Breakfast served all day plus six sandwich choices, one is pure veg. A Sixth Street brought tuna with a few olives and a dollop of red pepper sauce on top plus salad, very good and the lemon viniagrette on the fresh greens was perfect. Unfortunately they didn’t offer a choice of bread and I was too slow to ask. Also gave in to temptation and devoured a flaky almond croissant, yum if kinda small, $ 2.30. Ya just can’t pre-fill cannoli so no points there. Next time I’m getting the breakfast pizza even tho it takes 15 minutes.

Nice Café and Sandwich place. We tried this one for lunch. They have a hummus/guacamole/chickpeas/cherry tomatoes veggie sandwich which they serve with some greens and a lime dressing. Of course, you don’t walk to a bakery which has a tempting array of pastries and walk out with only a sandwich — so I got an apple turnover for good measure. Sandwich for $ 6.25 was not bad and the greens were fresh. However, felt a little bit let down by the bread as I thought the bread would be fancier and/or exotic(after all it’s a bakery!). The menu did not offer bread choices, but in retrospect, we should have asked. Something to remember for the next time. Apple turnover was ok — nothing unique or signatureish about it. Glanced over the counter and saw some exotic tea offerings but did not try any. Don’t know what we missed.

Batter Bowl Bakery is a cute bakery/patisserie on the western end of H Street Corridor. Inside the long, narrow store you will find lots of tables(really just for seating 2 – 3 people), good coffee, and so many freshly baked goodies! Macarons, croissants, baguettes, danishes, cakes and breads… and everything looks delish. I met a friend here and ordered a decaf caramel latte and a chocolate croissant. True, the chocolate croissants here are smaller than ones you’d get elsewhere(say, Starbucks or Firehook), but they are soooo fresh — you can taste it in each and every buttery morsel. Crispy flakes on the outside, soft and warm on the inside. Just heavenly. The drinks — eh. On their«specials» board they had a chai latte listed as their first drink. I ordered it and they were out.(This was 8:30 am, so I don’t know if they ran out in the first 30 minutes they opened — probably not — or if they just were simply out of it from the day before and neglected to update their board) I was bummed, but ordered a caramel latte as a consolation. The latte was decent — coffee is Illy so pretty good quality. It was, however, much more syrupy-sweet than I had expected, so that was a bit of a turn off. Total for both items + tax was $ 7.20. Ehhhhh. The croissant was good, yes, and the breads all look amazing, but I don’t know if I’d trek over this way again for those prices. However, it is a very good option if you happen to be in the neighborhood with a hankering for a high quality pastry. PS — for all you with babes-in-tow, there IS a changing table in the bathroom(yay!), but beware that it is SUPER high — almost too high for me to navigate a diaper-change effectively.

Been sitting here for the good part of 3 hours, and have felt right at home in this little bakery. It’s been a nice change actually from my usual haunt, Tryst. Although there isn’t much people watching to be done here, there also is a lot less distracting noise. Definitely a plus when you’re trying to get more work done than work avoiding. The star minus comes from two incidentals here. First, the clerk comes across as a little cold if you’re only interacting with him for a few minutes; which is actually a terrible thing for a bakery, when 90%+ of it’s clientele will not be hanging out long enough to break the ice. It took me two rounds of lattes and pastries and a few smiles to get that guy to warm up to me. I’m glad to say that he actually is a pretty nice guy, but he should probably work on his first impression. Second, why only Illy coffee? They put so much love and energy into the pastries, they should have a more fitting coffee. Illy is just too boring. My vanilla and coffee macaroons, and apricot croissant were way too good for such a blah cup of coffee. Overall, I really like this place! Maybe I’ll grab my latte from Sidamo before parking it here for a few hours, but that’s alright because the pastries and atmosphere do a good job of making up for it.

One bite of their chocolate croissants and you will be transported to Europe. Two bites of their apple turnovers and you’ll swear you were in Paris. Three bites of their chocolate chip cookies and well, you have a cholesterol problem!(ba dum bump!) This recently opened H St. coffee shop/bakery is adorable. Clean lines, lovely displays filled with bagels, macarons, cookies, croissants and turnovers, this place will definitely please the taste buds. They carry illy coffee and a wide variety of teas, so you can order a pastry, grab some coffee and either park yourself at one of their tables, or be on your merry way.(see pics) Also, I believe in the next week or two they will be serving menu items(brunch, etc.).(see menu pic) Chocolate croissant — flaky and buttery, just as any good croissant should be. There’s just a hint of semi-sweet chocolate swirled throughout which I found to be heavenly. Note: if you’re a Panera frequenter who loves chocolate in every bite, these aren’t going to be your thing.(pic) Apple turnover — again, wonderful! A little on the greasy side, but the apple cinnamon filling was great. It’s more of an applesauce filling, not cut up apples(my preference), so it’s hard to tell if they’re cheating with premade applesauce, or if they’re making it by hand each day. Still, it was tasty. Chocolate Chip Cookie — Also tasty. It helped that they were nice and warm. I only wish I had a glass of milk to accompany it! A few(very) minor issues: –The milk/sugar station should not be parked right next to the front door. It makes exiting/entering while folks are preparing their drinks a bit awkward. I’d place it to the side of the coffee bar with a fresh vase of flowers, but hey, that’s an aside. –Pastry boxes, please! The white paper bags definitely lent to the mangling of a croissant or two while I was transporting these to meet up with friends. Again, such a minor thing. –I’d love to see more pastries that can be dunked in coffee. Biscotti would be wonderful! This is a welcomed addition to the«grown-up» end of H St.
