I always come to eat and drink at The Chequers when I’m visiting my family; food is always perfect and the drinks, well… you can’ mess up a good beer. Staff is consistently extremely welcoming and accommodating to myself and my family, which makes coming to The Chequers a must-do. This past trip in was especially memorable as the manager dealt with my questions about the rib eye sauce as well as graciously parting with a Cotswold Brewery pint glass. So, wether you’re visiting from somewhere in England or from across the pond like myself, take the time to go eat and drink at The Chequers, you will not be disappointed.

Great pub with really nice polite staff, always a pleasant relaxed atmosphere especially in winter time in front of their fantastic fireplace. Beer is kept really well and never had a bad pint there. Myself and a couple of mates used the pub quite a lot because it fitted our criteria of a great country pub serving good ale, HOWEVER then came the bombshell one evening when we visited and found that our usual pint of Lovibonds Henley Gold had reached the staggering price of £4 which i am afraid was a bridge to far for us to cross, never been there since which is a real shame, come people you will say why didnt you complain to us but my answer would be, you know that is over the top for a pint of beer, maybe you just want restaurant clients i dont know, but if you want regular drinkers then please bring down your prices a bit

Dear all, I would like to respond for the last time to Mr. I am including one of many emails we sent him and his partner in regards to his bad experience at The Chequers, alas we still have never had a reply from him. «I have tried to contact you previously but still with no success. We have taken your complaint very seriously, and have investigated the matter fully. As some of the issues you have raised are totally unforgivable and have not been tolerated, to the extent that the two young girls working that night are no longer employees. I would really like to talk to you personally about the complaints and issues you had on the 20th October 2010 and to offer my apologies about your terrible experience. I would like to invite you back to The Chequers to hopefully change your opinion, and to show you that the service you received on your last visit does not reflect my restaurant. Look forward to hearing from you soon. Sincerely yours, Steven Sanderson Chef/Patron 1865407771» As any one who runs a business knows; staff are the hardest part of a business and give every employer thousands upon thousands of headaches. My business is no different. The two girls who served the couple on that particular evening were dismissed the next day for stealing. A bad call on my behalf to employ them, but my mistake was quickly corrected. I have set very high standards for my staff for the past five years and will continue to do so for the future. We please nearly all of our customers but as anybody in the service industry knows, it is impossible to please everyone. The chequers has continued to grow year on year since I have been here, and our restaurant is now better than ever and is highly critically acclaimed within the gastro pub industry. Anybody who has been here more recently would agree.

Visited the pub last Saturday and couldn’t disagree more with reviewer«Pex». Looks like whatever happened then has been rectified and couldn’t fault the staff and the food. We were very welcomed by the barman when we arrived, very courtious, offered to take our drinks to the seating area(which was more than what we would expect). Lovely to sit by the log fire, looking at the menu. Were taken to our booth. Both my husband and I had a main & a dessert. Mine was the fish pie which was excellent(whole fillet of salmon and cod inside) with samphire. My husband had the rib-eye steak which was cooked as requested. Our desserts were identifical sticky toffee pudding which vanilla ice cream. We hadn’t been to the Chequers for a long long time so it was lovely to see that it was now a great gastropub which had retained its charm. Out of all the gastropub visited lately, it is one we will come back to sooner rather than later.

After the last review could not disagree more. Very welcoming staff and helpful throughout. Interesting menu with 6 choices per course. Four of us had starters and main courses. All really well cooked(fish and chips and steak) fish batter crispy and steak done as requested. Waiting time between courses — we didn’t notice so must have been about right and there was no hassle to leave even though we were the last left. Prices about average for this area — certainly not particularly expensive. An all round good experience and would certainly recommend.

Traditional looking thatched village pub recently done up with new smart contemporary interior. Had excellent lunch there recently — haven’t tried dinner yet but a friend went a couple of weeks ago and was very impressed, apart being refused more drinks after 11.00pm. Range of good real ales — quite nice locals pub as well as restaurant. Has a nice garden for summer dining. Also went to recent quiz night(I think they’re held monthly) which was well attended and good fun(came second!)
