Never seen such rude waiter anywhere else in the world. i stepped in the almost empty restaurant, the waiter pointed a table directly facing the entrance. I asked if I can sit inside cause I’ve seen plenty of single tables inside. The waiter’s answer was a straight no, may be «hell no» if I can describe the way he said no in chinese. BTW, this place is dirty too. I am glad the waiter said no so I can get out of here.

After our hiatus from this restaurant, we decided to give it another try. The two pork dishes were very fatty(see photos) and disappointing. I did not sample the wonton noodles though they looked okay. There are definitely better choices in the area.

After an exhausting day of sight seeing, we were hungry and in Chinatown. Based on the menu and special, my colleagues and I decided to dine — would I return? Probably not. WHY? We ordered the duck special(kao ya) with appetizers and several entrees. The roast Peking duck served was shredded vice sliced; the remaining entrees were heavy in sauce not allowing the taste of the food to come out. The restaurant consists of three floors — when we first entered, we were told to keep walking up until we ended up on the third floor. As we were walking up the stairs, I kept thinking… hmmm, how far up does this go up? Fortunately, we stopped at the top. The plates of cuisine served was filling, but the quality of the cuisine being served left much to be desired. There are other Chinese restaurants in Chinatown — unfortunately, Hung is one that I will not be returning again.

Hung Tao has had a makeover and deserves a quick update. It used to be a hole in the wall diner but has had a modern facelift with a slight uplift in prices. The menu also looks revamped but I was relieved to see my go to cheap single plates of noodles and rice dishes still available albeit a little more expensive than previously. On my latest visit, I did spy out a new dish — Singapore laksa. I should have known better — I’ve never had a decent laksa at a Chinese restaurant. It was average — the main problem was the lack of depth in the soup. Never mind — I’ll return to my go to dishes next time

I recently came back to Hung Tao after it had been closed for renovation and it has taken on the style of a old style Hong Kong noodle house — a little kitsch but not tacky, now with an open kitchen right at the front of the restaurant so you can see food being prepared right from the street — all very clean and tidy. There are photos lining one wall of old Hong Kong and 60s posters on another but everything is clean and simple — a well needed updating. There’s a new menu but it still has all my old favourites on it with a few extra new dishes which I plan to try on later visits. We ordered shrimp soup dumplings(shui gau), a Singapore laksa and the crispy pork and roast duck on rice with a side of gai lan vegetables in ginger sauce. They now serve a small but welcome selection of dim sum so we also ordered some prawn and pork dumplings(sui mai) and prawn & Chinese chive dumplings — both excellent, succulent and very tasty, as were the soup dumplings, which I loved and had to order another portion of. The laksa was as good as any I have had in London if not better as the soup was sufficiently spicy hot. The roast duck and crispy pork was just how I remember them to be — nice to see standards have not slipped. All in all, food has maintained its standard with a vastly improved décor. I think I will plan my next trip to Hung Tao right now!!!

this is definitely a solid chinese restaurant for the on-the-regular dining experience. in other words, it’s not michelin star crazy fancy with european lighting and silver flatware and pleasant service. it’s a simple menu at reasonable prices and not-mean service. we had congee(someone wasn’t feeling well at home and needed comfort food), egg fried rice(not as much egg as the former leong’s legend had), stir fry beef(which was really good! the first tender beef we’ve had in a long time) and morning glory(…basic morning glory). the take out option is quick, too. 5 – 10 minutes and you’ve got a meal.

Living nearby, I have been coming to this little place on and off for a few years now and I have to say, since it had a bit of a makeover(not much of a makeover but a bit of a sprucing up), it really is worth dropping in for a quick lunch or snack. I heard it had been taking over earlier this year and it seems it’s for the best the staff are friendly and efficient and the food is good value for money, substantial portions, tasty and piping hot. I had a big bowl of prawn and pork soup dumplings which were top notch succulent and flavoursome with proper soup broth(none of that MSG soup powder that you get in so many other places). I also had a plate of roast duck and barbequed pork on rice which was excellent the duck was tender and nicely browned and the sauce was not too sweet, unlike some other places where it’s almost like dessert syrup. The pork was good too, tender and not dripping with artificial colour. Their homemade chilli oil(which you need to ask) for is properly spicy hot, which I love! On of my biggest bug bears is overcooked veg and here it was crisp and juicy so I was happy to take one of my 5 a day here! All in all, a perfect place to drop in for a casual meal.

So we’re in London and yeah, the last place I’m thinking about eating is at a Chinese restaurant, but I notice the man in the window and watch him chopping duck. It looks so good that I gotta try it. We get seated and all I can think of is I gotta order some thing with duck, so I settle on the Crispy Noodle with duck. Luckily, we didn’t have to wait too long. It’s a pretty good portion and smells great. I take one bite of my noodles and holy crap, this is the best Chinese food I’ve ever had! The sauce on the noodles was so tasty and the duck… let me just tell you… it was boneless — and holy crap — the pieces were so generous, so meaty! The exact opposite of what you’d find here in Hawaii where you’re usually just sucking on bone. The meat was tasty and moist and oh my god, I could go on and on… damn I’m drooling just thinking about it. Lucky for me, this restaurant was just around the corner from our hotel and since they’re open until 11pm, I could just walk on down and as soon as I walked in, the waitress knew my order! Ordering it take away tasted just as delicious. That Crispy Noodle with Duck is the number one thing I miss about London. I hope that I can find something similar to that here in Hawaii.

Food was actually pretty good. We had pork and preserved egg congee, a ma pao tofu dish, and a bowl of wonton soup. Unfortunately, it was a bit of an irritable dining experience for us. We got there around 9:30PM and saw the restaurant opens til 11:30 or so. We stepped in and was greeted by a somewhat annoyed looking waitress who told us eating in will cost us «extra 10%» and points to the menu that actually said«suggested service fee 10%». I don’t know… isn’t «suggested» mean«optional»? At any rate, we weren’t going to bring food to our cramped little hotel room(and when I say small, I really mean small), and we typically tip anyway, so we said we will dine in. To which she repeated to say«it will cost you extra». Moments after we sat down, four people came in, then moments later, two more parties of two came in. Same waitress, greeted them warmly, had them sat down no problem(did not repeat or even mention the extra cost to dine in). So I ponder to myself… do my husband and I look like we don’t tip or someting?

Spicy king prawn. Garlic drenched veggies. Delicious spicy soups. Mmmmm. This place is quick, easy, clean, and always hits the spot. Service is great here too, the staff is always efficient and super friendly. And there’s no way you can beat these prices as nothing is really over a tenner on the menu. I love me some good, cheap and tasty Chinese, and you can’t go wrong here. Hung Tao is my place!

Went here on a rainy day with some folks I met at my hostel. We had been sightseeing all day in the pouring rain, so something hot was in order. 3 of us got the wonton soup and one guy got a chicken dish. The portions are pretty small, but the food was pretty good. The service wasn’t the greatest as it was very busy and there was only pretty much one girl working the whole place. It’s not the cheapest Chinese place to eat, but it gets the job done on a cold and rainy London day, read: everyday.

I love congee or juk as it’s like ‘a hug in a bowl’ — it really it is the ultimate comfort food. That’s why the Chinese use it to feed toddlers and the sick. Needless to say, it’s also a fantastic hangover cure. This Southern Chinese dish truly is the breakfast of kings and whenever I’m in the Far East, I always track down a stall or caff for juk. But back home, I’ve never been impressed by juk when eating out in London so more often than not, I make my own. Fast-forward to a dismal wet Saturday in November in Bayswater. My original plan was to try some Cantonese BBQ at Gold Mine but as there was a massive queue, I just ended up buying some take-away siu yuk. That still left the dilemma on where to go for lunch. Now you’re never lacking in choice on Queensway with so many foodie fave destinations such as Royal China, Mandarin Kitchen, Four Seasons and Kiasu. But I wanted to try somewhere a bit different which is I ended up at Hung Tao. Being such a grim day, I needed some comfort food so it was a toss-up between soup noodles and juk. The latter won out and I ordered my favourite of fish slice congee(yu pian juk). And I was so glad I did as this was truly a big hug in a bowl ! Even after making allowances for my mood, my juk was unbelievably soothing and full of flavour. I reckon they threw in a ladle or two of the masterstock they use for soup noodles as well as the masses of julienned ginger to make it so moreish. A minor complaint is that they could’ve used better quality fish but looking back this is me being a bit la-di-da as I use cod fillet in my home made juk. Besides I shouldn’t be nitpicking given the generous amount of fish in my bowl of juk that cost just £5.50. Hung Tao is a bit of a hole in the wall and its décor and ambience reminded me of the cha chaan tengs of Hong Kong — in my book, that’s a good thing. Service was pretty efficient and without the surliness that you sometimes get in Chinatown.

felt like having some congee but ended up having a lot more! nice, flavourful congee, cantonese style. had the house special which was basically a mixture of meat and other parts. the congee was of good consistency but ingredients were slightly overcooked. the beef brisket noodle soup was nice but alas it did not come with beef tendon. the noodles were al dente and soup tasty. wanton soup was freshly made with prawn, chives and meat. the beef hor fun with black bean sauce, which my friend had, also looked yum. according to my friends, the fried rice with diced chicken and salted fish is delectable. it’s a small setting but a comfortable environment. friendly and efficient service. they even gave a 1 pound discount as we did not have small change! apparently, kiasu, hung tao and kam tong along the same street are all owned by the same owner. not too long ago, due to a rental dispute, all three shops were temporarily shut. the company was so good that we chatted till closing time which was 11pm. at an average price of 5 pounds a dish, i would say they are cheap and good!

Hung Tao Noodle Restaurant is an excellent place to buy a fast food-type Chinese meal. Think Wok in a Box, as opposed to a massive and immaculate restaurant. Fill up a box with some cheap Chinese grub and then get ouf of there, that is my personal recommendation and one of the best ways to enjoy your food. The interior wasn’t particularly well maintained when me and my girlfriend were there, maybe with that little bit of negligence you come to asscociate with a kebab shop or fast food joint. It wasn’t bad at all, don’t get me wrong, but I wouldn’t like to sit down and eat my meal there for a long time! The waiting time is practically non existant and the food scrumptious and relatively cheap. Get on it.
